As a DIE HARD MSU fan, I'd like nothing more than to give this DVD a 5 Star rating. Unfortunately, I simply cannot do that. First off, the title of the DVD itself is misleading. It is called THE LEGENDS OF MICHIGAN STATE, which would tend to imply that it covers legendary players over the entire history of MSU football. This is simply not the case.
What it is is a compilation of about 11 players from the past 10yrs who played for the Green & White. It is an NFL scouting report on each player. This focus on what the NFL thinks of (or may think of?) each player gets rather tedious as it just shows a highlight reel of the player with a voiceover narration of the player's strengths & weaknesses.
Even with that said, the selection of players is questionable. Many of the players on the DVD have had marginal success in the NFL, and some of them have had less than that. So....a scouting report on a player who didn't make the cut in the NFL is ultimately a moot point. Charles Rogers is one of the players covered, but he was a complete bust. As much as I like Drew Stanton, his NFL career has not panned out, either.
The one player on the DVD who could be registered as an all-time legend of MSU football would be Plaxico Burress. He had by far the biggest impact in the NFL of all the players portrayed on the DVD (that is to say, until he accidentally shot himself in the leg). There are other players who played w/him who are mysteriously absent from the DVD; Julian Peterson & Renaldo Hill, to name a few. Both have had outstanding NFL careers.
What I was hoping for was a DVD that covered top players over the entire history of Michigan State. I wanted to see stories (and not just scouting reports) on players like Lorenzo White, Herb Adderly, Bubba Smith, Billy Joe Dupre, Mark Ingram, Andre Rison, Derrick Mason, etc. I thought it would be an MSU football counterpart to The Greatest Stories of Michigan State Basketball. Unfortunately, that was simply not to be.To add insult to injury, 2 of the players on this DVD are kickers (Dave Rayner & Brandon Fields). I mean, I wish those two players all the best, but who wants to see highlight reels of place-kickers & punters? How lame is THAT?
