WCW Uncensored 2000 (2000) Review

WCW Uncensored 2000 (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, let's be brief on this one. Uncensored is pretty good for a WCW PPV. But the attendance, even in a brand-new Florida arena, looks miserable. The chairs clearly are not filled, which is obvious all through the event. Still, Uncensored managed to be the typical plethora of unpredictable mayhem it's cracked up to be. Here are the matches.
CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE: THE ARTIST WITH PAISLEY(C) VS. PSYCHOSIS
Okay action, for the first match of the night, but the ending will make you roll your eyes so far up you'll probably go blind, so I would skip it if I were you. 5/10.
X.S. VS. SCREAMIN' DEMONS
Come on, now. This match belonged on Nitro, and even there it wouldn't have been good. Mercifully short, and we see Stacy Kiebler. So I can live with it. I think. 4/10.
BAM BAM BIGELOW VS. THE WALL
Wow! An actual storyline to a match! A bad one, but still a storyline. The Wall, Bigelow's protege, is destroying men left and right, such as David Flair and Crobar. He does the same to Bigelow tonight. And oh yeah, he also throws Crobar off the scaffolding 15 feet down through the stage, which was the best bump of the night..and the month...and probably the year so far. 6/10.
HARDCORE TITLE: 3 COUNT(CHAMPS) VS. BRIAN KNOBS
How do you make three men hardcore champion at once? Call it incompetent booking. Fortunately, this match was not so, as Knobs put the title back on his waist where it belonged. Actually some pretty decent hardcore spots, if you knew where to look. 5/10.
BOOKER AND KIDMAN WITH TORRIE WILSON VS. THE NEW HARLEM HEAT
Nice match, especially the ending. The New Harlem Heat is just an asinine concept, and a silly team as well. Big T, Stevie Ray's new partner, has definitely not been to Weight Watcher's. The Duchess of York could give him some advice. At least Big Fat Overweight T pulls his considerable load with the rest of the wrestlers. 5/10.
FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE: FIT FINLAY VS. VAMPIRO
I didn't know WCW was allowed to have matches this good. But this one raged through the ring, into the back--the bathrooms, the balcony, the commons area...the arena was a war zone. Not exactly a show-stealer, but it did better than expected. Vampiro deserved a push. 7/10.
TAG TEAM TITLES: THE MAMALUKES WITH DISCO INFERNO(C) VS. HARRIS BROS.
This was actually pretty good too. As good as WCW gets in tag team matches. You knew the match would end the way it did, but in between (the beginning and the middle) it kept you guessing. 7/10.
TEXAS BULLROPE MATCH: DUSTIN RHODES VS. TERRY FUNK
Unique match as well for WCW, and it worked, too. Not only was it funny, with Funk hitting Rhodes with a chicken from the grocery store and bringing out a guy in a chicken suit, but the bumps and cowbell shots were nice as well. Fittingly, Dustin proves the superiority of his family and end the legendary Rhodes-Funk family rivalry. 7/10.
LUMBERJACK CAST MATCH: THE TOTAL PACKAGE WITH ELIZABETH VS. STING
Both men bring out lumberjacks. It's actually a very good match, but the other wrestlers distract from the grace going on in the ring. Ending was a surprise. 7/10.
WORLD TITLE: SID VICIOUS(C) VS. JEFF JARRETT WITH nWo GIRLS
They can NOT be serious. A good match between these two could have brought the PPV up to its real standards, but it seems they weren't smart enough to pull it off. Scott Steiner comes back, and Hulk Hogan saves Vicious' ass big time. At least they didn't make this one main-event, or I seriously would have broken down in tears. 4/10.
APPLE PIE INDIAN STRAP MATCH: HULK HOGAN VS. RIC FLAIR
As they say, the last Hogan-Flair match--and it wasn't bad, either. Both men got busted open to some degree, and it was a little more physical than I'd suspected. Hogan is getting too old to wrestle; so is Flair. At least one of them picks up a decisive victory. (That would of course be Hogan.) Saves the event. 8/10.

Fitness Made Simple: Six Pack Abs with John Basedow Review

Fitness Made Simple: Six Pack Abs with John Basedow
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm never going to look quite like John Basedow, but by alternating the three sets of exercises (I do one set each day), which take about ten minutes or so at the most to do, for about two months now, I've seen a lot of improvement and won't be embarrassed on the beach or at the pool this summer (well, except for my complete lack of a tan).
For overall health, I think you need to combine this with a healthy, sensible diet and some other exercise (all I do are pushups and long daily walks). Six pack abs won't do anything for your arms or shoulders or anything other than your abs, but it does tone muscles that are pretty hard to build up otherwise.
Basedow demonstrates everything very well, and is a pleasant enough exercise partner.

I stumbled upon this video (when it was first shown on TV) while teaching my first education course at a local community college. It is truly reflective of the challenges facing many public school teachers today. This is a MUST SEE for those people thinking about becoming teachers. I'm glad to be able to have my own copy instead of relying on internet snippets.

Running-The BK Method Review

Running-The BK Method

Although presented well, there is too much information on this DVD series for the average person. This is more for a coach or someone maybe wanting to teach. I did learn a lot, but it was mostly over my head. My goal was to learn a bit of running technique and this was way more than I needed and kind of fried me by the end. Your needs may vary, so decide accordingly.

FIVE HOURS OF CONTENT-2 DISK SET!An advanced running technique is presented based on the application of knowledge gained from anatomy and biomechanics. You will get tremendous insight into how different muscles work together as well as alone during running. Extensive information is given on the structure and function of the most important muscles. Topics include start and acceleration, high-speed and efficient running. This takes into account differences in backgrounds and interests of runners. Information on technique is provided on two levels. Level 1 assumes that the reader has no prior knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics. Complicated principles are explained clearly without in-depth discussion of human anatomy. Level 2 assumes a basic knowledge of anatomy and some insight into biomechanical principles in as far as they are relevant to running.

Rick Faye's Wooden Dummy - JKD Sets Review

Rick Faye's Wooden Dummy - JKD Sets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this to be an excellent training reference. The information is presented in a straightforward and consistent manner. The video production quality is no-frills, with the focus on the content. There is a DVD chapter for the start of each set for easy access. Each of the ten sets is presented on its own, followed by its applications and interpretations to put it in perspective. Everything is demonstrated and presented by Sifu Rick, whose expertise is highly evident and inspirational. The video format allowed me to control the pace of instruction and analyze details, often by watching a segment over and over until I could see some aspect the way I needed to. This is not always easy to do in a live class environment. It's also great when you're just trying to remember how the third move in the first half of set #4 goes.
After learning the first set I immediately experienced some of the benefits of training on the dummy. Specifically, I saw a benefit in my footwork (split triangle), which might seem surprising (it was to me), but as one learns in the training, effective body movement and positioning are incredibly important foundations. Of course, there's a lot more than just footwork in these JKD dummy sets. The dummy training has definitely improved my trapping game in a number of ways, and it's great to have a wide range of useful and interesting drills I can practice when a partner is not available.

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006) Review

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been waiting for a documentary about Hosoi. He came after me as a skater but I think that this documentary shows the bridge from where Alva [the greatest of all time ever]and Jay Adams [the most rad skater]left off and the extention of air continued. It shows how versitile Hosoi was in adapting to the emerging street skating that left many vert skaters behind. It also shows how Tony Hawk (though supportive of Hosoi in the documentary) was really a pale version of Hosoi. It was as if Hosoi was the Jay Adams of his day and Tony Hawk was the Stacy Peralta. Sure Peralta and Hawk were able to capitalize on skating and convert it to monetary fame, but the two who really ripped in their time were Adams and Hosoi. It is a must see for skaters and those unfamiliar with the subject. It is well made and suitable for everyone. I liked it better that the Gater Rogowski documentary. There is a duality to it that enables the viewer to see the rise of this prodigious skater and his sincerity in wanting to contribute after he was released from the pen.

Tyrone Power Collection (Blood and Sand / Son of Fury / The Black Rose / Prince of Foxes / The Captain from Castile) (1948) Review

Tyrone Power Collection (Blood and Sand / Son of Fury / The Black Rose / Prince of Foxes / The Captain from Castile) (1948)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While calling this a 'Swashbuckler' collection is misleading (these aren't the swordfighting, acrobatic adventures synonymous with Fairbanks, Flynn, Lancaster, or even Power, in "The Mark of Zorro"), these are vastly entertaining films, and Tyrone Power is always a joy of watch!
The oldest of the films, "Blood and Sand", is the strangest entry of the collection; while the other films are historical epics, this technicolor morality tale, told in a bullfight saga, was released in pre-WWII 1941. A remake of Rudolph Valentino's 1922 silent classic, Power is the fearless matador loved by sweet Linda Darnell, but corrupted by sophisticated vixen Rita Hayworth (being groomed for stardom at the time). The fun of this film isn't so much the drama, however, as the beauty of Power and Hayworth, and a fabulous supporting cast, including Anthony Quinn, Laird Cregar, and John Carradine; watch for future 'Superman' George Reeves in a small role!
"Son of Fury" (1942) is best-known as the film that helped launch Gene Tierney's career, and the sad swansong of Frances Farmer's attempted comeback, but it is closer in spirit to "Anthony Adverse" than swashbuckler. Supposedly illegitimate Power is abused by sadistic uncle George Sanders, and flees to the South Seas to gain the wealth to contest his status, falling for island girl Tierney. Don't miss the climactic fistfight between Power and Sanders; it's nearly as spectacular as the Wayne/Scott brawl in "The Spoilers"!
The end of WWII brought a new 'consciousness' to historical epics, and Power's films would be among the best, marred only by some poorly-cast leading ladies. "Captain from Castile" (1947) offered the one exception, sultry Jean Peters; while the concept was similar to "Son of Fury" (hero goes overseas...Mexico, this time...seeking fortune and fame to clear name), the film benefits from breathtaking Technicolor Mexican locations (watch for the active volcanoes!), a first-rate cast, including Cesar Romero (fabulous as Cortez), and Alfred Newman's unforgettable score. "Prince of Foxes" (1949), first of two Power teamings with Orson Welles, is one of Hollywood's first 'intellectual' epics; In 16th certury Italy, a pretender (Power), gains the confidence of legendary Cesare Borgia (Welles), who uses Power's wiles to win cities in his plan to conquer and unite Italy. Unfortunately, conscience (in the form of miscast Wanda Hendrix), would get in the way! "The Black Rose" (1950), set in 13th century Britain, completes the collection; again, Power goes to foreign lands (this time, China) to win a fortune, and save his Saxon family's estate and honor, accompanied by loyal Jack Hawkins (who nearly steals the film). He enters the service of exotic General Bayan (Welles), and wins the heart of captive Cecile Aubry (easily the worst of Power's leading ladies), bringing China's wonders back to the West. Produced in England, on a smaller budget, the film lacks the 'sweep' of the other titles, and Power (at 36) is getting a bit old to be playing youths, but it is still entertaining!
For Tyrone Power's many fans (including me), finally seeing these titles on DVD is a cause to celebrate, and one hopes that more of his film work will soon be available!

TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams, Volume One (Bathing Beauty / Easy to Wed / On an Island with You / Neptune's Daughter / Dangerous When Wet) (1946)
Average Reviews:

Finally we get to see Esther Williams flicks in radiant colors and updated sound! Not that the DVD transfers are perfect, Criterion-league: there are specks and scratches from time to time, and blacks tend to bleed, particularly in the early ones (e.g. Bathing Beauty). But what a pleasure it is to have this joyful entertainement back, put together with care and intelligence. There's bonus material galore, though not all of it dealing with the star.
Included in the Bathing Beauty disc is a substantial interview Ms. Williams did with Robert Osborne for Turner Classic Movies. Ms. Williams comes across as somebody who has always been level headed, with a realistic view of life, aware of alternatives and skeptical of show-biz, always marveled at her good fortune (wondering when it would end), with the self-assurance gained from awareness of her personal worth. Nothing delusional there: underneath the Hollywood glamour, throughout her career and beyond, she has retained the mindset and integrity of a committed, champion athlete, i.e., it's the hard work, constancy and achievement that count, not the glitz or the noise (she was slated to participate in the 1940 Olympics had WWII not interfered). All these personal qualities come across in her films, and probably made her a star, unique in her genre. Before, during and after, there was no other. Though she was a fine craftsman and learned her trade well as an actress, she really only played one character, Esther Williams. Audiences flocked to "Esther Williams movies," with all fantasy such would entail (of course, production values count). It is difficult not to feel that she'd be a great friend to have. During the interview Robert Osborne can barely contain his delight.
Suspend disbelief, just enjoy. I hope we don't have to wait as long for Volume 2, which would include Million Dollar Mermaid and Easy to Love.
For fans, I would also recommend reading her down-to-earth autobiography.

USA Football presents 3-5-3 Stack Defense Review

USA Football presents 3-5-3 Stack Defense
Average Reviews:

I regularly use a 3-3 Cover I Defense as an alternate way to face a one back double twins set on the high school level. I wanted to get a quick look at 3-5 variant to see how similar my system is to the standard 3-5, which is a defense that we will face at least twice this year.
The presenter makes no misrepresentation and clearly states that this is s basic introduction to the defense. If you coach on the high school level you will find this DVD rather limited for your needs.
If you are a Little Loop coach this DVD may offer you another way to defend a very popular offense and it could give you a real edge if the 4-2 Cover I or 4-3 Cover 0 is the main way to defend no TE sets in your league.

Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection, Vol. 1-3 (1946) Review

Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection, Vol. 1-3 (1946)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just to clarify, so that anyone considering this three-volume collection will have ALL of the relevant info in making their purchase decision: Reviewer K. Echols "kyle" is correct in stating that the included cartoons are unedited (...well, except for a few minor points and some aspect ratio issues); but what he fails to mention (and is perhaps just unaware of) is that the Tom and Jerry Hanna Barbera Spotlight Collection IS in fact censored in the sense that two of the T&J HB cartoons, "Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat," are omitted from the collection altogether. Warner Brothers issued a statement about why they chose to omit those two cartoons; that statement is posted in the reviews for Volume 3 if you'd like to read it.
Also, WB did initially ship Volumes 1 and 2 with some edited cartoons--not EVERY controversial cartoon on those two volumes was in edited version, but SOME of them. (Using the edited versions was however a mistake, not WB's intention, in those first two volumes.) To correct the problem, WB established an 800 # and gave away free replacement discs. I don't know whether the versions of those two volumes that you'd get if you bought today would have the edited or the corrected discs (although I would like to assume the latter, if WB is being responsible).
It's entirely possible that those who are less intimately acquainted with the original versions of these T&J cartoons wouldn't even be aware of the edits in Volumes 1 and 2--and many people may not be bothered by the edits anyway, which is fine. But if you think you got the edited versions and that's NOT what you want, you might see if WB is still running the free replacement program; contact details are in the "Comments" that go along with my review of Volume 3. Also, you need to be aware that the replacement program is ONLY for Volumes 1 and 2--there is NO replacement program from WB to give you the "Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat" cartoons that were omitted from Volume 3--and there never will be, if WB stays true to what they've stated. (If you're not sure whether you're looking at edited versions or not and would like to know, just Google "Tom Jerry Spotlight Collection"--you won't have any problem finding articles that detail all of the edits.)
I'm not telling anyone to avoid buying these sets. They're great for what they do have in them. But any review that represents this three-volume collection as "uncensored" and "untouched" simply isn't accurate; and I'd prefer that folks have access to ALL of the facts when they're choosing whether or not to lay out their money.

The Official World Series Film Collection Review

The Official World Series Film Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recently ordered and received "The Official World Series Film Collection," from Amazon.com for $90 and I must say WOW!
I am a baseball lifer and enjoy traveling down to watch the Pirates play and when I saw this product advertised on MLB Network I thought there was no way this was affordable. Then I pop up here and its $90. So I figured the set got to be great pick up so I picked it up.
Let me continue to say WOW!
The presentation of this box set is a coffee table format. It is really well made and its something that my friends and family over the past few days have marveled over. The foreward has been written by Bob Costas who anyone knows loves the game. Followed in the Coffee Table box is a pictorial essay of the biggest moments in Series history dating from the first WS between Pittsburgh and Boston in 1903 to the Phillies in 2008. Woven in this "scrap book" is the DVDs. One improvement is they put the discs in pockets on top of the pages and its SO much easier to access the discs, in the past box sets released in this format have put discs in the middle of the page in tight spots where you can easily scratch the discs. Not so here.
Overall I give MLB and A&E mad props for this excellent presentation of this box set.
The contents of this box set is self explanatory you have the World Series FILM of every WS from 1943-2008. I emphasize FILM because you will get someone who will buy this THINKING they will get FULL games. These are not full games. These are 30-45 minute films highlighting each World Series from 1943-2008. I find it a treat to watch players such as Mickey Mantle, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Carlton Fisk, George Brett, Jack Morris, etc in this set.
Now the quality of the DVDs are excellent and there are no bonus features and really who cares about bonus features when you have nearly 50 hours of baseball on DVD. This set gives the baseball diehard an opportunity to relive the greatest moments on baseball's grandest stage. I rate these on par with the NFL Films Super Bowl Collection as the finest in Sports DVDs because of the great quality.
I watched the 1979 World Series Film between my Buccos and the Baltimore Orioles and watching the build-up of the Series and watching the big plays and big moments are excellent. I am really looking forward to dive into other Series films.
Bottomline: if you miss the opportunity to get this set for $90...you are missing a golden opportunity. I find this set to be priceless for the baseball fan. If you are looking for a holiday gift or a birthday gift for the baseball fan I would almost guarantee you will hit one out of the park with this

A Message from Jeff Scott, Senior Writer-- Major League Baseball Productions, someone who has worked on the World Series MLB Project for the last 20 years.

There was no shortage of storylines in the first World Series film I wrote for Major League Baseball Productions. The year was 1988 and this fellow Orel Hershiser had just completed a regular season in which he threw six consecutive scoreless games - topped off by a 10 inning masterpiece that enabled him to set a new record with 59 straight scoreless innings. He threw another eight scoreless in the LCS against the Mets to extend his mark to 67 straight innings without allowing a run. Did I mention his save in Game Four of the LCS - a shutout in Game Seven of that series and still another in Game Two of the World Series against the A's (he also went 3-3 with two doubles in that game)? Of course, what most folks remember from that '88 Series was the home run a hobbling (Hobbsing?) Kirk Gibson hit to win the opener and set the stage for a Dodger championship. Whew, I thought. This script writes itself. I soon discovered that it doesn't always work that way - in fact, there have been many years when folks have said that our official World Series Film was better than the real thing.

But regardless of the drama or lack thereof, it's always baseball -- and I have had the pleasure and honor to write the World Series film for more than 20 years. A little background is in order here. The first four decades of World Series films were created as archival programs designed to capture the highlights for posterity. The narration was staccato and to the point - much more play-by-play than storytelling. By the 1970s the film became a blend of archive and entertainment - more story intensive - and come the 1980s these films were offered to the public first on VHS and later DVD. With this latest evolution came a drastic change in production. What once took months to leisurely put together now had to be turned around in less than two weeks to accommodate the film's distributor. And that's how it's been since I first became a part of the process. That first script I wrote back in 1988 was banged out on an IBM Selectric Typewriter (with automatic back space white out.) I would soon move on to a Smith Corona Word Processer - the kind where you had to insert a new piece of paper into the roll for each page you wanted to print. It took close to 45 minutes to print out the 1991 classic which described how John Smoltz and Jack Morris traded darts in an unforgettable Game Seven. The 1993 series was the first one I wrote that included my beloved Phillies. But after enduring the traumatic Game Four and Joe Carter's blast three days later I can assure you that film is still sitting on my shelf wrapped in its original cellophane. Just because I wrote it doesn't mean I have to watch it!

There was no World Series film in 1994 - perhaps the darkest October in baseball history. I was still writing for Mel Allen on "This Week in Baseball" that year, and the only time I ever saw him cry was when he read that there would be no World Series that year. The Yankees incredible run that began in 1996 electrified New York City. And it all seemed ready to peak in 2001, for this World Series was very much a part of the healing process after 9-11 - and the Yankees were following the script to a "T." Miraculous back-to-back comebacks at Yankee Stadium had put the Yankees on the brink of the title -- all they had to do was win one more in the desert. But just when everything appeared to be in place for a true Fall Classic classic, Luis Gonzalez hit a little flair over shortstop off the best closer on the planet and the unpredictable world of baseball had thrown us all another curve.

The premiere of the 2004 World Series film in Boston was a raucous delight - the audience was screaming and cheering every moment on the big screen. This was also the year we shifted away from classic voiceover talent (Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Curt Chaplin, Len Cariou) and instead called upon actors who lived and died with their teams. Denis Leary voiced that 2004 film and he did a fantastic job. But the truth is, it was almost as much fun listening to the stream of good-natured invective he unleashed in the voiceover booth every time he messed up. Chicago native Michael Clarke Duncan manned the mike the next year, followed by St. Louis fan Billy Bob Thornton. Matt Damon was a pleasure to work with when the Sox won again in 2007. How much he loves his team became apparent halfway through the session when this award-winning actor -- who has been in some of this generation's top films -- sat back and said that this might have been the coolest thing he'd ever done. And in 2008 - when I finally got to write a World Series film that had a happy ending (at least for me), Terrence Howard brought just the right tone to the script.

Beyond all these actors and narrators, I have been blessed to work with many talented producers, editors, executive producers, field crews, audio engineers, proofreaders and myriad assistants, associates and coordinators who together form the basis of each and every film. And nothing on a professional level makes me feel better than when the show is finally recorded and mixed and they get to see their hard work brought together by a solid script and crisp narration. The World Series film is the gift we give to baseball fans every year - and I'm just happy to be the one who gets to tie the bow.
