Mike Swain's Judo (1990) Review

Mike Swain's Judo (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased this DVD and found it 25% useful. Why 25%? Well the rest of the DVD seem to have no sound (i.e. both the replaced and original order). I have notified Black Belt as well as Amazon of this problem and hopefully they will address this issue ASAP as it is frustrating and disappointing to say the least. However, from what I have previewed so far (with sound) is quite good and very useful for the budding judoka. I am crossing my fingers to preview a working version of this DVD (2nd replacement) and provide some positive feedback.

Saulo Ribeiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Revolution Series One. Six Volume DVD Instructional Series for Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts Review

Saulo Ribeiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Revolution Series One. Six Volume DVD Instructional Series for Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This six set DVD covers the major aspects of BJJ: Mount, Cross Body (ie side control), Back, Guard, Half Guard, Passing Guard. The only other piece needed for a complete sport game is takedowns, which are covered in Series Two. All instruction is with gi, with Saulo demonstrating on Chris (one of his brown belts) for around 15 techniques per video.
The techniques lean towards offense, so for example Half Guard spends more time passing and submitting than defending or sweeping. Saulo does a great job of emphasizing a consistent theme in each DVD. For example in the Cross Body DVD the first few sequences demonstrate the importance of controlling the opponents hips with your weight, as opposed to with arm positioning or grips, and he reiterates this point in every cross body technique. This theme of using your core positioning rather than limbs to maintain control comes across as one of the key tenets of Saulo's approach. Another key point is that jiu-jitsu is not as simple as learning a set of magic techniques that always work, and Saulo teaches you to recognize the moment (it sounds like "momentum" sometimes but it's "moment") in which a technique will be most effective.
Overall this series is very good. As a white belt who has trained for six months, I found the half-guard DVD particularly enlightening, both the specific passes and the general philosophy for defending and sweeping. The only complaint is that the series emphasizes advanced techniques at the expense of basics. This is most pronounced on the Guard DVD, where the basic submissions (armbar, lapel choke, kimura, triangle) aren't touched, while multiple butterfly sweeps are. Bill Lewis's online review says this is probably due to marketing concerns of avoiding material well-trodden by other series. Still, I found Saulo's series most valuable when it laid out correct body placement on basic moves and positions as opposed to exotic submissions, and having this for the full range of "BJJ 101" would have been nice.
Another minor complaint - both Saulo and Chris are wearing shiny white gis and sometimes it's hard to tell exactly where an arm or leg is positioned. Kind of an obvious oversight in what otherwise is a very well produced set.
Overall though anyone up to a blue should find this set greatly clarifies some basic points and erases many of the misconceptions you've picked up early in training. I'm guessing advanced belts will benefit from the more advanced techniques, but I'll leave that to another reviewer to confirm.

Mastering The Rubber Guard Review

Mastering The Rubber Guard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been training in BJJ for only 5 months and obviously still a white belt. One thing I noticed is how I always found myself in the half guard (about 70% of the time), constantly trying to keep my opponents leg from passing into side control. At the same time I was taught to stick in the butterfly hook in and sweep him before he is able to finagle his leg out and control me from the side. Needless to say my percentage was very low in sweeping anyone, unless they were a newbie white belt. I was extremely frustrated and never wanted to be on my back, but all of the bigger and stronger guys were able to muscle me to the floor at the beginning of rolling.
Then I came across the half guard game that Eddie teaches with the lock down. What a difference! With the Rubber Guard DVD I started practicing mechanics of Old School, Electric Chair, and Returning to Full Guard. It has been about two months since my start, and I have become proficient, but not perfect; But no one in my gym seems to know about this system, or want to learn it so I got away with moves even if they are semi sloppy. This gave me the comfort and confidence on being on my back! I think a couple guys have the Rubber Guard book, but no one has shown me or attacked with a lock down/grape vine, or any rubber guard for that fact. Maybe they are not flexible or are embarrassed to use it because it is not taught in my school.
WHAT THIS REVIEW IS ULTIMATELY ABOUT:
The other day I had to roll with the second head instructor of my school. No doubt, a black belt, given by Carlos Gracie Jr. I had never rolled with him before, but everyone told me how strong, efficient, and great he is. He let me fall into his guard and the first three minutes and as we were moving and rolling, he caught me in a arm triangle choke. I was kind of embarrassed because I saw it coming and was almost able to defend it, but it was to late. Then, I decided to let him come to me, and I pulled him into my half guard. Quickly I pulled the lock down, softly, not to alert him to what I was trying to do. Then as I went for the Old school Sweep, I noticed there was also an opportunity to go for the electric chair. I figured if there was ever a chance to submit my instructor, this would be it! I under hooked his leg and I tried to whip my leg up and across, but all of his weight was on the back leg. For a split second I thought to myself, "Damn, this guy also studied Eddie Bravo's Guard!" But no more then 3 seconds later, I felt his weight shift off the back leg, and I quickly whipped my lock down to the left and he fell right into the Electric Chair. In hopes that he would realized he was done, I didn't want to go to hard because I was afraid of hurting his hamstrings. But, I could tell on his face that the discomfort was not enough for him to tap. He tried to defend by grabbing my head, but I jolted it back and cranked it up. All I could hear was my other instructor/friend in my head say, "Never Let go!" Needless to say he tapped a couple seconds later. It was almost surreal to see a black belt on the floor ashamed that a white belt just tapped him out.
I can't wait to utilized the other 90% of the DVD's instructions. If this is what the 10 percent can do for me, then I can't wait to use the rest. Just always remember to work on flexibility, and repeat the drills over and over, until you get the mechanics engraved into your brain. If it worked for me, it can work for anyone!

Got this set for Christmas. I'm a BJJ purple belt and wanted to add more leglocks to my submission game. First two discs are takedowns directly to leglocks, while the other 4 discs are leglocks from inside guard (3), outside guard (4), across the side (5) and from the mount and back (6). Was impressed with the variety and positions from which the attacks come from. I would dock the set a half star because of the production, which is good, but still a few years old, but it's not enough to dock it a full star. Other than that, a great set that I hope to start implementing into my game soon.

Takedowns and Takedown Defense for MMA Review

Takedowns and Takedown Defense for MMA

This is a good solid DVD and and has really good techniques. I won't bother going over the techniques since the other review has a comprehensive list of them.
Pros:
1) A plethora of good techniques that are well executed, and shown from an infinite variety of angles.
2) Good menu system. Very easy to find the one technique you want to rewatch
3) Really breaks down take down defense as a set of 'three levels of defense' (footwork, underhooks, sprawl)
This was the first time I felt satisfied after watching a DVD about takedown defense. I felt Rutten's and Machida's DVDs fell a little flat in this area.
Cons:
1) Feels like a collection of techniques. It lacks the cohesiveness of the Machida DVD
2) The one bonus feature is of A. Silva sparring. That is great and all, but I would have liked to see an interview akin to the Machida DVD. Would have been great to learn more about the man behind the techniques.
All in all I am satisfied with this purchase.

In Takedowns and Takedown Defense for MMA, Anderson breaks down and examines one of the most important aspects of the sport- dictating where the fight takes place. In addition to demonstrating how to utilize strikes to stealthily set up single leg takedowns, double leg takedowns, and an assortment of throws, he also covers how to set up takedowns by evading your opponent's strikes. He unleashes his entire arsenal of throws from the clinch, detailing everything from basic pummeling to elaborate throws. Next, he moves onto defense, covering not only his most effective methods for evading and halting the single and double leg shot, but also how to use your opponent's takedown attempts to lock in ruthless submission holds.

This DVD is great. Obviously Nog has one of the best guards in the history of MMA, and he shows all his best moves with the help of his brother Rogerio. It's all geared towards MMA, and Nogueira himself explains the details. He covers everything from reversals to submissions. The quality of the DVD is among the best I've ever seen. Audio, video, and the menus are all flawless. I highly recommend this DVD.

Over the course of his legendary Mixed Martial Arts career, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira developed the most effective, feared, and celebrated ground fighting system in existence. While climbing to the top of the MMA mountain, he used this system to not only defeat a host of the world s top fighters, including Mark Coleman, Mirco CroCop Filipovic, and Tim Sylvia, but also claim title belts in Rings, the Pride Fighting Championships, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship the triple crown of MMA.In GUARD FOR MMA, Nogueira unleashes for the first time his entire guard system. He demonstrates how to obtain control of your opponent utilizing his patented posture control positions, and then use those control positions to lock in brutal submissions, execute seamless sweeps, and make smooth transitions to more dominant positions. Unlike most DVDs, this is not a random collection of moves. In GUARD FOR MMA, every technique is tied together, allowing you to capitalize on your opponent s defensive reactions. Over twenty years in the making, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira s guard system leaves no stone unturned.
