Eddie Bravo's "The Twister" (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) Review

Eddie Bravo's The Twister (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Twister itself is a great DVD, and was everything I expected, if not more. What I expected was a series of Eddie Bravo's matches with his commentary. I really (really!) prefer this format for watching matches than, say, a plain Mundial or ADCC video. I first encountered it on Michael Jen's Dynamic BJJ: Inside the Game DVD and it just makes the matches so much more interesting, educational, and watchable it's a crying shame more people haven't made releases in this format.
Eddie is a gifted speaker. Clear, relevant, and outrageously funny. ("No Shpine Lock!" "I either pulled half-guard or just shot the double and slammed him, can't remember...") He explains what he's doing during the match and, more importantly, what he's thinking and why he's doing it. Obviously, the eponimus Twister plays a big part, as do the 'old school', 'lockdown', and other uniquely Bravo moves.
From his blue belt, through purple and brown belt matches, to Royler in ADCC (afterwhich I believe he was awarded his black), a good sampling of matches are offered. Most of the matches show an almost identical (consistent) gameplan, how he executes it, and (also very importantly) how he gets back to it, or switches to a back up, when things don't go as planned. (The secret of his success right there.) Yes, apparently, if you're super dedicated, have very good mind-set, are flexible, and (for Royler) become montrously strong for your weight, you can be a world champ with a small set of specialized gameplans, and just one side. :)
As a bonus, Bravo intersperses comedy sketches like a take off of MTV cribs, his demands for a PrideFC contract (starts with $1M and veiled 'work'), etc.
Easter eggs include instructional segments where he teaches a calf-crush from the lockdown called 'Kamakaze', and the overhook triangle he tapped Royler with (and although the fact that he tapped Royler is mentioned once and a while on the DVD, it is not, as perhaps it could have been, replacing the 10th Planet logo on his T-Shirt). Other easter eggs include comedy skits ranging from his Man Show submission to an imitation of a Brazilian BJJ teacher teaching... er... other forms of ground activity instead of grappling. Funny stuff.
Only downside is that easter eggs, while fun, can be annoying to get to for repeat viewing, and some may be turned off by seeing very similar matches time after time (though they should probably know better).
All in all, excellent DVD, one of the few that will probably be appreciated by a wider audience than just BJJ zealots.
Easter Eggs:
From Scene Selection
1. Highlight Thick and Meaty. Wait 2 minutes.
2. Highlight Royler. Wait a minute.
Go to the Bonus Area section. Highlight the arrow, and push (in sequence) down, left left left, enter.
Jeopardy Music will play on Dot Screen.
3. Highlight the 4th dot from the left on top and hit enter
4. Highlight the last dot on the bottom row and hit enter.
5. On top row, move the cursor all the way to the left until it is off the screen. Hit enter.
Note: Not all material on this DVD is suitable for all audiences. Parental discretion definately advised.

In the early 1900's the legendary Gracie family invented Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a ground fighting martial art, with influences from Judo and Wrestling that focuses on chokes and joint locks.By the early 90's, the Gracies proved on world-wide pay-per-view that their style of Jiu Jitsu was the most effective martial art in the entire world by defeating all other styles in no rules cage fighting. Now meet Eddie Bravo, a man who became famous for his style of Jiu Jitsu. He bacame the first Jiu Jitsu fighter in the world to master the "spine wrenching, neck cranking" torture hold called "The Twister".This move was later to become banned by the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.Even with his signature move outlawed, Eddie won the ADCC trials and earned the "Most Technical Fighter of the Night" award, earning him a spot in the 2003 Abu Dhabi Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Abu Dhabi Championship is the biggest and most prestigious Jiu Jitsu tournament in the world where Royler Gracie, son of the legendary Helio Gracie (the inventor of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), has dominated every year. That is, until he ran into "The Twister".

X Training with Randy Couture Volume 1 Review

X Training with Randy Couture Volume 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for an instructional DVD, this really is not it. There is about 5 minutes of actual techniques, the rest of it is just a bunch of dudes hanging out and other behind the scenes footage. On top of which its terribly shot! The cover art and packaging are the best things about this product! Sorry to say, but I feel ripped off! Hence the trouble I went to of writing this review. For value for your money get the Learn to Fight stuff, trust me.
I am a huge Couture fan. It took me years of traditional martial art b.s. to get to the point where I could see the value of what a genius wrestler like Couture can add to your game. Wrestling is the bridge between striking and the ground, and being truly dominant in this phase will win fights in the ring or on the street. Also, for the jiu jitsu people, it is great to get a different perspective on the ground. Randy drew with Jacare in a submission match, so he's no slouch.
You just won't see all that on this DVD! Look elsewhere for instruction, Grasshopper...

Mike Swain's Judo (1990) Review

Mike Swain's Judo (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased this DVD and found it 25% useful. Why 25%? Well the rest of the DVD seem to have no sound (i.e. both the replaced and original order). I have notified Black Belt as well as Amazon of this problem and hopefully they will address this issue ASAP as it is frustrating and disappointing to say the least. However, from what I have previewed so far (with sound) is quite good and very useful for the budding judoka. I am crossing my fingers to preview a working version of this DVD (2nd replacement) and provide some positive feedback.

Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Grappling Instructional Series Review

Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Grappling Instructional Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a top notch well organized DVD set from master trainer Cesar Gracie.
A couple things make this a special deal:
1) The techniques cover both Gi and no-Gi.
2) The moves flow in a logical order - it is not just a hodge podge of techniques.
3) Many of the moves are unique, and not shown in other tape series.
4) Cesar's English is much clearer and easier to understand than most jiu jitsu instructors.
5) The price can't be beat.
If you want to improve your jiu jitsu game, this is a great buy.

Saulo Ribeiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Revolution Series One. Six Volume DVD Instructional Series for Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts Review

Saulo Ribeiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Revolution Series One. Six Volume DVD Instructional Series for Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This six set DVD covers the major aspects of BJJ: Mount, Cross Body (ie side control), Back, Guard, Half Guard, Passing Guard. The only other piece needed for a complete sport game is takedowns, which are covered in Series Two. All instruction is with gi, with Saulo demonstrating on Chris (one of his brown belts) for around 15 techniques per video.
The techniques lean towards offense, so for example Half Guard spends more time passing and submitting than defending or sweeping. Saulo does a great job of emphasizing a consistent theme in each DVD. For example in the Cross Body DVD the first few sequences demonstrate the importance of controlling the opponents hips with your weight, as opposed to with arm positioning or grips, and he reiterates this point in every cross body technique. This theme of using your core positioning rather than limbs to maintain control comes across as one of the key tenets of Saulo's approach. Another key point is that jiu-jitsu is not as simple as learning a set of magic techniques that always work, and Saulo teaches you to recognize the moment (it sounds like "momentum" sometimes but it's "moment") in which a technique will be most effective.
Overall this series is very good. As a white belt who has trained for six months, I found the half-guard DVD particularly enlightening, both the specific passes and the general philosophy for defending and sweeping. The only complaint is that the series emphasizes advanced techniques at the expense of basics. This is most pronounced on the Guard DVD, where the basic submissions (armbar, lapel choke, kimura, triangle) aren't touched, while multiple butterfly sweeps are. Bill Lewis's online review says this is probably due to marketing concerns of avoiding material well-trodden by other series. Still, I found Saulo's series most valuable when it laid out correct body placement on basic moves and positions as opposed to exotic submissions, and having this for the full range of "BJJ 101" would have been nice.
Another minor complaint - both Saulo and Chris are wearing shiny white gis and sometimes it's hard to tell exactly where an arm or leg is positioned. Kind of an obvious oversight in what otherwise is a very well produced set.
Overall though anyone up to a blue should find this set greatly clarifies some basic points and erases many of the misconceptions you've picked up early in training. I'm guessing advanced belts will benefit from the more advanced techniques, but I'll leave that to another reviewer to confirm.

Mastering The Rubber Guard Review

Mastering The Rubber Guard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been training in BJJ for only 5 months and obviously still a white belt. One thing I noticed is how I always found myself in the half guard (about 70% of the time), constantly trying to keep my opponents leg from passing into side control. At the same time I was taught to stick in the butterfly hook in and sweep him before he is able to finagle his leg out and control me from the side. Needless to say my percentage was very low in sweeping anyone, unless they were a newbie white belt. I was extremely frustrated and never wanted to be on my back, but all of the bigger and stronger guys were able to muscle me to the floor at the beginning of rolling.
Then I came across the half guard game that Eddie teaches with the lock down. What a difference! With the Rubber Guard DVD I started practicing mechanics of Old School, Electric Chair, and Returning to Full Guard. It has been about two months since my start, and I have become proficient, but not perfect; But no one in my gym seems to know about this system, or want to learn it so I got away with moves even if they are semi sloppy. This gave me the comfort and confidence on being on my back! I think a couple guys have the Rubber Guard book, but no one has shown me or attacked with a lock down/grape vine, or any rubber guard for that fact. Maybe they are not flexible or are embarrassed to use it because it is not taught in my school.
WHAT THIS REVIEW IS ULTIMATELY ABOUT:
The other day I had to roll with the second head instructor of my school. No doubt, a black belt, given by Carlos Gracie Jr. I had never rolled with him before, but everyone told me how strong, efficient, and great he is. He let me fall into his guard and the first three minutes and as we were moving and rolling, he caught me in a arm triangle choke. I was kind of embarrassed because I saw it coming and was almost able to defend it, but it was to late. Then, I decided to let him come to me, and I pulled him into my half guard. Quickly I pulled the lock down, softly, not to alert him to what I was trying to do. Then as I went for the Old school Sweep, I noticed there was also an opportunity to go for the electric chair. I figured if there was ever a chance to submit my instructor, this would be it! I under hooked his leg and I tried to whip my leg up and across, but all of his weight was on the back leg. For a split second I thought to myself, "Damn, this guy also studied Eddie Bravo's Guard!" But no more then 3 seconds later, I felt his weight shift off the back leg, and I quickly whipped my lock down to the left and he fell right into the Electric Chair. In hopes that he would realized he was done, I didn't want to go to hard because I was afraid of hurting his hamstrings. But, I could tell on his face that the discomfort was not enough for him to tap. He tried to defend by grabbing my head, but I jolted it back and cranked it up. All I could hear was my other instructor/friend in my head say, "Never Let go!" Needless to say he tapped a couple seconds later. It was almost surreal to see a black belt on the floor ashamed that a white belt just tapped him out.
I can't wait to utilized the other 90% of the DVD's instructions. If this is what the 10 percent can do for me, then I can't wait to use the rest. Just always remember to work on flexibility, and repeat the drills over and over, until you get the mechanics engraved into your brain. If it worked for me, it can work for anyone!

Got this set for Christmas. I'm a BJJ purple belt and wanted to add more leglocks to my submission game. First two discs are takedowns directly to leglocks, while the other 4 discs are leglocks from inside guard (3), outside guard (4), across the side (5) and from the mount and back (6). Was impressed with the variety and positions from which the attacks come from. I would dock the set a half star because of the production, which is good, but still a few years old, but it's not enough to dock it a full star. Other than that, a great set that I hope to start implementing into my game soon.

Rickson Gracie: Choke (1999) Review

Rickson Gracie: Choke (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rickson Gracie "Choke" is more than just a fight video - it captures the anxiety, preparation, and visceral intensity behind the competitors as they prepare for competition. View at the Ultimate Fighting Championship with a much deeper background.
The video captures the preparation for, and competition in Vale Tudo Japan 1995, a mixed martial arts competition where almost anything goes. ("Vale Tudo" is Portuguese for "Anything Goes", but the rules are not quite that extreme.)
The video takes an in depth look at 3 of the participants.
1 - Todd Hays is an all around gifted athlete, with a background in kickboxing. His mixture and fear are apparent as he attempts to use this event to pay for his Olympic bobsleading dreams.
2 - Koichiro Kimura is a Japanese amateur shootfighting champion, who wants nothing more than to test himself against the best. You get to meet his parents, who are affraid he'll die in the ring.
3 - Rickson Gracie is the defending champion, as well as the best of the famous Gracie family. It's no suprise that he gets the lion's share of the publicity.
In addition to the gritty reality of the fighting, you're introduced to some humorous back scene footage: Rickson's desire for a belt in addition to a trophy brings some chuckles, as does his last minute desire to hit the restroom. A near blind Yuki Nakai is both valiant and funny when he screams, "Rickson, I'm coming for you!"
If you're looking for a technique video, this is not it. If you're looking for 2 hours of fighting from the best guys out there today, again this is not the video. If you're looking to understand the mind of the fighter, in the context of the ring, this is the only DVD out there. I was rivited from start to finish.

This exquisite piece of work is far more professional than any of the American pro wrestling mega-event videos produced recently. The often-gory fights are well handled and only play a small role; this video is not solely about fighting. Done in documentary style, "Choke" takes an introspective look at the men--their goals, their dreams, and their families--who become the ultimate fighting machines in the ring at the 1995 Vale Tudo World Fighting Championship in Tokyo. \nDelving into the life of the undefeated and undisputed world freestyle fighting champion, Rickson Gracie, a 30-year-old jujitsu expert from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this video displays a side that you rarely see in sports: the articulate, intelligent family man who turns his training into the art of movement and athleticism--not violence. It also explores the world of two men expected to offer a serious challenge to Gracie: American heavyweight kickboxer Todd "Hollywood" Hays and Japanese shootfighting heavyweight champion Koichiro Kimura. These two men provide some of the more uplifting moments in the documentary. Hays, who is also a member of the U.S. Olympic bobsled team, explains how he will use his performance money to fund his dream of buying a bobsled that will allow him to be a driver in the 1998 Winter Games. Kimura completes his training but then has to ask the permission of his elderly parents to compete. The big man bluffs his way through with a warm smile and a respectful manner.\n"Choke" is an insightful look at a full-contact, controversial sport. The only warning it should carry is that some of the scenes are graphically violent and some of the language is X-rated. "--Gordie Sholtys"

with this dvd coming from a member of the 10th planet jiu jitsu, i was def expecting some innovative & effective techniques...& to my suprise, i was not disapointed at all. Here this dvd shows six deifferent types of no-gi chokes that will def catch your partners off guard & tapping faster than you can imagine. the dvd shows about 15 - 20 types of set-ups for the specific chokes on each dvd (there are 3dvds total) and shows from multiple angles and multiple replays...and you can go straight to the specific technique that you want to watch so you can re-watch the choke to pratice yourself. All in all this is a pretty good investment in instructional dvds on no-gi..and for the type of chokes shown here, you might not find these in any other dvds around for a while. ( believe me i tried searching You-tube)with that being said, if money is a issue, you could try finding a friend with a copy to see for yourself but you won't be disapointed if you took a deep breath & just see for yourself.
