(More customer reviews)This DVD, and it's companion (Vol II) are far and away the best coaching videos I've ever seen. I coach High School basketball, and our small coaching library has 19 coaching tapes, and I myself have 21. The important point with these DVDs is that they are planned, directed and produced FOR basketball coaches. Other companies (take a guess: rhymes with "...ampionship productions") drag a camcorder into a basketball camp, lazily film the shortest clinics they can find, spend 2 minutes adding titles and whatnot, and then charge $40 for them. By comparison these are expertly planned and executed. Each drill is creatively introduced with a montage of clips from the drill, followed by Hurley's explanation to the players. During the drill itself you hear Hurley talking to individual players about specific focus points, and right before he does this the camera spotlights the player he will be correcting, so you know who to watch and can understand the context of his comments. (Little details like this are a brilliant idea and really help.) At the end of the drill a list of focus points comes up for several seconds -- helpful to those of us who are note-takers. All the drills are also available with Hurley's commentary. The on-court audio is reduced, and Hurley's voice-over thoroughly explains and discusses each drill.
Using his team is helpful, because we get to see the result of the culture he has built up over the years. This allows us to see important things that he didn't get around to discussing. For instance, I loved the constant chatter from his team during the drills. All his players talked and communicated constantly throughout the drills. The effect on their intensity and teamwork was obvious.
If you could have just two DVDs to plan your bread and butter for a season, these two DVDs would be the ones to get.
If coach Hurley came out with a Vol III and IV, I would buy them in a second!
