This was an exceptionally interesting segment. The subject was stress, anxiety disorders, fear and brain function. I learned much from it, including the idea that the old idea about brain cells dying and never being replaceable is wrong. Instead it seems to be the case that the Brain is more flexible than previously thought, and new cells can form.
Much is made of the idea that 'stress' of the good kind helps keep us alive, respond to threats. But that if the alarm system which raises our immunity and energy when first turned on is not turned down it becomes in time 'bad stress' which leads to great anxiety and fear. The experts all agree also that while genetic information is critical there is usually an environmental external component in stress situation. And this though it is also pointed out that humans are the 'imagining creature' who can make situations of stress out of thin air.
Rose asks particular interesting question. One expert Joseph Ledoux is interested in the question of how the brain makes the self. Another Dennis Charney is interested in tracing the physiological effects of psychotherapy. The third expert MacEwen seeems primarily interested in questions of how to help people turn away from bad stress. He points out that exercise can help reduce bad stress in significant ways.
This was a very well- done segment.
