(More customer reviews)China expert Elizabeth Economy was given only five minutes to speak about China. But in it she argued forcefully that China has gone backwards on the key issue of individual human rights. She points to the worsening treatment of dissidents. Her remarks directly contradicted those of two other China experts Joseph Kahn and Philip Pan. They argued China is more free today in every way than it was ten years ago. They also say China is trying to show the world a new model, an authoritarian capitalism which works. They do hint at some of the major problems but essentially they have a very apologetic tone towards China.
The conversation with senior diplomat Richard Holbrooke focuses on a recent article he has written about what the next President should have on his agenda. Holbrooke is very experienced and knowledgable and it is possible to learn much from him. But he too is a fervent Obama supporters and he openly propagandizes for him throughout the program. This seemed to me unfair. But in many areas he shows a great deal of knowledge and understanding. And students of foreign affairs will find his perceptions of value and of interest.
