For me the best part of this interview was when Joe Paterno turned and said to Charlie Rose in front of the camera , what I suspect the greatest share of those interviewed by Rose have felt. He thanked him for his civility, and for his ability to listen, qualities Paterno said are increasingly lacking in society today. Rose made some humorous response to this, a nice kind of modest reaction.
As with so many of his guests Rose had good chemistry with Paterno. He spoke to him about his early days in Brooklyn, his Catholic education, his years of being assistant to Rip Engle at Penn State, the long career as winning coach. Paterno and Rose speak after a successful season for Paterno ( 11-1, and an Orange Bowl) win , this after three rocky seasons and an attempt to retire him. He is seventy- nine at the time of the interview.
He is an old school guy and apparently a very decent one. He says he worries for the education of his athletes and one of those coaches who follows what happens to those who have played for him. He speaks about football as a sport which requires discipline, sacrifice, teamplay. He talks about his own career and his failure to take offers to coach in the Pros.
Paterno is not a brilliant speaker and he has no great memorable remarks. But he appears as someone extremely smart, and dedicated. He also speaks of his love of books and his dedication of a Penn State library on his and his wife's name. Paterno is a person of football and the family both of which he is dedicated to.
One of the nice things about the Charlie Rose show is being able to see and hear people one has heard about for years, but does not know in person. Seeing and hearing Paterno was an instance of this for me.
