The NFL's Greatest Games: The Ice Bowl Review

The NFL's Greatest Games: The Ice Bowl

The ice bowl is the first football game I have clear memory of. This tape, which is very well done, sets s up the game by showing what happened the year before in the championship game in Dallas, and how the Cowboys were ready to avenge that loss. Also, juxtaposed nicely, are the story of the 1967 packers, in the final year of their glory under Vince Lombardi. The tape brings the voice of Ray Scott, longtime voice of the packers and the NFL before the corporate suits took over the broadcast booth with ex jocks. The the game itself is shown virtually in its entirity, with clever voiceover by Scott sounding very much .like it did that day. With the temperature being -16 below zero, the players and fans literally were trying to survive as well as win. This is the best of the NFL tapes that I have seen, perhaps because of the seminal importance of the game,or simply for nostalgic reasons. Either way, this is an excellent tape and a good bargain, considering that you are likely to re-watch a sports tape. And, listening to the voice of the great Ray Scott is a distinct pleasure.

Mlb: 1969 World Series - Ny Mets Vs Baltimore Review

Mlb: 1969 World Series - Ny Mets Vs Baltimore

In late 1969 when new American prisoners were brought to North Vietnamese prison camps they were always questioned by their fellow P.O.W.'s as to what was happening in the real world. When they were updated on the big news events the men who had been held captive for a while were willing to believe that America had landed a man on the moon, but they could not accept the fact that the New York Mets won the World Series in 1969. The Amazin' Mets had never had a winning record before 1969, but behind a pitching staff led by starters Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman and Gary Gentry (in their third, second and first seasons in the majors, respective) and with Tug McGraw and some kid named Nolan Ryan in the bullpen, the team became the Miracle Mets that year.
This was the first season of division play and after the Mets came from behind down the stretch to pull away from the Chicago Cubs and actually win 100 games, they swept the Atlanta Braves in three games to go on and face the Baltimore Orioles led by future Hall of Famers Frank and Brooks Robinson. Mike Cuellar defeated Seaver 4-1 in the first game in Baltimore and it looked like the Met's bubble had finally burst. But then Koosman out dueled the O's other 20 game winner, Dave McNally 2-1. When the series went back to Shea Stadium Gentry and Ryan combined on a 5-0 shutout defeating Jim Palmer. Game 4 saw Seaver redeem himself for being the only Met pitcher in history to lose a World Series game (at that point), with a 2-1 victory over Cuellar in 10 innings. Koosman picked up his second series win with a complete game 5-3 victory as the Mets claimed the title.
This first World Series title will always be the sweetest for Met fans, balls rolling through Bill Buckner's legs to the contrary. The video looks like it is from another century, but all of the moments you remember are preserved: the great plays in the outfield by Tommy Agee and Ron Swoboda, J.C. Martin's pivotal bunt, the three homers by Donn Clendenon, and the blazing bat of utility infielder Al Weis. My favorite memory is the home run by Ed Kranepool in the one game he started under Manager Gil Hodge's platoon system, since the left-handed first baseman had been with the team since coming up in that first season when they set a record for losing games. But the sight of Met's third baseman Ed Charles leaping in the air in celebration after what would prove to be his final professional game, is also still vivid.
Personal Note: We were living in Japan listening to the World Series games in the middle of the night on Armed Forces Radio in 1969. I thought I had learned the previous year, when the Tigers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series in 7 games, that every time I listened to a game the team I wanted to win ended up losing. But after missing Game 1 in 1969 it became clear that if I listened the National League team won. Since I was rooting for the Mets I had to get up for the next four games. But for Game 5 I did not wake up until the game was half over and the Orioles were up 3-0, at which point the Mets scored five runs in their last three at bats to clinch the title. Unfortunately, we moved back to the United States and I was not able to influence any more World Series games, having done so successfully 12 games in a row.

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp Review

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp
Average Reviews:

After being pushed back almost a year from it's original release date, "Dragon's Lair II: TimeWarp" FINALLY sees the light of day. The animation is flawless and is even better than the original arcade version was as far as smoothness and color use. I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. There are no annoying pauses in between the moves much like "Dragon's Lair" and "Space Ace". There's even a "Director's Cut" of the final sequence of scenes that can be played as part of the actual game. Finally for those of us that cannot afford to buy an arcade cabinet of our own, or track down all the necessary equipment (the right laserdisc player model and original laserdisc) to play on our PC's, we too can enjoy this faithful translation of an arcade classic in the comfort of our own homes! All in all the only bad thing was the loooong delay of a release date. Way to go Digital Leisure! Oh, and in case you're wondering I am using a 60 GB PS3 to play it and I have no firmware or hardware issues at all. AAA+++!!!

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006) Review

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006)

I love a good work of fiction but sometimes reality can be very entertaining. This series is well-made and so intense and passionate that it brought me to tears more than one time. Every episode is a unique road to the superbowl by the team who won it and told by 3 important actors of the team. The 1985 conquest of the Bears for example is told by Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary and Jim McMahon. The stories that leads to the big game are fascinating, touching and often surprising. I love the series so much that I was comtemplating buying the first DVDs on the market which focus on one particular team and all the superbowls they won. But now, I was happy to see that they compile everything in one package. The packaging is very well made, the 40 DVDs being separated in 4 eras (66-75)(76-85)(86-95)and (96-05), 10 discs by DVD. Also, an interesting 88 page book with every conquest by every team. On the DVDs you have also a bunch of interviews that we couldn't see on the NFL network. If you love the NFL this is a great work by NFL films and Steve Sabol and a great piece of history to possess. The only thing missing is the Colts Superbowl last year but the documentary is about the first 40 Superbowl so we can't have everything unfortunately.

Sega Dreamcast Sports Pack Review

Sega Dreamcast Sports Pack

OK, so the Playstation 2 is finally out, but does it measure up - not if you run the numbers. I will admit that I was saving my money (and had enough) to buy a playstation 2, but once I played it I went with the dreamcast for a few big reasons. First, is the graphics on the playstation 2 better than the dream cast - YES. Are they ... better - NO. When you are buying a PS2 you are basically buying a dreamcast that plays DVD's but it's not worth the money. Let me explain why. The PS2 system is ... by itself, no games, mememory card, or extra controler. So after you have purchased these items you are looking at about ... in purchases (that's estimating you get 3 games like most of the bundle packs offer and including tax). However, with the dreamcast sports pack at it's current price you can get the dreamcast consoul, five games, an extra controler, and a memory card for about ... (I know this because I did it last week). That still leave you about ... dollers left over to either (1) purchase more games, or (2) go buy a good quality DVD player. Don't get me wrong, the PS2 is a good quality system, but it's over priced. Don't buy it for it's DVD capabilities, remember DVD movies run ... to ... and buy and large unless you have a home theater system you won't enjoy the full benefit of a DVD player. So in short, save your money and if you want a really good gaming system - go with the Dreamcast.
