The NFL's Greatest Games: The Ice Bowl Review

The NFL's Greatest Games: The Ice Bowl

The ice bowl is the first football game I have clear memory of. This tape, which is very well done, sets s up the game by showing what happened the year before in the championship game in Dallas, and how the Cowboys were ready to avenge that loss. Also, juxtaposed nicely, are the story of the 1967 packers, in the final year of their glory under Vince Lombardi. The tape brings the voice of Ray Scott, longtime voice of the packers and the NFL before the corporate suits took over the broadcast booth with ex jocks. The the game itself is shown virtually in its entirity, with clever voiceover by Scott sounding very much .like it did that day. With the temperature being -16 below zero, the players and fans literally were trying to survive as well as win. This is the best of the NFL tapes that I have seen, perhaps because of the seminal importance of the game,or simply for nostalgic reasons. Either way, this is an excellent tape and a good bargain, considering that you are likely to re-watch a sports tape. And, listening to the voice of the great Ray Scott is a distinct pleasure.

NFL Super Bowl I-XL Collector's Set (2010) Review

NFL Super Bowl I-XL Collector's Set (2010)

This is pure heaven for any true NFL fan. Highlights of every Superbowl since 1967 are presented here in one glorious package. Each Superbowl has a 25-30 min ducumentary about the game itself and is preceeded by a 20 min review of the season that led up to it. Not only this but each game also has a couple of extra documentaries about the key players/events. The photography is fantastic, the music is adrenaline-pounding and the packaging/booklets include full player listings, score breakdowns, programme covers and reproduction tickets.
This box set will only disappoint those who were expecting the full game broadcast for every Superbowl but then does anyone truly think that's feasible at over 3 1/2 hours per game! Go on, treat yourself and work through them 1 to 40 to get a fascinating insight into the development of the game and first sight of every classic play.

NHL Original 6: NY Rangers Stanley Cup Champions 1994 - DVD Review

Clearly 5 stars for the overall quality and packaging of this set (even includes Mark Messier Night as a bonus.) However, I take away a star for the games not being completely uncut (e.g., the end of Game 6 vs. Devils - the skirmish between Anderson & Nichols is edited out.) A relatively minor point perhaps since no game time is lost, but this is still annoying and totally unnecessary. Regardless, a nice and overdue DVD addition to any hockey fan's library--especially Rangers fans! Also, die-hard Ranger fans beware: some games are taken from the ESPN feeds, so no Sam & J.D. Although it is interesting to see and hear these games via a different lens and commentary, I was a bit disappointed in this production choice for some of these games.

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006) Review

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006)

I love a good work of fiction but sometimes reality can be very entertaining. This series is well-made and so intense and passionate that it brought me to tears more than one time. Every episode is a unique road to the superbowl by the team who won it and told by 3 important actors of the team. The 1985 conquest of the Bears for example is told by Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary and Jim McMahon. The stories that leads to the big game are fascinating, touching and often surprising. I love the series so much that I was comtemplating buying the first DVDs on the market which focus on one particular team and all the superbowls they won. But now, I was happy to see that they compile everything in one package. The packaging is very well made, the 40 DVDs being separated in 4 eras (66-75)(76-85)(86-95)and (96-05), 10 discs by DVD. Also, an interesting 88 page book with every conquest by every team. On the DVDs you have also a bunch of interviews that we couldn't see on the NFL network. If you love the NFL this is a great work by NFL films and Steve Sabol and a great piece of history to possess. The only thing missing is the Colts Superbowl last year but the documentary is about the first 40 Superbowl so we can't have everything unfortunately.

NFL America's Game - The Super Bowl Champions - San Francisco 49ers Collection Review

NFL America's Game - The Super Bowl Champions - San Francisco 49ers Collection

If you've never seen any of the America's Game episodes then you are missing out. This is by far a very different NFL films product - much less of the frustrating super slow motion footage and more about the actual games themselves.
This particular product is a must-have for any 49ers fan. The 1981 DVD in particular is outstanding, but all 5 DVDs are of very high quality. One of the unique aspects of this set of DVDs is how they each compliment each other, and basically recap the franchise between the years 1979-1994. For example, the 1984 DVD picks up where the 1981 DVD left off, and talks about how the 49ers didn't make the playoffs in 1982 and lost in the NFC Championship game in '83.
The DVD also faithfully re-caps the Quarterback controversy of 1988, which brings me to the only bad thing I can say about this collection; the absence of Joe Montana. NFL films uses enough stock footage of previous Montana interviews to keep fans satisfied, but much like the fantastic Dennis Georgatos book Game Of My Life, Montana's absence is the only noticeable flaw, but a glaring one at that.
Is this enough to recommend against purchase? Of course not!! Even die-hard 49er (and NFL) fans will be reminded of some awesome highs and a few of the lows which they may have forgotten about.
My final example illustrates the in-depth nature of the DVDs: during the 1984 season San Fransisco went 18-1. Their one loss during the season? Week 7 against the Steelers. At the end of the game Pittsburgh was driving for the win, but San Fransisco was able to stop them on downs at the goaline, but on the 4th down play, Ronnie Lott was called for a penalty which, although later shown to be a bad call, gave Pittsburgh a fresh set of downs and helped them win the game. The DVD includes all of this footage, from the actual broadcast, but it doesn't unnecessarily dwell on mundane details. My point is that each DVD is packed with information, but they keep up a good pace to keep the audience entertained.
