Field of Dreams (1989) Review

Hi...
this is a great movie..great transfer and great extra features...commentary, roundtable with hall of fame baseball players...bravo special ...current day update on the actual field of dreams location....BUT , and its a big one...it does NOT contain the fabulous hour long making of documentary from the initial release!!! as well as many of the other bonus features....
so.....if you are a fan , you will most likely want both editions...
I don't understand why they couldn't have included the bonus features from the first "collectors" edition to make this the definitive issue...but Like ON GOLDEN POND ...you get a newer edition with great extras which don't duplicate the original....
anyway...just thought I'd warn fans out there who are thinking of "trading up" for the new edition...

1975 World Series - Cincinnati Reds vs Boston Red Sox Review

1975 World Series - Cincinnati Reds vs Boston Red Sox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Boston Red Sox won the best game in the history of the World Series but unfortunately that was in Game 6 and not Game 7 and the Cincinnati Reds ended up winning the first of two consecutive titles in 1975. Of course, now we know that because they sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees the Curse of the Bambino fates the Bosox to lose any World Series in which they play in seven games. The Big Red Machine had won 108 games during the regular season and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Championship series and then promptly ran into Luis Tiant who pitched a five hit shutout in Game 1. The question then became how often Boston could pitch Tiant, which ended up being not often enough. The Reds came up with a pair of runs in the ninth inning to pull out a 3-2 victory in Game 2 and the drama was on.
It goes without saying that everybody remembers Carlton Fisk's home run to win the epic Game 6, but there was other drama in this series involving the Boston catcher, namely the wild throw he made in Game 3 after getting tangled with Cincinnati pinch-hitter Ed Armbrister during an attempted sacrifice bunt that led to the winning run. Tiant pitched another complete game and Tony Perez hit a pair of home runs as the Red Sox and Reds split the next two games to send the series back to Boston.
Watching the highlights of Game 6 only confirms what we already know about how great of a game this was; but did you know that the only reason the television camera stayed on Fisk when he hit his ball down the left field foul line in the 12th inning and urged the ball to stay fair was that a giant rat inside the Green Monster kept the cameraman from following the flight of the ball? Instead we got to see Fisk's frantic gyrations and the "reaction shot" was born in the wonderful wide world of sports broadcasting.
Eventually, after a couple of days of rain cooled off everybody, they finally played Game 7, and the finale was a pretty good baseball game in its all right. The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead but the Reds came back to tie the game in the 7th inning and once again a game in the 1975 World Series was decided in the final inning. This explains why relief pitchers got credit for three of the Big Red Machine's four wins. What more could you ask for? (this question only applies to those who are not Boston Red Sox fans). Pete Rose led all batters with a .370 average and was named Series MVP. Of course, nobody remembers anything he did in the series, all because of that Fisk fellow.

Contained in these ten DVD's are just about every historical moment in baseball.
Inning 1 Baseball from its inception in the 1840's to the 1900's This explores baseballs roots from Abner Doubleday to the beginnings of what we know as modern day baseball.
Inning 2 1900 to 1910. The beginning of the World Series. Great footage and photos of old parks and players.
Inning 3 1910 TO 1920. Covers Babe Ruth, the Black sox, Grover Cleveland Alexander and more. Footage of Fenway being built
Inning 4 1920 to 1930 Really the beginnings of the Yankee dynasty but the Cardinals rule the National league with the famed gas house gang.
Inning 5 1930 to 1940. More footage of all the great stars of the day, Ruth, DiMaggio, Williams and more.
Inning 6 1940 to 1950. The effects of war on the American pastime. The splendid splinter goes to war, he comes back and picks up where he left off.
Inning 7 1950 to 1960. The Yankee dynasty continues. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, The shot heard around the world, Don Larson's perfect game. The Giants and Dodgers pick and leave.
Inning 8 1960 to 1970. The Los Angeles Angels are born, The Kansas City A's become the Oakland A's, The Royals and Mets are born. The Padres are born and move into a small stadium outside of San Diego. And then there was the Seattle Pilots. Those amazin Mets win the World series. Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax get agents but are unsuccessful in changing baseballs anti trust act and re sign with the Dodgers. Maris passes the Babe with an asterisk.
Inning 9 1970 to 1994. Curt Flood loses his war against baseball but the players eventually win. The players union gets stronger. The Reds come to power. The A's win a couple world series. Roberto Clemente's life cut short. Washington loses another team called the Senators.
The film also has some great commentary interspersed through out all of the DVD's. At the end of each DVD is a trivia game based on the decade that the DVD covered. While the movie is based for the most part on New York teams this is truly a must for all baseball fans. There is no other collection of materials that covers baseball like this one does in terms of breadth and depth.
I have watched this m any times now and it's still just as interesting as the first time I watched it.

Probably one of the few remaining video records of old Forbes Field in Pitsburgh as this World Series video takes you there. One of the weirdest, most wonderful World Series ever featuring a surprise climax. The Bucs were outscored badly by the Bronx Bombers in this one but all that counts is wins and losses.

Mlb: 1969 World Series - Ny Mets Vs Baltimore

(More customer reviews)
In late 1969 when new American prisoners were brought to North Vietnamese prison camps they were always questioned by their fellow P.O.W.'s as to what was happening in the real world. When they were updated on the big news events the men who had been held captive for a while were willing to believe that America had landed a man on the moon, but they could not accept the fact that the New York Mets won the World Series in 1969. The Amazin' Mets had never had a winning record before 1969, but behind a pitching staff led by starters Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman and Gary Gentry (in their third, second and first seasons in the majors, respective) and with Tug McGraw and some kid named Nolan Ryan in the bullpen, the team became the Miracle Mets that year.
This was the first season of division play and after the Mets came from behind down the stretch to pull away from the Chicago Cubs and actually win 100 games, they swept the Atlanta Braves in three games to go on and face the Baltimore Orioles led by future Hall of Famers Frank and Brooks Robinson. Mike Cuellar defeated Seaver 4-1 in the first game in Baltimore and it looked like the Met's bubble had finally burst. But then Koosman out dueled the O's other 20 game winner, Dave McNally 2-1. When the series went back to Shea Stadium Gentry and Ryan combined on a 5-0 shutout defeating Jim Palmer. Game 4 saw Seaver redeem himself for being the only Met pitcher in history to lose a World Series game (at that point), with a 2-1 victory over Cuellar in 10 innings. Koosman picked up his second series win with a complete game 5-3 victory as the Mets claimed the title.
This first World Series title will always be the sweetest for Met fans, balls rolling through Bill Buckner's legs to the contrary. The video looks like it is from another century, but all of the moments you remember are preserved: the great plays in the outfield by Tommy Agee and Ron Swoboda, J.C. Martin's pivotal bunt, the three homers by Donn Clendenon, and the blazing bat of utility infielder Al Weis. My favorite memory is the home run by Ed Kranepool in the one game he started under Manager Gil Hodge's platoon system, since the left-handed first baseman had been with the team since coming up in that first season when they set a record for losing games. But the sight of Met's third baseman Ed Charles leaping in the air in celebration after what would prove to be his final professional game, is also still vivid.
Personal Note: We were living in Japan listening to the World Series games in the middle of the night on Armed Forces Radio in 1969. I thought I had learned the previous year, when the Tigers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series in 7 games, that every time I listened to a game the team I wanted to win ended up losing. But after missing Game 1 in 1969 it became clear that if I listened the National League team won. Since I was rooting for the Mets I had to get up for the next four games. But for Game 5 I did not wake up until the game was half over and the Orioles were up 3-0, at which point the Mets scored five runs in their last three at bats to clinch the title. Unfortunately, we moved back to the United States and I was not able to influence any more World Series games, having done so successfully 12 games in a row.

Curt Gowdy narrates this one hour of highlights from a thrilling Series. Each game is given a good seven minutes or so, giving one a real feel for what it was like. The film is all in color (a nice contrast to "Classic Sports" replays of this series which have been b/w) and basically goes through each game inning by inning. Game 5 was especially thrilling: Lou Brock's dominance finally is ended when he's out at the plate in the most controversial play of the Series. Umpire Doug Harvey's explanation of his call is so thorough that it's funny. Let's hope "Classic Sports" gets this game 5 on someday. Until then, get this tape while it's still available, it's well worth it.

1984 World Series - Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres Review

1984 World Series - Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Detroit Tigers dominated baseball in 1984, starting off the season at a mind-numbing 35-5, then cruising to a MLB-best 104-58, remaining in first place the entire season. They quickly swept aside the Royals in 3 straight in the ALCS, then waited for San Diego to finish off the Cubs in 5.
The '84 World Series, despite the Padres experience, wasn't even close. Except for a come-from-behind win in Game 2, the Padres were mauled by the Tigers in 5 games. All of San Diego's starting pitchers were chased from the mound by the third inning, two of which didn't make it through the first! On the other side, Jack Morris pitched two complete games, Series MVP Alan Trammell batted .450 (including two home runs in Game 4), and Kirk Gibson buried San Diego for good in Game 5 with two upper deck home runs.
Until 2006, the "Bless You Boys" Tigers were the last great baseball team in Detroit. I'm sure we won't see a team start 35-5 or better again.

This is amazing. I had taped the Comcast/KNBR replay and dreaded having to edit the commercials out. The 8 DVD set has all 5 World Series games that have 4 audio options, and yes, Kruk, Kuip and Dave call the game!! The bonus disc is good, not enough of each clip but a great recap. ***** When you choose the KNBR audion option, there is blank air at the beginning, don't panic, they'll come on. You'll see the FOX video but KNBR is synched to the game. There are odd edits once in a while but you get the complete games with the best announcers in the world!!!!

"My biggest pitching problems have been staying back over the rubber, changing arm speed on off-speed pitches, and mentally losing focus after bloop hits, errors, walks, etc. These problems have caused inconsistency in velocity, command and composure. I have always underachieved in pitching. I found your program easy to use because it doesn't ask you to think, you just follow the steps and listen to the CD. It's an unbelievable thing! I used it before my last start and I couldn't believe the results. I have never felt so satisfied mentally and physically after a game."

1978 World Series - New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Dodgers Review

1978 World Series - New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Dodgers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 1978 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers was the tenth between the two storied franchises and the first series rematch since the Yankees and Milwaukee Braves took turns defeating each other in 1957 and 1958. The defending World Champion Yankees won their second title in a row in their third consecutive Fall Classic appearance, but dug themselves out of a hole to do so, dropping the first two games at Chez Ravine Stadium before winning four straight. Winning by making a come back was poetic justice in 1978 the Yankees had to over come a 14-game deficit in the American League East (not to mention the firing of manager Billy Martin who was then replaced by Bob Lemon) and then beat the Boston Red Sox on Bucky Dent's home run over the Green Monster in Fenway Park before defeating the Kansas City Royals for the third straight season in the American League Playoffs.
In Los Angeles the Yankees were bombed 11-5 in Game 1, with Davey Lopes hitting a pair of homeruns for the Dodgers, and then lost 4-3 in Game 2 with Ron Cey driving in all the runs for L.A. Because he pitched the playoff came in Boston, Yankee ace Ron Guidry, who sent 25-3 in the regular season, was not available to pitch until Game 3, at which point he beat Don Sutton 5-1. Reggie Smith's homer gave the Dodgers a 3-0 lead in Game 4, but the Yankees came back to win in 10 innings to even the series. Game 5 saw Yankee catcher Thurman Munson drive in five runs on the way to a 12-2 romp. Back in Los Angeles Catfish Hunter and Goose Gossage combined in the clinching 7-2 victory for another six game victory over the Dodgers. However, three years later the Los Angeles Dodgers would return the favor, dropping the first two games to the Yankees in New York and then winning four straight to earn Tommy Lasorda his first World Championship.
Bucky Dent, who batted .417 on 10 hits and had 7 RBIs, was named MVP while his keystone partner, reserve infielder Brian Doyle, led all batters with a .438 average, as the bottom of the batting order came through for the Yankees making the homer run heroic of Reggie Jackson from the previous World Series unnecessary. This color video runs about 45 minutes has all of the highlights of the 1978 season and World Series and a minimal number of shots of George Steinbrenner, making it a nice collection of memories for Yankee fans.

Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes To Life® - The Deluxe Lost Stories Edition (1993) Review

Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes To LifeĀ® - The Deluxe Lost Stories Edition (1993)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Review originally published in The Washington Post TV Week, May 16-22, 1999)
One of the best baseball videos ever produced, "Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes to Life®," came out 10 years ago and was duly acclaimed.
A current look at this tape confirms that view. For an hour, Mantle tells stories of fact, feat and, most all, frolic that center around his 18 glorious years as a hero, slugger and "bad boy" of the New York Yankees.
Mantle sits in his trophy room at home and tells his stories, (neither interviewer Lew Early nor his questions are on the tape) in a plain ol' down-home drawl, often with the back-lot grammar he learned while growing up in Commerce, Okla. It's priceless Mantle, and often while he's telling his tales, pictures and classic black-and-white film clips illustrate the people or events involved.
During the 50th anniversary year of Mantle's rookie year (1951), producer-director Lew Rothgeb and Baseball Legend Video are doubling the pleasure of fans with another hour's worth of Mantle stories that didn't make it onto the original video. Called the "Lost Stories, " they had been stored in a vault, unseen publicly. Over the years, Early said he was often asked if he had more stories of the late outfielder. This is the answer. The new video, still titled "Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes to Life®," contains the original hour of stories as well as the additional hour. The price is $29.95, plus $4.95 shipping. (To order, call 1-800-843-6425.) There is additional Mantle information on the Web site, [...].
Recounting too many of the stories Mantle tells in his own fashion would spoil the video for the viewer. But among his recollections, Mantle talks of his dad's dream for his son and how his father and grandfather pitched to him daily to be sure he attained the goal of playing in the major leagues. He relates how he was signed by Yankees scout Tom Greenwade on a train heading to Washington for the season's opener. He also tells of his awe on his first visit to Yankee Stadium and how he could feel the "ghosts" of legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
On the fun side, he tells of Casey Stengel's tabbing him, Billy Martin and Whitey Ford as "Whiskey Slick," mentions "nosy poker," and talks about in-flight jokes and pranks reserved for rookies (and Joe Pepitone in particular).
And he dispels the belief that he and teammate Roger Maris did not get along. He calls Maris a great player, person and friend who was amazingly precise about every phase of the game, and adds that if any of the four Mantle sons were looking for a role model, he wishes they would choose Maris.
"The Lost Stories" are every bit as warm and charming as the original batch. For baseball fans, especially Mantle buffs, this profile leaves a legacy that's as big a boomer as one of The Mick's tape-measure home runs.

"My son first began using the Mind Mastery For Hitting program at the end of his junior year in high school. The season that followed was just remarkable. The change in focus and concentration made a big difference in his approach not only to hitting, but on the ball field as well. He carried this success to fall ball and was selected to play on a showcase travel team that played at all the major colleges and universities in our area.

He played every weekend in front of college and pro scouts. At the end...he had eight colleges to choose from to play at the next level. During his tryout at the college he had eventually chosen, he went 3 for 3 at the plate. I can say that the Mind Mastery For Hitting program is the one key that made the difference. The Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series Collector's Edition (2005) Review

The Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series Collector's Edition (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bad News First: No games from the series against Anaheim (which were on ESPN rather than Fox), in which David Ortiz put on a hitting clinic--a one-disc overview would have been really nice. Really nice. . . . Thanks, ESPN, for helping out with copyright stuff. . . . That knocks it down to 4 1/2 stars right there. But the real drama came with the Yankees series, though, so I'll survive. I don't have a good enough system to notice some of the more technical picture/color/resolution issues that have been mentioned, so I'm fine with that, too, even though some others have voiced valid criticisms. That's pretty good for bad news. . . .
The Good News: Everything (and I mean everything!) is on these discs. This set of DVDs is a spectacular collection of the most important ALCS in Red Sox history, some of the most exciting baseball to be played in October, and then the World Series, which seemed terribly anti-climactic somehow after Games 4 & 5 against the Yankees and a nice partial comeback by the Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series. Whatever I might be missing from the Anaheim series, I get back twofold from this set--back up to 5 stars. Easy.
The Games: Aside from a disastrous Game 3 (which might be good to watch just to keep the comeback in even better perspective), the games were close, competitive, and dramatic. Some pretty good drama unfolded in Games 1 & 2, despite the Red Sox losses. Game 4 showcased a classic display of determination (by both teams) within a back-and-forth struggle, "the steal" by Dave Roberts, and the ultimate vintage walk-off home run by Ortiz in the bottom of the 12th inning. Game 5 followed in those big footsteps and provided possibly even more drama, with the Red Sox tying the game in the 8th inning and the two teams playing five more scoreless innings--each team with multiple opportunities to win the game, with the dramatic finish in the bottom of the 14th. That game went close to six hours, and we missed a great game between St. Louis and Houston, because by the time this game was over, the other game was well into the 8th inning. . . . Games 6 & 7 seemed less "exciting," simply because it seemed that the Sox had all of the momentum: Schilling pitched great in Game 6, and Lowe pitched a one-hitter through six innings in Game 7. Every time the Yankees made a move, the Red Sox made a bigger one in response. All of those moments are there, however, to relive in whatever fashion you choose--watch the complete games, skip around, whatever. . . .
The Setup: The games are all there in their entirety. However, half-inning chapter breaks make it very easy to negotiate your way through a whole bunch of baseball (Games 4 and 5 went forever. . .) in much less time than the original games took.
The Packaging: Beautiful. Hitting statistics, pitching stats, box scores, and inning-by-inning summaries make it easy to find a particular at-bat or half-inning (some of our memories are failing, so this feature is particularly helpful. . .). Trivia, attendance, weather info, umpires, quotes from players, pictures of memorabilia, and a host of other things are on the cover of each DVD, making it good reading material, as well. It's all there. All of it. If you need a piece of information regarding these games that is not on the cases, then you need very professional help. . .
The Bonus Features: Some of us love them, and this set includes one disc devoted to just "stuff," most importantly the 2005 Ring & Banner Ceremony, which was not included on any of the other World Series DVDs. Interviews, player bios/features, trip to the White House, celebrity interviews, post-game celebrations, etc. are all included. Complete postseason batting and pitching stats are on the inside of the case, also--Nice bonus. . . !
The Price: Can you beat it. . . ? MLB online was offering each game, but it would have ended up costing more than this set (which I bought for less than $80 at my local Bull Moose store) and would not have had any of the nice packaging offered on this set. I could have pictured really bare-bones discs and cases, but MLB and A&E did a tremendous job putting together a quality package for a very reasonable amount of money.
Bottom Line: If you are a fan of baseball and, in particular, a Red Sox fan, then this set is a virtual "must-have" for your collection. It is the first time that MLB has done such a project, and I hope it is successful. Who wouldn't like to have some past great World Series and playoff series to see in their entirety? This is an invaluable resource for future generations of Red Sox fans and for baseball fans in general--hopefully a trend has been started. The NESN DVD (Faith Rewarded) is a great summary, with some nice local insights and perspectives. The official MLB World Series DVD (one disc) is nice, too, if you want just a summary and a few highlights. Neither can compare to this set, though. Some of us want the whole enchilada, and this set provides it, with a nice salsa on the side. . . .
