The NFL's Greatest Games: The Ice Bowl Review

The NFL's Greatest Games: The Ice Bowl
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The ice bowl is the first football game I have clear memory of. This tape, which is very well done, sets s up the game by showing what happened the year before in the championship game in Dallas, and how the Cowboys were ready to avenge that loss. Also, juxtaposed nicely, are the story of the 1967 packers, in the final year of their glory under Vince Lombardi. The tape brings the voice of Ray Scott, longtime voice of the packers and the NFL before the corporate suits took over the broadcast booth with ex jocks. The the game itself is shown virtually in its entirity, with clever voiceover by Scott sounding very much .like it did that day. With the temperature being -16 below zero, the players and fans literally were trying to survive as well as win. This is the best of the NFL tapes that I have seen, perhaps because of the seminal importance of the game,or simply for nostalgic reasons. Either way, this is an excellent tape and a good bargain, considering that you are likely to re-watch a sports tape. And, listening to the voice of the great Ray Scott is a distinct pleasure.

The NFL's Greatest Games - '81 NFC Championship
Average Reviews:

NFL films has made an excellent tape which gives a nearly play by play recap (with accompanying actual CBS radio audio) of the 1981 NFC Championship at Candlestick Park in which the upstart San Francisco 49ers defeated "America's Team," the Dallas Cowboys 28-27. This game arguably was the birth of the San Francisco 49ers dynasty and the beginning of the demise of the Cowboys. The game itself was a tense struggle between two evenly matched teams until Joe Montana capped an 11 play, 89 yard final drive with the single most famous play in 49er history, the TD "Catch" to Dwight Clark...The Cowboys responded by threatening to score in the final minute of the game but the 49er defense stiffened and forced a fumble by Cowboy QB Danny White which sealed the game...what a great tape - a treasure for any 49er fan but a bane for any Cowboy fan!!!

I have watched all games from the set, here is what you get:
The video quality is great for games from 1985. The edits are minimal and appear to be related to cutting out any network related promos, or when they cut to the studio for highlights from other games. Also missing is the music. The NBC CBS and ABC music jingles are removed. Other than that though............... you get the complete network games with tv broadcasters, Summerall Madden, Dick Endberg, Frank Gifford, etc. There is some postgame stuff for the nfc championship and super bowl. Most games clock in between 2 and 2 1/2 hours, the super bowl is just under 3 hours. Outstanding! Also this is a 12 disc set, not 5 as this site advertises. these are the games
week 1 vs Tampa Bay
week 3 the thursday night game against Minnesota
week 4 the blowout of the Washington Redskins
week 5 at Tampa bay - close game
week 6 the revenge game against the San Francisco 49ers(my personal favorite)
week 7 the monday night game against Green Bay
week 11 the 44-0 game against the Dallas Cowboys
week 13 the monday night loss to Miami
week 16 the season ending game at Detroit
playoff win over the Giants
championship game win over the Rams
and the Super Bowl over the Patriots with post game ceremonies
I'm sure this set was priced to sell. I would have loved the other games from the season too, but I wont be nit picky. You get a lot here for your money. All Bears fans will be pleased with this. They could perhaps do another box set with the remaining games, super bowl shuffle, and Chicago Bears complete history, and America;s game! I will definately buy future releases of complete games from other nfl dynasties. But if you look closely, this set tells the story. The opening game, last gaem of the regular season, all monday night games, 1 game against each division opponent, The biggest games of the regular season, their only loss, their closest win of the season vs the bucs, and the entire postseason. FANTASTIC!
Someone please buy Sal Palantonio a copy of this set!

NFL Top 100: Nfl's Greatest Players Review

NFL Top 100: Nfl's Greatest Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, this is a terrific four-disc collection that no NFL fan should be without. The 100 greatest players are counted down, in order, with excellent film footage and commentary from a number of players, coaches, sports journalists, historians and "celebrity" fans like Dennis Miller and Burt Reynolds.
As an older fan--I'm over 60--I particularly enjoyed seeing the greats of my youth like Jim Brown, Dick Butkus, Joe Greene and Johnny Unitas "in action" again. No--I'm afraid that players like Jim Thorpe, Red Grange and Slingin' Sammy Baugh were even before my time--but their inclusion tells you that this list covers the entire history of the game, as it should.
I was also impressed with the fine booklet included in the package--a beautiful bonus for fans.
Of course the list inevitably creates debate amongst football fans--a player should be higher--or lower--the great players who are missing etc. In fact as I watched the list, I had a number of questions myself. For example, I would have placed Kellen Winslow and Alan Page much higher.
There are a number of current players on the list--Ed Reed, Randy Moss, Ladainian Tomlinson, Tom Brady, Ray Lewis, Tony Gonzalez and Peyton Manning. I don't dispute their greatness--I'm sure they will all be in the "Hall" someday. However, should they be included on this particular list if they are still playing ? If so, what about Troy Polamalu, Drew Brees, Charles Woodson and Brian Urlacher, to name a few other fabulous players who are still out there "doing their thing" ?
Finally I will throw out a few more names that did not make the "Top 100". So some fans like myself will wonder about :--Jim Taylor--Paul Hornung--Lynn Swann--Franco Harris--Ken Stabler--Eddie George--Drew Pearson--Russ Francis--Dave Casper--Mike Curtis--Frank Gifford--Len Dawson--Larry Wilson--Steve Largent--Jim Kelly--Jerome Bettis--Carl Eller--Isaac Bruce--Billy Sims--Tim Brown--Cortez Kennedy. The longer I sit here, the more names I will think of, but I have made my point. I am sure that any self-respecting fan could add to my list.
There is another question--different players have different roles on a football team. How can we really say who was the greatest between Jim Brown, Lawrence Taylor, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice ? Their positions were so different, although each was capable of changing a game--and often did !
Bottom line--despite my comments, this is a terrific collection that provides hours of memories for football fans, and a ton of "debate material" the next time you get together with your buddies for beer and hot wings ! Enjoy !

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006) Review

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006)
Average Reviews:

I love a good work of fiction but sometimes reality can be very entertaining. This series is well-made and so intense and passionate that it brought me to tears more than one time. Every episode is a unique road to the superbowl by the team who won it and told by 3 important actors of the team. The 1985 conquest of the Bears for example is told by Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary and Jim McMahon. The stories that leads to the big game are fascinating, touching and often surprising. I love the series so much that I was comtemplating buying the first DVDs on the market which focus on one particular team and all the superbowls they won. But now, I was happy to see that they compile everything in one package. The packaging is very well made, the 40 DVDs being separated in 4 eras (66-75)(76-85)(86-95)and (96-05), 10 discs by DVD. Also, an interesting 88 page book with every conquest by every team. On the DVDs you have also a bunch of interviews that we couldn't see on the NFL network. If you love the NFL this is a great work by NFL films and Steve Sabol and a great piece of history to possess. The only thing missing is the Colts Superbowl last year but the documentary is about the first 40 Superbowl so we can't have everything unfortunately.

NFL America's Game - The Super Bowl Champions - San Francisco 49ers Collection Review

NFL America's Game - The Super Bowl Champions - San Francisco 49ers Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've never seen any of the America's Game episodes then you are missing out. This is by far a very different NFL films product - much less of the frustrating super slow motion footage and more about the actual games themselves.
This particular product is a must-have for any 49ers fan. The 1981 DVD in particular is outstanding, but all 5 DVDs are of very high quality. One of the unique aspects of this set of DVDs is how they each compliment each other, and basically recap the franchise between the years 1979-1994. For example, the 1984 DVD picks up where the 1981 DVD left off, and talks about how the 49ers didn't make the playoffs in 1982 and lost in the NFC Championship game in '83.
The DVD also faithfully re-caps the Quarterback controversy of 1988, which brings me to the only bad thing I can say about this collection; the absence of Joe Montana. NFL films uses enough stock footage of previous Montana interviews to keep fans satisfied, but much like the fantastic Dennis Georgatos book Game Of My Life, Montana's absence is the only noticeable flaw, but a glaring one at that.
Is this enough to recommend against purchase? Of course not!! Even die-hard 49er (and NFL) fans will be reminded of some awesome highs and a few of the lows which they may have forgotten about.
My final example illustrates the in-depth nature of the DVDs: during the 1984 season San Fransisco went 18-1. Their one loss during the season? Week 7 against the Steelers. At the end of the game Pittsburgh was driving for the win, but San Fransisco was able to stop them on downs at the goaline, but on the 4th down play, Ronnie Lott was called for a penalty which, although later shown to be a bad call, gave Pittsburgh a fresh set of downs and helped them win the game. The DVD includes all of this footage, from the actual broadcast, but it doesn't unnecessarily dwell on mundane details. My point is that each DVD is packed with information, but they keep up a good pace to keep the audience entertained.

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles - 10 Greatest Games (2009) Review

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles - 10 Greatest Games (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First let me start off by saying that I am a New York Jets fan all the way. Bleed Green & white. However the Eagles are my second favorite team for 2 reasons. My aunt and uncle are Eagles fans, and I love Eagles fans because they are just as wild, and a lot of times wilder then Jets fans. Anyway this can't be a greater 10 game series because half of the games on here are actual classics. Here are the games.
1. Eagles vs Giants November 19th, 1978: Miracle at the Meadowlands( I don't need to say anything else)
2.Eagles vs Cowboys January 11th, 1981: The first championship game the Eagles won in the Super Bowl era which got them to the big dance for the first time.
3. Eagles vs Redskins September 17th 1989: Eagles rally at the last minute to score a game winning TD in a 42-37 shoot out
4. Eagles vs Redskins November 12th 1990: Buddy Ryan was quoted 5 days before the game saying " they will get a beating so severe that they will be carted off in body bags," and that's just what happened. The Eagles knocked out the Redskins from the start and scored 3 Defensive TD's when they won 28-14. in the process of the brutal beatdown the Eagles managed to take out 9 Redskins players. Including 2 QB's. It was so severe that Brian Mitchell who was the RB for The Redskins was put in at QB by the end of the game.
5. Eagles vs Lions December 30th 1995: The Eagles beatdown the Lions in the highest scoring game in post season history with the final score being 58-37. That was big, but the even greater part was that they only let Barry Sanders(the greatest and most elusive running back ever) gain only 40 yards rushing all game.
6. Eagles vs Steelers November 12th 2000: Even though the Eagles played terrible for most of the game they rallied back late in the 4th to send the game in to OT and then won it by a game winning FG to make the final score 26-23
7. Eagles vs Packers January 11th 2004: 4th and 26( Don't need to say anything else)
8. Eagles vs Cowboys December 28th 2008: This is a sure classic to Eagles fans and Cowboy haters because everything went right for the Eagles before this game because both the Bears and Bucs would lose to the Texans and Raiders. So all the Eagles needed to do was win and they were in, and that's just what they did. they demolished the Cowboys in a 44-6 thrashing making the Dallas Cowboys America's Choke.
9. Eagles vs Falcons January 23 2005: The Eagles get back to the big dance after beating down the Falcons in a 27-10 win.
10. Eagles vs Cowboys October 8th 2006: My personal favorite because it was T.O.'s first game back as a Cowboy and people were ready to heckle the hell out of him. the game went back and forth until Lito Sheppard sealed it with less than 30 seconds by intercepting a pass and returning it for a TD.
Overall this set has at least 5 classics that are definately worth viewing for a lot of fans unless they were a fan of the team on the losing end. I'm definately going to buy it when it comes out.

The NFL's Greatest Games - Super Bowl III (New York Jets vs. Baltimore Colts) (1969) Review

The NFL's Greatest Games - Super Bowl III (New York Jets vs. Baltimore Colts) (1969)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Number III was the one that truly made the Super Bowl the biggest game in American pro sports, thanks to the media coverage following Joe Namath's 'Guarantee' of an underdog Jets victory. It also proved that the youthful American Football League could contend with the veteran NFL on the playing field.
But the other team, the Baltimore Colts, had plenty of opportunities to take the game far away from their opponents. There's Tom Matte's then-record-setting 58-yard run that set up... an interception. There's a couple plays where Colts QB Earl Morrall didn't see a wide-open receiver to throw a scoring toss to, one of those missed opportunities ending in an interception. There were also the two missed Colts field-goal attempts. Baltimore basically lost on offensive miscues and mistakes, and the Jets took advantage of them at every opportunity. Baltimore wouldn't even score for nearly fifty-six minutes of regulation time. And the Jets, surprisingly, used a conservative ball-control offense to wear the Colts defense down.
Even thirty years later, Super Bowl III is, quite possibly, the biggest upset in American pro sports history.
'Late!
