Wildcats (1986) Review

I first saw this when I was a child. I'm 27 now and just bought the DVD. For years I've had the film on a crummy video cassette but now I can enjoy it fully. This is like fine wine. It only gets better with age.

Molly McGrath, a school coach is hooked into going to Central High, a school full of underachieving, smart mouth criminals and losers to teach Central's failing football team. Unfortunately their best quarter back LeVander has turned street criminal so the principal ( Nipsie Russell ) hopes McGrath is the new blood needed to win some games. Of course Molly is confronted by the team's hostility at first but when they notice she has a real talent for football and grew up on the sport, they start to respect her. Molly never backs down proving once again that anything a man can do a woman can do better. The story moves smoothly except for the boring plot line dealing with Molly's eldest daughter, constantly acting out to get attention. Also the big plot hole is how Molly managed to turn the Central Wildcats into the Dallas Cowboys without explanation. One minute they're the worst team in the district, the next thing we know they're winning the championship! Go figure. Since this is a comedy overlooking plot holes won't slow up the fun. The highlights are Trumaine ( Wesley Snipes ) who is so disgustingly funny you'll be shocked at some of the things he says. Cerullo's uh...talent ( if you call flatulence a talent ). Flatulence in films wasn't over done in 86' when this is made so it was funny then. It may not be funny to people ( including myself ) who are sick of flatulance being relied on for films of today. And my number one favorite...Finch! The four-hundred pound genius with an attitude! All the actors have chemistry with each other and keep the ball rolling. James Keach is funny as Molly's ex-husband who's constantly sticking his nose where it doesn't belong.
Wildcats has all the components of a great film: cute jocks, humor, a witty actress and all around good clean 80's fun. What amazes me about this is that it doesn't seem that dated even though its nineteen years old. Some 80's films lose their spark but Wildcats is funnier than ever. I never tire of the football sequences or the players' funny catch lines such as: " If they're the cougars, how come they got a goat? " " What are we b------- about? We got a dog dressed like a cat."
Wildcats is Goldie's best movie in my opinion. I liked Overboard but with this Goldie really came into her own. There are a lot of emerging actors from this film such as Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and not to mention the cute cameo from LL. Cool J. Also the man who plays Cerullo is a major hottie! And who can forget the cute little rap song the team does at the end? If you're into light humor or find yourself at home with nothing to do, Wildcats is the perfect movie to just throw in the DVD player and relax. There's no thinking required. The only thing you must have is a sense of humor and the need for two hours of fun-loving entertainment for the entire family ( despite a couple curse words ). Enjoy. And if you haven't seen it, BUY IT!
If you enjoy Wildcats you'll love other funny films of this genre:
Sunset Park
Hardball
The Bad News Bears
A League of their Own
All of these films are good but Wildcats is in a place all its own.

Kickboxer (1989) Review

Kickboxer (1989)

Jean-Claude Van Damme will never be confused for anything other than what he is: a martial arts actor whose acting abilities are less important than his high-kicking ones. This is not a bad thing either. He is probably one of the two or three best action stars now working, and his legions of fans appreciate his style. In KICKBOXER, he reveals in one movie the best and worst of what he is capable. He plays Sloan, an American fighter whose brother is crippled by the savagery of the Thai champion, Tong Po, played by Van Damme's real life friend Michel Quissi, who stars in many of his other films. What the viewer sees is your basic get-revenge-on-the-dude-who-hurt-my-brother movie.
Van Damme closes with s stirring victory over a very tough and, in his own way, a colorful foe. Van Damme's strengths include his good looks, athletic ability, martial arts expertise, and even some boog-a-looing disco dancing. What he adds to this is a sense to the audience of breathless expectation. By simply looking at him undergo the bone-breaking training imposed on him by his Wise Old Master, the viewer can just for that moment put himself on the screen, absorbing the same beating. Even in his first films, when he played the bad guy, the audience knew that any victory the hero achieved over him was dictated only by the script. In KICKBOXER, Van Damme begins what for him proves a winning trend: he needs a worthy opponent to make the movie resonate. In KICKBOXER, Michel Quissi, who is no Asian at all, puts on makeup to simulate the epicanthic eyefolds and shaves his head to produce one mean-looking man. One of the most effective uses of a heavy that I have ever seen in any martial arts film is directors Mark DiSalle and David Worth's decision to introduce Tong Po not by sight but by sound. Van Damme hears a strange pounding and when he investigates by following the noise, almost as if he were a human geiger counter, he sees Tong Po kicking a concrete pillar hard enough to shake dust. The latent fear in his eyes connects viscerally to the audience. This scene in which Van Damme shows hesitation is one of his best, but he rarely exhibits this less than heroic temperament in future films. The down side to KICKBOXER is generic to the genre. It is simply not possible for him to absorb such bone-crunching punishment and bounce up off the mat to fight on and win. But his ability to do so is probably part of the myth and mystique that marks such fight movies. Does anyone really want to peek into the magician's hat to see where the dove comes from?

Over the Top (1987) Review

Over the Top (1987)

Over the top is such an emotionally moving film. The music that runs throughout the entire movie just adds to the effect. If someone is looking for the most inspirational speech in the history of mankind, then look no further than the scene right before the final arm wrestling match between Hawk and Bull Harley. Stallone emotionally explains how he becomes like a machine, or more specifically a truck, by simply turning his hat backwards. I watch this scene every morning to keep me going. This movie did not have enough white guys with perms in it, though.

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp Review

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp

After being pushed back almost a year from it's original release date, "Dragon's Lair II: TimeWarp" FINALLY sees the light of day. The animation is flawless and is even better than the original arcade version was as far as smoothness and color use. I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. There are no annoying pauses in between the moves much like "Dragon's Lair" and "Space Ace". There's even a "Director's Cut" of the final sequence of scenes that can be played as part of the actual game. Finally for those of us that cannot afford to buy an arcade cabinet of our own, or track down all the necessary equipment (the right laserdisc player model and original laserdisc) to play on our PC's, we too can enjoy this faithful translation of an arcade classic in the comfort of our own homes! All in all the only bad thing was the loooong delay of a release date. Way to go Digital Leisure! Oh, and in case you're wondering I am using a 60 GB PS3 to play it and I have no firmware or hardware issues at all. AAA+++!!!

NHL Original 6: NY Rangers Stanley Cup Champions 1994 - DVD Review

Clearly 5 stars for the overall quality and packaging of this set (even includes Mark Messier Night as a bonus.) However, I take away a star for the games not being completely uncut (e.g., the end of Game 6 vs. Devils - the skirmish between Anderson & Nichols is edited out.) A relatively minor point perhaps since no game time is lost, but this is still annoying and totally unnecessary. Regardless, a nice and overdue DVD addition to any hockey fan's library--especially Rangers fans! Also, die-hard Ranger fans beware: some games are taken from the ESPN feeds, so no Sam & J.D. Although it is interesting to see and hear these games via a different lens and commentary, I was a bit disappointed in this production choice for some of these games.
