Jerry Maguire (1996) Review

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Well, I'm incredibly late to the Jerry Maguire party, but I'm glad I finally made it. I thought this was just a comedy, but I should have known better because laughs alone usually don't generate the kind of success this movie enjoyed. This is a wonderful, feel-good movie with a surprisingly effective emotional payoff. Tom Cruise is great, Cuba Gooding, Jr., steals every scene he's in, and that Renee Zellweger is nothing short of perfect. They even threw in a clip of McGarrett on Hawaii Five-O and sent me away with Bob Dylan singing over the credits - in my book, that's going above and beyond the call of duty. And I never tire of seeing someone break away from the cynicism of big business and actually put some heart back into an increasingly heartless way of life.
Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is, of course, a bigshot sports agent who has it all - then loses it all. For some inexplicable reason, he develops a conscience late one night, puts together this huge "mission statement" all about reducing the number of clients and giving those remaining the genuine personal touch, and sends it to everyone in the company. With a schlep of a boss like Bob Sugar (the always annoying Jay Mohr), his days with the company are, not surprisingly, numbered. He vows to start his own company, desperately trying to hold on to the clients he has been representing - but all he ends up taking with him are outrageous Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) and Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), an accountant who was truly inspired by what he had written. It doesn't seem like much, but he really has all he will ever need - he just doesn't realize it until the end of the movie.
Life on his own is quite a struggle, especially after he breaks up with his vicious fiancée (Kelly Preston), and I know it must be truly demoralizing to be defeated time and time again by Jay Mohr. Rod Tidwell, a great player who doesn't get the notice (or money) he thinks he deserves, stays loyal to him, though, for rather inexplicable reasons - even after Maguire fails to get him the kind of big money he is looking for in a new contract. Dorothy also stays with him, and Maguire grows increasingly close to her and her little boy Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki). There's love in the air, and Maguire's famous problem with emotional intimacy makes what should be the simplest thing in the world immensely complicated. We see a lot of Maguire at his worst - double-crossed, drunk, beaten up, wallowing in self-pity. He never gives up, though, and that's what's important. I find it a little problematic that he did not apply the principles of his "mission statement" to the way he lived his life, but - in his defense - guys tend to be pretty dense about this kind of thing (and would that we all had a Dorothy to help us see the light).
There's a wonderful cast on display here, with uncommonly meaningful secondary characters: there's little Ray, of course, but Dorothy's bitter yet loving sister Laurel (Bonnie Hunt) and Rod Tidwell's wife Marcee (Regina King) really do lay claim to a commanding presence in the story. You can also make a little game of spotting all of the sports personalities that make cameos (usually silent ones, thankfully) in the film.
This isn't a comedy; it's a serious story that just happens to feature a lot of laughs. It's a commentary on the depersonalization of business, a complicated yet wonderfully sweet love story, and a movie with a surprisingly big heart. And I love Renee Zellweger. As far as I'm concerned, she - not Tom Cruise - was the star of this film.

This is a great movie for any Nascar fan. Make sure you totally disregard the "editorial review"
"With Days of Thunder, director Tony Scott tried to do for the Indy 500 what he did for the U.S. Air Force with Top Gun."
Days of Thunder tried to do for the DAYTONA 500, what he did for the US NAVY in Top Gun, Anyone who can't get that right, should not be reviewing movies..

Airborne (1993) Review

Good: Well, I had to give this movie a 5 because anyone who likes Seth Green and Jack Black today, really need to see this movie. You'll see both of them in early greatness.
It's good to see the supporting roles moving on to become way more well known than any of the stars in these older films. You'll see some supporting roles in this film for years to come, such as Seth's parents and the girl he tries to impress. You'll have to watch it to see who I'm talking about.
Bad: It IS a bit dated and for lack of a better word, cheezy, (hangs head low) but it's funny and nostalgic.
Have fun watching.

As has been stated by this reviewer before, if you're looking for a negative review, about anything produced by NFL Films, from me, you are going to be looking for a long time. I am biased.
This 3-disc set is classic NFL footage. There are highlights from the 60s&70s, spiked with episodes of the "Lost Treasures" series. As opposed to Volumes 1-3 of this series, Volumes 4-6 do not feature "commentary" options, where you play a program and listen to Steve Sabol, of NFL Films, spin stories about what you are looking at. You know, I kind of miss that.
Anyway ... this three-volume set includes the incredible "Autumn Ritual" video from the 1980s. That alone makes the buy worthwhile.
Disc 04
Big Game America (Jim Marshall & Don Meredith)
Pro Football -- Pottstown, Pa.
Lost Treasures of NFL Films: Pottstown Revisted

Disc 05
More than a Game (Joe Kapp/Dick Butkus/Lou Saban/Willie Davis)
The Hunters (Walt Garrison/Carl Eller/Ben Davidson)
Autumn Ritual
Lost Treasures of NFL Films: The Me Decade
Disc 06
Eyeball to Eyeball
The Young, the Old, and the Bold (Quarterbacks)
Lombardi
Lost Treasures of NFL Films: Six Days to Sunday (Hank Stram/1976 Saints)
Just push play !!

NFL Greatest Games Series - 1985 Chicago Bears (2007) Review

NFL Greatest Games Series - 1985 Chicago Bears (2007)

I have watched all games from the set, here is what you get:
The video quality is great for games from 1985. The edits are minimal and appear to be related to cutting out any network related promos, or when they cut to the studio for highlights from other games. Also missing is the music. The NBC CBS and ABC music jingles are removed. Other than that though............... you get the complete network games with tv broadcasters, Summerall Madden, Dick Endberg, Frank Gifford, etc. There is some postgame stuff for the nfc championship and super bowl. Most games clock in between 2 and 2 1/2 hours, the super bowl is just under 3 hours. Outstanding! Also this is a 12 disc set, not 5 as this site advertises. these are the games
week 1 vs Tampa Bay
week 3 the thursday night game against Minnesota
week 4 the blowout of the Washington Redskins
week 5 at Tampa bay - close game
week 6 the revenge game against the San Francisco 49ers(my personal favorite)
week 7 the monday night game against Green Bay
week 11 the 44-0 game against the Dallas Cowboys
week 13 the monday night loss to Miami
week 16 the season ending game at Detroit
playoff win over the Giants
championship game win over the Rams
and the Super Bowl over the Patriots with post game ceremonies
I'm sure this set was priced to sell. I would have loved the other games from the season too, but I wont be nit picky. You get a lot here for your money. All Bears fans will be pleased with this. They could perhaps do another box set with the remaining games, super bowl shuffle, and Chicago Bears complete history, and America;s game! I will definately buy future releases of complete games from other nfl dynasties. But if you look closely, this set tells the story. The opening game, last gaem of the regular season, all monday night games, 1 game against each division opponent, The biggest games of the regular season, their only loss, their closest win of the season vs the bucs, and the entire postseason. FANTASTIC!
Someone please buy Sal Palantonio a copy of this set!

Jem - The Complete 1st & 2nd Seasons (1985) Review

Jem - The Complete 1st and 2nd Seasons (1985)
Average Reviews:

Like most cartoons of the 80's, JEM may have had an agenda of commercialism behind it. But that in no way should overshadow the fact that this cartoon aspired to be more than what it seemed at the superficial level. JEM made a serious effort to not only capture the attention of girls ages 5-13(through a mixture of catchy 1 minute bubblegum pop tunes and a lucrative collectors doll market), but to actually distinguish itself as something special in the annals of animation lore.As a young comic-book obsessed, introverted boy in the 80's, JEM first managed to catch my attention as part of an animation block of Saturday morning programming along with Bigfoot and the Monster Machines, and the Inhumanoids. As a boy and die-hard comic freak, I tuned in for the Inhumanoids naturally. But there was something about JEM that automatically captured my attention. Perhaps it was the "super-hero" aspect of the show. Perhaps it was the bevy of gorgeous animated babes. Whatever it was,I was instantly hooked.I felt kind of weird being a male JEM fan,but I consoled myself with the fact that I only gave the cartoon my patronage, and NOT the dolls! But I digress. GOD BLESS RHINO!!!! Season 1+2 are here in all thier big-haired glory! Enjoy JEM from her humble origins to her maturity as a pop-goddess and role model for kids of all ages and genders! This is a solid essential for children of the 80's,or any fan of quality animation with quirky storytelling, memorable characters, and (of course) those awesome mini pop anthems that gave the show it's aura of individuality. Good for young children,as it is replete with wholesome values and the triumph of purity and right over the forces of malicious mischief.(By the way:the MISFITS ROCK!!!) The animation itself is a bit rocky at times and primitive by today's manga-obsessed purists. But this can easily be forgiven due to the show's out-and-out ability to enthrall and stand the test of time despite its dated look and feel. HEY RHINO:CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASONS 3-4!!! I feel those are the best episodes, as the show really matured story-wise,and even more unforgettable characters were introduced! Hope this was helpful!

Jem and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series Review

Jem and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What makes this cartoon so different from the many others is the intricacy of the series, the show uses the characters as the central driving point in contrast to the majority of other cartoons that simply use them as a vehicle for mindless action. The reason for this is most likely the fact that the show was aimed at girls and as such random combat isn't appealing however, characters , relationships, and inner conflicts are. Jem features episodes that are both fun and exciting examples of such are "The Battle of the Bands", "One Jem to Many", and "The Fan" while there are also episodes that cause the show to transcend your everyday cartoon such as "Scandal", "Father's Day", "Riot's Hope", "A Father Should Be", and of course the wonderful back story episode "Out of the Past". The more powerful episodes feature complex themes such as the death of a parent, personal secrets, conflict among friends, and family strife. It's the mix of fun and depth that really make this such a wonderful show to watch, especially as an adult when you can really appreciate the themes.
Jem features three music videos spaced evenly throughout each episode breaking up the action nicely. The 80's songs are catchy and the videos fun. The show features talented voice over artists like Britta Phillips (singing voice of Jem), Samantha Newark (Voice of Jem/Jerrica), and Charlie Adler (Eric Raymond). Most characters are well thought out with real depth to their personality that is expanded upon throughout the series with well written and delivered dialog. The basic plots usually involve the rival band the Misfits that attempt to thwart Jem's plans out of jealously or Eric Raymond's goal of regaining control of Jerrica's business. Eric Raymond is noteworthy as a main antagonist as he uses manipulation, money, and thugs instead of "magical powerss" like most other cartoon villains, this brings a sense of reality that you don't often receive in a cartoon. Near the end of the series Eric Raymond becomes so ruthless in his ways that it reaches a point of utter cruelty you forget you are watching a children's cartoon. The show features positive messages throughout involving friendship, family, loyalty, and generally doing right, these values are in stark contrast to modern cartoons which feature no real consequences or purpose for the adventures that occur and one dimensional good characters with no flaws. Jerrica Benton(Jem) runs a foster home for girls that is funded entirely by her music company and it's primary act Jem and the Holograms, this noble undertaking gives real consequence to the struggles that occur and provides a sense of realism to the show. The struggles often involve Jerrica potentially losing her business which in turn would destroy her charity work, while at the same time she deals with an emotionally draining love triangle due to her dual identity as Jem that involves her boyfriend Rio.
While Jem has a few bad episodes, usually featuring forced or unoriginal stories, most are lighthearted and fun. If you have a cynical attitude such that you can't stomach positives messages without finding them "campy" or if you prefer to nitpick 1980's children's cartoons for plot holes (ex. why aren't the villains in jail for assault) then you won't likely enjoy this show and you should find the nearest theater showing "Transformers 5". Jem has wonderful characters, catchy 80's songs, and an interesting premise. A great deal of effort was put into character development allowing the viewer to get absorbed into the series following the struggles of the characters until the very end. You might find yourself enjoying a lighthearted episode only to be saddened by an unexpectedly emotional one that follows. Jem isn't political, sexual, violent, or negative but is able to be entertaining none the less. The writers of the show push Jem beyond your normal children's cartoon making it quite emotionally and thematically complex and worth watching from beginning to end.
Shout! Factory put a great of effort into the quality of the set with wonderful artwork, bonus features, and attention to detail such as the multicolored DVDs that look like records. The set is a perfect addition to any collection of quality TV shows.
