Mike Swain's Judo (1990) Review

Mike Swain's Judo (1990)
Average Reviews:

I have purchased this DVD and found it 25% useful. Why 25%? Well the rest of the DVD seem to have no sound (i.e. both the replaced and original order). I have notified Black Belt as well as Amazon of this problem and hopefully they will address this issue ASAP as it is frustrating and disappointing to say the least. However, from what I have previewed so far (with sound) is quite good and very useful for the budding judoka. I am crossing my fingers to preview a working version of this DVD (2nd replacement) and provide some positive feedback.

JKA Shotokan Karate The Kawasoe Way Part 2 Heian Nidan, Yondan & Godan (Tsunami) Review

JKA Shotokan Karate The Kawasoe Way Part 2 Heian Nidan, Yondan and Godan (Tsunami)
Average Reviews:

I purchased all four videos in this series three years ago. I continue to use these videos and I have learned a lot from them! They contain a lot more than just kata, but the kata are the best part. Also contained on the tapes are warmup exercises, basic technique, bag work and some sparing. When combined with the use of the "Best Karate" books (volumes 5,6,7,8), the learning of new Kata is relatively easy. The kata are demonstrated once from the front view, in half speed, then a second time at full speed from the front view and then full speed from the side view.
The best "selling point" of these videos, is the value.
Volume 1 contains two kata (and a lot of basic technique.)
Volume 2 contains four kata.
Volume 3 contains two kata.
Volume 4 contains four kata.
I wish Instructor Kawasoe would produce videos of some of the black belt katas like Sochin, Unsu, Gojushiho Sho & Kanku Sho.
In summary, if you are looking for help to learn Shotokan kata, I recommend you buy these videos.

Comprehensive Applications of Shaolin Chin Na 2 Review

Comprehensive Applications of Shaolin Chin Na 2
Average Reviews:

This video does exactly what it says . It shows one a number of techniques and follows the supporting manual "Comprehensive Applications of Shaoling Chin Na" . The techniques are done smoothly and proficiently "well done" Dr. Yang. All in all a 1st rate production , some may complain that the technique are not shown often enough , only three times , but we all have rewind buttons , then some may complain they are shown too frequently but in different applications for different attacks (can't please everyone) Dr Yang does show many of the same techniques but each time they've got a slightly different twist (no pun intended)and it's useful to see the variation .
What I noticed different in this video from others of the genre was the lack of tape space used for superflous fluff , they didn't waste a lot of time or space , got right down to it no gratuitious advertising or flashy intermissions between techniques , good job. A wealth of information on this tape , will be using it extensively , much to learn , gain.

Last One Standing: The Complete First Season Review

Last One Standing: The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit, what first drew me into the show was the super-hyped advertisement of a few extremely fit,(and one particular, not to beat around the bush, tall, dark haired, gorgeous British guy), sporting tribal wear, fighting passionately, raw, in all sorts of exotic landscapes and cultures, all set to the infectious, adrenaline infused beat of Saliva's "Ladies and Gentlemen." Blood Stained Love Story
When I started watching, it was all that, but so, so much more. That show had me so inspired and pumped, I was in the best shape of my life from the first episode to well after the last. As for the six very unique young men, they were real, extremely likable characters that drew you in each on their own, you root for them all. Okay, I lied there, I never thought Corey belonged in the show, in fact I insulted him a lot through my t.v., and I adored Rajko above them all. But five amazing characters out of six, you can't get better than that, and I've watched a lot of reality shows! Don't get me started on the cultures, the connections they made, the injuries, or the mental, physical, and spiritual highs and lows they all faced.
I have searched for other shows like this one, and none has ever come close to Last One Standing.
From day one, I spouted this show to every single person I knew like I was getting paid for marketing, and I definitely recommend it to you.

Jun Fan / Jeet Kune Do Trapping Skills Part 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A long time ago, I purchased Steve Grody's JKD Trapping Hand series on VHS tape. Since then, I've loaned them out to friends, and eventually lost them. This is the same series he did back in the early 90's, but now its on DVD. This is absolutely excellent material, and I still refer to it. Hopefully the other video series' he's done will be coming out on DVD soon as well!
For those who aren't familiar with this, he had a 4 volume series on JKD trapping. This is Volume 1 in that series. The entire series goes through the various traps that are used by Wing Chun, but within the context of the JKD curriculum.

STREET BLOOD, KNIFE FIGHTING SELF-DEFENSE SYSTEM, Starring Master of the Blade JAMES WEBB Learn How to use a Knife to Defend Yourself Secret Techniques Protect your loved ones Complete Home Study Course
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased several other DVD's covering this topic, and James Webb's is the only one who conveys the information in a very simple, practical down to earth way. He comes across as an easy going surfer dude from California kind of guy, that you would love to just hang out with, yet obviously has a very long and varied self defense back ground, and knows what he is talking about. According to statements made during the DVD, he has not only been involved in knife encounters, which he says he has the scars to prove, but has served in the military, and trains the military. Too many so called knife experts have never seen real fight time, only pretend practice, so some (a lot) of their fancy, frilly moves are just that, things that you would never do in a real life situation. James Webb shoots them all down, and shows you why they wont work, and practical methods that will work. But the thing I enjoyed hearing the most, as he comments to it throughout the DVD, is first off, try not to get into a situation where you would need to use a knife, and to try to evade, distract and make a get away if at all possible. He also covers all degrees of force, from perhaps only trying to do just enough to remove you from the situation, to final lethal force. Knife fight wounds are very, very nasty brutal things; just look them up on the internet. This is something you do not want to happen to you, unless there is no choice given you. Put more practice and effort into being aware of your surroundings, and not getting yourself in the situation in the first place. I rate this video as a must see, it could save your life, or the lives of your loved ones. A+. Thank you James !

Malay Fighting Arts(c) - Mano Insayo (Hand Drills) Review

Malay Fighting Arts(c) - Mano Insayo (Hand Drills)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product really has me torn. On the one hand, I realize that people have 'aha' moments when their art fits together in their mind and it is nice that someone puts those thoughts on video to benefit others. On the other hand, the advertising feels like a bit misleading.
The ad I saw for this only said Malay martial arts, and had a quote from Bob Orlando. I thought to myself 'I should get this, even sight unseen, because there's not a lot out there about Malay martial arts'. After viewing this video, there still isn't.
What he covers is basic hubud-lubud from Filipino arts. There is little here that one can't find elsewhere and, I'm sorry to say, the little that one might consider 'new' is an easy extrapolation. I would have been happy even with a unique application of the basic drills.
At one point he says "I don't think anyone else has ever put this on video" and I think, 'I have: Dan Inosanto, Paul Vunak, and Steve Grody, among others'.
He does this bit about the exercise not being called hubud-lubud, and that it's just a name. Whatever the veracity of this argument, he's still showing the same stuff.
He also does some things that I think are wrong, but to each his own. I would have found a discussion of stylistic differences interesting, but there were no explanations as to why they do things the way they do to even come to your own conclusions.
The production value is middling. At times, there's a child and someone else in the background. He does perform in front of a white area. A better production would have the performers fill the frame more. All that being said, while these things are noticeable, you can still hear and see the performers.
I suppose this video has some value for beginners. But truthfully, I find Steve Grody's videos are better.

Okinawa Kobudo Bo Fighting Vol. I Review

Okinawa Kobudo Bo Fighting Vol. I

With little to no martial arts experience (let alone weapon experience) I bought this DVD because I was drawn to the weapon. Within 3 days of watching the basics, I felt ready to start practicing the kata shown in this tape. Mr. Alexander breaks things down very systematically and cuts no corners. The descriptions of basic attacks and blocks are clear and precise. I've already ordered vol. II because this volume made me feel extremely confident in the way I handle the Bo, even as a rookie.

First off. This comes as a DVD-R not a pressed DVD, so incompatibility might occur on some DVD Players.
That being said, this is DVD rip of a VHS master. It's ok, it's basically the fundamental of Wing Chun. Not very good in the details. No chapter stops. I believe it's only 30 minutes long.
I would say that the cost and quality exceeds the value of this DVD.

Mike Swain Ne-Waza Judo Groundfighting Review

Mike Swain Ne-Waza Judo Groundfighting
Average Reviews:

This DVD develops a very coherent approach to NE-Waza . Mike Swain presents a logical progression of attacks, from standing to ground, fighting off one's back , attacking UKE's back and some very nice arm-lock entries.
The simplicity of presentation is first class and most of the moves are interlinked one way or another.
This tape doesn't have the clutter of other Judo or JiuJitsu tapes but presents each move correctly, explaining the finer points of each move so they really can be applied in randori or competion. The only thing thats missing is perhaps some competitive examples.

Krav Maga: Basic Combatives Review

Krav Maga: Basic Combatives
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD contains the basic techniques of Krav maga system. The techniques include attacks with hands (mostly punches with closed fist, but also hammer punches), elbows, knees and feet. There are some counterattacks and defences also included. At the beginning of the film they talk about angles of attack, target areas and stance & movement. As a DVD extra, they present focus mitt combinations to utilize in your training (they mention that they will produce an entire film on the subject in the future).
It is worth mentioning that they don't teach, or even mention the correct falling technique at all. Also, I think they should have taught also palm strikes, but for some reason they were left out. As palm strike is almost as effective as punch with a closed fist, but much more safe for your own hand, it should be included in everyones' arsenal. When instructing kicking techniques, they mention casually that you can kick also to the head. I think that they should have warned against that, because in real life, kicking above your own waist is considered risky, and generally not advisable.
The presentation of techniques varies from fair to excellent, the average being of good quality. In some techniques I learned some nuances I had not grasped in my Krav maga classes. Each technique opens up with a dramatized scene in which the technique is used. After that they present the technique at full speed, and after that in slow motion, and finally in learning stages. For some reason, they have chosen not to use slow motion of a full speed presentation of technique. Rather, the person presenting the technique is moving in slow motion, according to the instructions of off-screen narrator. This makes somewhat amateurish impression of the production.
Speaking of production, it is fairly OK. The film is shot with only one camera, but for the most part, it is shooting at the right spot. The techniques are presented in a studio against a black screen, but the dramatized scenes are shot in loading docks, restaurants, parking lots and so on. They use two narrators who take turns with narrating the techniques. The other narrator is International Krav maga federation head instructor Eyal Yanilov, and the other is U.S. chief instructor Darren Levine. Yanilov does not speak very good English, so from time to time it is hard to grasp what he is saying. Otherwise the production is good, and it's easy to understand the techniques.
As a Krav maga practitioner myself, I like the system. In this film, they have succeeded in presenting the basic techniques very well. There are some shortcomings, though, that reduce one star from the rating of this film.
Run time: 1:29
