Hardcastle and McCormick - The Complete First Season (1983) Review

Hardcastle and McCormick - The Complete First Season (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the fall of 1983, TV producing mogul Stephen J. Cannell and ABC premiered this slam-bang, action-comedy series featuring Brian Keith as the gruff, retired Judge Milton C. (Hardcase) Hardcastle and Daniel Hugh-Kelly as his wisecracking parolee, the fast-driving ex-con, Mark (Skids) McCormick.
THE PREMISE:
For three TV seasons, this unusual crime-fighting duo combined the judge's significant wealth, extensive law enforcement contacts, and his shotgun with ex-racing star McCormick's driving expertise to chase down the bad guys inhabiting the Los Angeles area.
THE SERIES (A SUMMARY):
In the pilot episode entitled "Rolling Thunder," the 66-year old Judge Hardcastle (a former cop), known by his defendants as the fearsome 'Hardcase' who showed them little or no mercy, has now just retired from the bench.
Immediately thereafter, he intends to hunt the 200+ lowlifes who somehow escaped his court over the years on legal technicalities and are presumably still pursuing criminal activities (for which he could finally send them to prison for). It is soon established that Hardcastle's program of enlisting paroled ex-cons as his associates in his war on crime has had at best mixed results so far.
Enter former racing star Mark McCormick, age 29-30, a former Hardcastle defendant now on parole for grand theft for stealing his own car (from an ex-girlfriend). Mark has been enlisted by an old friend and car designer, Flip Johnson, to test-drive the red hot Cody Coyote sports car for ruthless industrialist Martin Cody (a co-owner of the Coyote with Johnson).
Shortly thereafter, Cody has Johnson killed to obtain full ownership of the Coyote. To help Johnson's daughter obtain proof of her father's murder, Mark steals the Coyote from the villain's warehouse, but quickly winds up back in jail and becomes Hardcastle's last defendant before entering retirement.
Seizing the perfect opportunity, Hardcastle offers Mark a shot at immediate redemption: either work indefinitely for the judge on his mission to bust the bad guys on his Top 200 list, or get a second all-expenses paid trip to San Quentin prison. Mark reluctantly takes the deal after learning their first case is taking down Martin Cody, whom they manage to capture in a 'sting' operation by offering the Coyote as elusive bait. Mark then receives the Coyote as a gift from Johnson's daughter for helping bring Cody to justice.
After the first several episodes, Hardcastle's 'hit list' (presumably, this concept would provide enough villains for syndication purposes) was dropped in favor of focusing on average TV-style criminals as they generally encountered the judge and McCormick by chance.
By the spring of 1986 (the end of Season Three), McCormick's parole has been completed. As the last episode concludes, Hardcastle loses (perhaps deliberately) a scrimmage basketball game, which means he will pay for his friend's law school tuition. "Now, you're cooking." the Judge tells him. Appropriately enough, the last episode was entitled "A Chip off the ol' Milt." In those three years, a reformed Mark's begrudging respect for the judge has developed into where Hardcastle has become the caring father he never really had, and Mark has essentially matured into his surrogate son.
TWENTY YEARS LATER:
On its surface, 'Hardcastle & McCormick' was not by any means extraordinary TV viewing for its time, as its plots and most of its guest characters tended to be generic and and could even be considered somewhat forgettable for the extensive 'cops and robbers' genre.
Instead, the crux of why this series endures is really the bickering comedic chemistry between stars Brian Keith and Daniel Hugh-Kelly. It is this unique sparring partnership that makes this show still so much fun to watch twenty years later, as Keith and Hugh-Kelly brought vibrant life to a somewhat ordinary series that combined elements of other similar genre shows such as 'Magnum P.I.', 'Knight Rider', and 'The Rockford Files.' If this show had been cast differently, the charm and fun of 'Hardcastle & McCormick' would likely have been gone.
OVERALL RATING:
The 66 or 67 episodes were at least consistently entertaining enough to merit between 3 and 5 stars each. The terrific chemistry of stars Brian Keith and Daniel Hugh-Kelly, however, deserves a 5+! Hence, our rating is based on what makes this show worth watching over and over again.
At long last, fans will be rewarded with the late 2006 release of the show's first season. Hopefully, a new generation will soon discover and enjoy Hardcastle & McCormick's banter, as they chase after crooks through the streets of L.A. If so, we can likely expect to see Seasons Two and Three cruise into stores in the near future. We're counting on it.

Full House provides hours of enjoyment for my children, both boys and girls. Best of all, there is no bad language, sexual misconduct, drinking, drugs, disrespect, or general bad behavior of any kind. It is great for the whole family. What more can you ask for?

Last One Standing: The Complete First Season Review

Last One Standing: The Complete First Season

I have to admit, what first drew me into the show was the super-hyped advertisement of a few extremely fit,(and one particular, not to beat around the bush, tall, dark haired, gorgeous British guy), sporting tribal wear, fighting passionately, raw, in all sorts of exotic landscapes and cultures, all set to the infectious, adrenaline infused beat of Saliva's "Ladies and Gentlemen." Blood Stained Love Story
When I started watching, it was all that, but so, so much more. That show had me so inspired and pumped, I was in the best shape of my life from the first episode to well after the last. As for the six very unique young men, they were real, extremely likable characters that drew you in each on their own, you root for them all. Okay, I lied there, I never thought Corey belonged in the show, in fact I insulted him a lot through my t.v., and I adored Rajko above them all. But five amazing characters out of six, you can't get better than that, and I've watched a lot of reality shows! Don't get me started on the cultures, the connections they made, the injuries, or the mental, physical, and spiritual highs and lows they all faced.
I have searched for other shows like this one, and none has ever come close to Last One Standing.
From day one, I spouted this show to every single person I knew like I was getting paid for marketing, and I definitely recommend it to you.

Long Way Down: Complete TV Series (2008) Review

Long Way Down: Complete TV Series (2008)

As I knew I would, I liked this extended version of LWD better than the shorter one. As many of the reviewers have said, the very tight schedule they had to follow towards the beginning of the trip diminished the enjoyability of it a little, but not enough to dampen my overall enthusiasm for the series. I followed their voyage as they were making it through the BBC website, which was fantastic! Seeing this just made me feel like I was on the trip with Ewan and Charlie. I enjoyed LWD just as much as LWR, but for different reasons. They were more of a cohesive team in this one, even though there was some tension.
In that vein, the addition of Eve into the trip was a major contributor to that tension. I'm a woman, so rest assured this doesn't stem from a "boy's own" attitude. I just thought that Eve should not have inserted herself into the trip. She put Ewan in a very tough position, because you HAVE to support your wife publicly. That's just the way it works. So, she put Ewan in the position of having to broach the subject to a bunch of friends (especially Charley), who were hoping to have another adventurous /male-bonding kind of trip. If Eve wants to join Ewan on trip, she can do that anytime. She doesn't need to be a part of these major outings. I'm glad her screen time was rather abbreviated, and I hope she doesn't insist on being a part of Long Way Up, should they actually do that trip. I prefer the strictly male, fun-loving, boy's bonding kind of trip sans any wives.
As mentioned before, the beginning of trip was so rushed, and the guys so tired, that tensions and emotions bubbled over. That's understandable. Traveling of any kind can be tiring, but covering those kinds of miles on a motorcycle has to be just exhausting. Despite that, there were some really fun, enjoyable moments from Scotland to Libya. One is definitely the Moto Guzi factory. It's a hoot to see how enthusiactic Ewan is with the more comfortable seat on the classic bike! A very moving time is their visit to the CHAS house in Scotland. The people they encountered in this first part of the trip, the scenery, and the moments shared between friends starting a major adventure together more than make up for any tensions.
The rest of the voyage through the African continent is really engaging. It's fascinating to watch as the terrain, the people, and the cultures change almost day by day. I had no idea that Ethiopia is so green and beautiful! Most of us only remember the drought-stricken images we saw during the 1980s. It seems to be just a fabulous country, with wonderfully warm people. It's also a joy to see Ewan's rapport with the children he encounters. He is well-known for his love and compassion for children, and you can see that children just adore him.
One thing I would change is to add more footage that involves the support crew - especially Russ and David. I really enjoy seeing the dynamics of the relationships with the whole team. There was more of that in LWR than in this one. A classic support crew moment in LWD is when Dai Jones "loses" his passport. It's hilarious!
Some LWR fans felt letdown by this series, but I think that's mainly because they were hoping for LWR 2. This was a completely different trip - with different requirements, different cultures, different dynamics, different terrain, and different desires on the part of the participants. It was no less enjoyable for those differences. I wouldn't want to watch a replicated journed to LWR in just a different setting. It's entertaining BECAUSE of the differences. If you enjoy learning about different cultures and places that most of us will probably never get to see firsthand - all from the perspective of very likable, though very human, motorcycle enthusiasts - then you will enjoy LWD!!!

Top Gear 10: The Complete Season 10 (2009) Review

Top Gear 10: The Complete Season 10 (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The product description and the other reviews give a good breakdown of why you should like Top Gear- a trio of insane presenters who'd be as at home in a sitcom as they are behind the wheel of the supercars they love.
I'll stick with the DVD itself, which is nice to have but has a few flaws.
The first flaw is that the contents aren't perfectly uncut. Most of the "news" segments that featured in eight of the ten episodes of Season 10 are missing- only two are included. Some of the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segments are also missing- specifically, rugby star Lawrence Dallagio, Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders, and comedian Keith Allen. The back of the box says, in tiny print, "For clearance reasons certain edits have been made." Presumably, to save license payments to certain carmakers and celebrities, they dropped less memorable and more Brit-centric material. However, so far as I can tell these are the only cuts; there is ample material remaining that wasn't present on the BBC America broadcasts. (And the Star in a Car bits retained include Simon Cowell and David (Doctor Who) Tennant, and the two News segments retained are pure comedy gold... so it's not a total loss.)
Other cuts include: a very short attempt to do the Cool Wall (Season 10 was shot right after a studio fire destroyed the Cool Wall and other props); the in-studio conclusion of the Silverstone Britcar race; the Stig speed-testing the Vauxhall VXR8; and other bits and pieces here and there that I can't verify based on secondhand info, not having access to the original BBC versions.
The second flaw is that there's really not much in this three-disk set besides the episodes. There's no outtakes reel. There's no information text, background on the cast, or even optional trailers. (Each disk does have auto-playing trailers for other BBC DVD sets, which you can't play voluntarily after you get to the main menu.) There's no alternate language subtitles or dub- this is strictly an English-language release for what the BBC apparently believes is a one-language-if-that-many United States. Granted, there are English subtitles, but that's pretty much the only feature.
The final flaw is minor indeed; a dearth of track skip points. The credits (front and back) are NOT separate tracks; skip the opening credits and you also skip the opening film bit, and you can't skip to the end credits, period. None of the segments has skip points partway through, so you can't queue up anywhere close to a specific point in the film- you have to start at the beginning and fast-forward through.
These minor imperfections rob Top Gear 10 of what, otherwise, should be a well-deserved fifth star. Next time, BBC, when the package says "Complete Xth Season," please give us the complete season...
... but even if you don't, I'll still buy it. Now give us 1-9 and 11-12, please.

Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XV (The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy / The Girl in Lovers Lane / Zombie Nightmare / Racket Girls) (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume XV from Shout! Factory will include two Joel hosted episodes and two Mike hosted episodes, all from the Comedy Channel/Comedy Central period of the show.
102- THE ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY (with short: COMMANDO CODY AND THE RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON Pt. 1)
La Momia azteca contra el robot humano was made in Mexico and was released in the US in 1959. From the grade Z costumes, acting and special effects to the mediocre dubbing, this film is perfect fodder for MST3K. If you've always wanted to see a poorly costumed mummy battle a cardboard box style robot, this is your film. This episode also features the beginning of Radar Men From The Moon, which was one of the best things about Season One MST3K. Hilarious!
509- THE GIRL IN LOVER'S LANE
This 1959 black-and-white film features Joyce Meadows and a very young Jack Elam. The film is a hackneyed story about troubled teens from broken and problem homes, but the acting is not actually that bad and it's engaging enough to really irk you when you get to the incredibly depressing outcome of this film. Even the final sketch of the show focuses on the noxious ending of the film. Still, if you focus on the jokes from the MST3K crew then you can get through it and the mostly one-dimensional and unimaginative writing make for some amusing jokes through most of the film.
604- ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE
This terribly cheap and amateurish "horror" movie from 1986 stars Adam West. The scariest thing in this movie is the scene where the kid in his white underwear leaves a hot tub. Hilariously bad teen horror that works extremely well for MST3K. Zombie Nightmare is the only color film in this DVD set. This is a strong episode from the post-Joel era of the show.
616- RACKET GIRLS (with short: ARE YOU READY FOR MARRIAGE?)
This 1951 film is about a guy who runs a women's wrestling league as a front for all manner of illegal rackets. The film has a very "Ed Wood" quality to it. The movie and especially the short, Are You Ready For Marriage?, both work extremely well for the show.
Extras features include:
* Glimpses of KTMA (when the show was on a local channel in Minneapolis before it appeared on The Comedy Channel)
* The Design And Speculative Technology Of MST3K: Joel Hodgson And Trace Beaulieu Visit M.I.T.
* New Interviews with "Zombie Nightmare" stars Frank Dietz, Jon Mikl Thor and John Fasano.
* Kevin Murphy And Trace Beaulieu in a Sneak Peek of the upcoming independent feature film Hamlet A.D.D.
* Trailers/promos
* 4 limited edition mini-posters

When I first saw previews for this show, I just wasn't really that interested for some reason, but I watched it one evening about 1/2 way through Season 1 and was hooked. There are things in the show that disturb me though such as basically no parental supervision for these teenagers. One of the couples is married(they are supposedly 17 yrs old and married!!) The only one who has any rules is Lucas Scott(Chad Michael Murray). The premise of the show is that Lucas's Mom got pregnant as a senior in high school and her boyfriend, Dan Scott went off to college on a basketball scholarship.
Deb met Dan during Freshman orientation - one month after Karen told Dan she was pregnant.
When Dan's dream of a basketball career didn't work out, he returned to town with the wife he met in college and his new son, Nathan. Needless to say, it makes an awkward situation. What I like about this show is that it is a little bit different from other teeny-bopper shows(which I generally do like) I really like the romance between Lucas(Chad Michael Murray) and Brooke (Sophia Bush) although I wish they were still together in real life. Rumor has it he cheated with Paris Hilton. That makes me sick. Yuck.

One Tree Hill: The Complete Eighth Season (2010)

I have been watching this show since I was a young teen and it has definitelly played a part in my life. But I am starting for feel like the show has moved away from Tree Hill and more into a stupid Soap Opera about people getting laid and partying it up. I feel like all the life experiences that are true to life have been taken out of it. I also feel like the cast changes so much that it has lost its appeal. Nobody really cares about the lifestyles of the new cast, all they care about are the old familiar faces. What happened to Karen? What happened after Lucas and Peyton left home? What does their child and Lucas's sister Lily look like? What about Skills and Mouth and a lot of the other people who made the story great. Is Dan dead yet? What about Debora? I just think that this show needs to look back at the old cast who made the show so amazing, and the town and the team of Ravens that made it special. Its gotten to be more about the fame and fortune of the characters than what they used to stand for. What happened to the record store owner? (can't remember his name). I want the OLD Tree Hill back!

Jem and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series Review

Jem and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What makes this cartoon so different from the many others is the intricacy of the series, the show uses the characters as the central driving point in contrast to the majority of other cartoons that simply use them as a vehicle for mindless action. The reason for this is most likely the fact that the show was aimed at girls and as such random combat isn't appealing however, characters , relationships, and inner conflicts are. Jem features episodes that are both fun and exciting examples of such are "The Battle of the Bands", "One Jem to Many", and "The Fan" while there are also episodes that cause the show to transcend your everyday cartoon such as "Scandal", "Father's Day", "Riot's Hope", "A Father Should Be", and of course the wonderful back story episode "Out of the Past". The more powerful episodes feature complex themes such as the death of a parent, personal secrets, conflict among friends, and family strife. It's the mix of fun and depth that really make this such a wonderful show to watch, especially as an adult when you can really appreciate the themes.
Jem features three music videos spaced evenly throughout each episode breaking up the action nicely. The 80's songs are catchy and the videos fun. The show features talented voice over artists like Britta Phillips (singing voice of Jem), Samantha Newark (Voice of Jem/Jerrica), and Charlie Adler (Eric Raymond). Most characters are well thought out with real depth to their personality that is expanded upon throughout the series with well written and delivered dialog. The basic plots usually involve the rival band the Misfits that attempt to thwart Jem's plans out of jealously or Eric Raymond's goal of regaining control of Jerrica's business. Eric Raymond is noteworthy as a main antagonist as he uses manipulation, money, and thugs instead of "magical powerss" like most other cartoon villains, this brings a sense of reality that you don't often receive in a cartoon. Near the end of the series Eric Raymond becomes so ruthless in his ways that it reaches a point of utter cruelty you forget you are watching a children's cartoon. The show features positive messages throughout involving friendship, family, loyalty, and generally doing right, these values are in stark contrast to modern cartoons which feature no real consequences or purpose for the adventures that occur and one dimensional good characters with no flaws. Jerrica Benton(Jem) runs a foster home for girls that is funded entirely by her music company and it's primary act Jem and the Holograms, this noble undertaking gives real consequence to the struggles that occur and provides a sense of realism to the show. The struggles often involve Jerrica potentially losing her business which in turn would destroy her charity work, while at the same time she deals with an emotionally draining love triangle due to her dual identity as Jem that involves her boyfriend Rio.
While Jem has a few bad episodes, usually featuring forced or unoriginal stories, most are lighthearted and fun. If you have a cynical attitude such that you can't stomach positives messages without finding them "campy" or if you prefer to nitpick 1980's children's cartoons for plot holes (ex. why aren't the villains in jail for assault) then you won't likely enjoy this show and you should find the nearest theater showing "Transformers 5". Jem has wonderful characters, catchy 80's songs, and an interesting premise. A great deal of effort was put into character development allowing the viewer to get absorbed into the series following the struggles of the characters until the very end. You might find yourself enjoying a lighthearted episode only to be saddened by an unexpectedly emotional one that follows. Jem isn't political, sexual, violent, or negative but is able to be entertaining none the less. The writers of the show push Jem beyond your normal children's cartoon making it quite emotionally and thematically complex and worth watching from beginning to end.
Shout! Factory put a great of effort into the quality of the set with wonderful artwork, bonus features, and attention to detail such as the multicolored DVDs that look like records. The set is a perfect addition to any collection of quality TV shows.
