Dozen DVD Deal - Action (1981) Review

Dozen DVD Deal - Action (1981)
Average Reviews:

This is an interesting set of DVDs.
There are some good films here and some not so great.
"The Big Red One" is a much overlooked war film starring, believe it or not, Mark Hamill of "Star Wars" fame. The story is told very well.
"Fort Apache, The Bronx" stars Paul Newman and is really not so bad a cop film. If you like that genre, this is a good addition to your collection. Again, a well told story, if not a little dated.
"The Gauntlet" is a pretty good Clint Eastwood movie from 1977. Not one of his best, but not one of his worst either.
"Point of No Return" is the American version of "LaFemme Nikita" starring Bridget Fonda. The original is the better movie, but this one works. Its a fun watch.
"Ricochet" stars a pre-Oscar win Denzel Washington and a very over the top John Lithgow. It passes for entertainment, but barely. Lindsay Wagner shows up, if that helps.
"Soldier" is a Kurt Russel movie that he worked out for. Nice pecs, Kurt.
"Tango and Cash" is actually a pretty good film. Importantly, it does NOT take itself too seriously and it fun to watch. It stars Kurt Russel and Sylvester Stallone in their prime action-hero days.
"Victory" is a great film. The best featured here. It is placed in a concentration camp in WWII and its about soccer. You're intrigued, right? Its actually a very good movie, uplifting and well told. Again we have Sylvester Stallone and he's joined by Michael Caine and Pele (soccer superstar).
Obviously, there are some good films in this collection. Dont write it off without a consideration.

Comprehensive Applications of Shaolin Chin Na 2 Review

Comprehensive Applications of Shaolin Chin Na 2
Average Reviews:

This video does exactly what it says . It shows one a number of techniques and follows the supporting manual "Comprehensive Applications of Shaoling Chin Na" . The techniques are done smoothly and proficiently "well done" Dr. Yang. All in all a 1st rate production , some may complain that the technique are not shown often enough , only three times , but we all have rewind buttons , then some may complain they are shown too frequently but in different applications for different attacks (can't please everyone) Dr Yang does show many of the same techniques but each time they've got a slightly different twist (no pun intended)and it's useful to see the variation .
What I noticed different in this video from others of the genre was the lack of tape space used for superflous fluff , they didn't waste a lot of time or space , got right down to it no gratuitious advertising or flashy intermissions between techniques , good job. A wealth of information on this tape , will be using it extensively , much to learn , gain.

Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Bong Bo Kuen DVD Review

Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Bong Bo Kuen DVD
Average Reviews:

I wish all martial art dvds were made this good. No skipping, no freezing, it just plays smooth. The dvd is easy to navigate and there is plenty of information. The form is shown at full speed, then broken down and applications are taught. As a long time martial artist with 42 years of practice, I have seen a lot of folks and a lot of videos, few would compare to Sean and his work here. Oh, and most importantly, this is authentic Mantis Kung Fu. Besides my training in Tang Soo Do and Hapkido, I have also studied numerous Mantis systems, 7 Star, Tai Mantis, Southern and Korean Mantis and I can assure anyone thinking about buying this dvd or any other dvds by Sean, that this is the real deal. One last thing, after being in the martial arts for over 4 decades, it is my honest and educated opinion that Mantis kung fu is one of the best systems for overall practicality, thus, if you are new to the idea of Asian self-defense methods and not sure which one to study, then my advice to you is this; you cannot go wrong if you pick Mantis kung fu.

Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Bai Yuan Tou Tao ("White Ape Steals Peach") DVD Review

Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Bai Yuan Tou Tao (White Ape Steals Peach) DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must say the "White Ape Steals Peach" - DVD is VERY GOOD, with clear and precice instruction, that is easy to follow. I like the fact that they have included applications, different options to view the form, and detailed instructions on how to execute to moves.
Mantis is quite a tricky style to learn, and through DVD it is even more difficult, but having a background already in Mantis, I found this instruction DVD to be very easy to learn from.
This is excellent work!! Keep it up, and give us many more DVD`s in the future.
I hope to see more weapons-DVD`s also (saber, stick, sword or other "exotic" weapons) from MartialSkill.
I will definitely check out the other videos from MartialSkill as well, looking forward to see the "Chain Styles DVD" soon. :)

Iron Palm in 100 Days Review

Iron Palm in 100 Days
Average Reviews:

The video was pretty good, it's very straightforward. If your familiar with basic martial arts strikes you should have no problems, and he explains pretty well so beginners should be fine too. I do think it lacks in explanation of internal energy cultivation and projection, so having some internal energy experience would be beneficial to the user. If your just looking to get tough hands, this video will do it!

Tiger & Crane Fist Set: Fu Hok Seong Yin Kuen Review

Tiger and Crane Fist Set: Fu Hok Seong Yin Kuen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first impression of this DVD was the price, " WOW" why is this so expensive? After some hesitation I decided to purchase it, to my happy surprise it was well worth the money considering the amount of information it contained. The DVD package is nicely done, also the insert that outlines a summery origin of the form and it's training philosophy is a nice touch. Good angles showing the form in different directions, also the technical explanation is a good start for the layman beginner.
Over all considering the wealth of information in this DVD, it's worth the money. For those that have some martial arts back round this is a form you can learn from a DVD, Eddie Lane Sifu has given Wong Fei Hung's Fu Hok Seong Yin Kuen much respect

Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Lan Jie Quan ("Intercepting Fist") DVD Review

Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Lan Jie Quan (Intercepting Fist) DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Friends,
I recently ordered the Lanjie DVDs from [...] as I mentioned in the first post. I ordered them on May 14th., the order was sent out on May 24th and I received the DVDs on May 26th.. Sifu Daily apologized for the delay in shipping and kindly offered me a reduced price on my next order. Good customer service!
Production & Video Quality
In the middle 1980s I hired a video company to help me produce a videotape on the Fu Hok Sheung Ying Kuen form of Hung Gar Kung Fu. It sold very well in the U.S..
So, I have some experience in this field and the nightmare it can be to take on a project like this.
Martialskill's end product is very professional. From the DVD packaging to the content breakdown, everything far exceeds the DVDs I have purchased from other Mantis practitioners in the U.S., Taiwan, Hong Kong and Canada. Kevin Brazier is the only one I have found who puts out a similar quality video (Shaolin Eight Step Continuous Fist).
The video, sound, scene transitions, etc. are all professional quality.
Form Demonstration, Breakdown & Applications
First, I compared the demonstration of the Lanjie form to videos of other Qixing Tanglang practitioners found demonstrating this same form on YouTube and other video sites. Sifu Daily's performance is not only the best I have seen to date, but his "flair" in execution was quite inspiring.
Sifus Daily, Lopez and Brown each did an excellent demonstration of the traditional form. Sean Daily, the primary performer in the video, had a firm grasp of: cadence, speed and qixing tanglangquan's subtle power generation methods.
The form was broken down into five rows. Each row was taught step by step in a clear, precise manner. Footwork and power generation through the waist were constantly emphasized. The traditional names for the attacks were included in the instruction.
Each movement in the form was then demonstrated with a partner to show the common application used for self-defense.
One could choose to watch the step by step instruction of the movements, or watch a movement by movement application of the techniques separately.
Sifu Daily is an interesting speaker who was able to hold my attention. He explains complex comcepts in a simple way that I believe even a beginner could understand.
Summary
I would recommend this DVD set to any tanglangquan practitioner. Especially to qixing tanglangquan practitioners. If you like the beautiful aesthetics found in forms, its in there. If you like the practical applications found in forms, its in there. If you want a solid and clear explanation of tanglangquan theories, its in there.
I believe every penny I spent on these DVDs was a good investment in my own personal learning experience.

Wing Chun Kung Fu Review

Wing Chun Kung Fu
Average Reviews:

First off. This comes as a DVD-R not a pressed DVD, so incompatibility might occur on some DVD Players.
That being said, this is DVD rip of a VHS master. It's ok, it's basically the fundamental of Wing Chun. Not very good in the details. No chapter stops. I believe it's only 30 minutes long.
I would say that the cost and quality exceeds the value of this DVD.

To Be the Best (1992) Review

To Be the Best (1992)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually liked this movie the first time I saw it, but every time I watch it seems to get a little better. The fact is its a typical American martial arts movie that actually is above average in several regards. The story is simple, but actually develops and there is a bit of chemistry between characters. Most of the actors are familiar faces from many other martial arts movies such as Michael Worth (Final Impact, Fists of Iron), Martin Kove (The Karate Kid Series, Shootfighter), Steven Vincent Leigh (Deadly Bet, Ring of Fire), Ron Yuan (Ring of Fire 1 & 2), and Vince Murdocco (Kickboxer 2, Ring of Fire).
The movie has a decent amount of action from beginning to end, with most of the fights taking place in the tournament at the Sands hotel in Las Vegas. There are plenty of tournament fights and most are pretty decent. The only annoyance are the 2 announcers, who seem to describe every punch and kick as it happens.
To Be The Best could have turned out even better if the acting and some cheesy moments were improved upon, but thats typical of these type of films. If you like any of these martial artist actors, lots of tournament action, and flashy Las Vegas, this should be quite a pleaser.

Shaolin White Crane: Hard and Soft Qigong Review

Shaolin White Crane: Hard and Soft Qigong
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I myself have training in the arts of Tae Kwan Do and Karate. After I dedicated a few years to each school, I decided I enjoyed Chinese martial arts more so than Korean style. Every sect of martial art is unique and wonderful; however, I found the most enjoyment in Chinese. This in turn led a search to find a proper, traditional kung fu school. Well, such thing does not exist in Colorado, however, Dr. Yang's DVDs do!
Do not get me wrong, as White Crane techniques have been adapted into nearly every martial art, this DVD is priceless regardless of style (or lack there of.) This DVD is much more strenuous than some may believe too. Even in Soft Qigong, it is easy to break a sweat (if done properly.)
Dr. Yang's "Shaolin White Crane" book compliments this video. While the book is not required, it is highly recommended. It goes over the spiritual aspects, history, and breathing, while the video does not. In my opinion, the book may be more important than the physical training itself.
If you want to build a properly strong foundation for TRUE Shaolin Gong Fu (Kung Fu) studies as I am doing, this DVD is second to none. For you see, Dr. Yang is a White Crane (among other arts) student of two TRUE Shaolin masters (you will have to buy the book to see whom.)
This is a DVD I will be using ten - twenty - thirty years down the road with my White Crane studies. At YMAA.COM (Yang's Martial Arts Association) site, there are near countless other videos, books, compact discs, art, uniforms, etc. Included in these are White Crane Basic training 1 & 2 (2 tapes, or one DVD.) Moreover, Basic training 3 & 4 are due out in a month or two. Currently there are Kung Fu Fundamentals, Ti Chi, Chi Na, and much more, take time to visit www.ymaa.com, you will not be disappointed.
In addition, there is NO affiliation with YMAA and myself. I simply have much passion and respect for such true quality video training, A RARITY now a day.
I digress though; this DVD is broken down into Soft, Hard, and extras (ymaa video clips for others videos.) Within Soft and Hard are subdirectories that allow simple navigation to any point of study. I find the best feature is how there is nearly no talking, just soft Chinese music that escorts the current movement or exercise. Actual training is VERY easy to understand and follow, but to replicate the flowing movements of Dr. Yang, well that is up to hard work and time.
Yet that is what martial training is:
time, dedication, development, and enlightenment.
Peaceful Years.
Ivory Crane.
