Sparring: Tips, Tactics & Techniques to Dominate Your Opponent Review

Sparring: Tips, Tactics and Techniques to Dominate Your Opponent
Average Reviews:

I've been looking forward to a DVD on sparring for ages, and this is now on my list of favorites by Sammy Franco. If you've ever sparred with a more formidable opponent, you already know why, too. Unless you're a boxer, you don't spar for the sake of sparring. You spar in order to learn and benefit from the skills and attributes you can improve that will make you a better fighter. But like Mr. Franco says in the DVD, when you're a beginner or if you're sparring with someone more advanced than you, you go into "survival mode". You defend as much as possible, try to land a few hits every now and then, and hope for the best. You don't learn much, frankly. But it doesn't have to be that way.
This DVD will teach you the skills you need in order to start learning and to ultimately dominate your sparring partners. You will feel more confident and wonder how it is you ever sparred without these techniques in your arsenal. Oh... and you will LOVE the "steamroller" and "cover & crush" techniques!

Ok...so I bought it, watched it, and I laughed my A** off!
This is definately a DVD that comes down to a matter of personal opinion. If you're a person who is entertaining the thought of checking this DVD out, then more than likely you're the kind of person who won't be offended by it. The Boone Brothers do not disappoint, and their hilarious outtakes in between fights had me in stitches. The fights are real, the fighters are as "white trash" as they get, and the results are worth the price of admission. One spectator who watched the video with me had to leave the room because it was all a bit too much, which makes this my kind of DVD!! ;-)
My other friends who stayed and watched told me afterwards that they really enjoyed the 60 minute slug fest and wished it had lasted longer. So crack open a few beers (or whatever suits your fancy), gather your buddies and give it a go.
Pretty darn funny if you ask this reviewer!! Highly recommended as a party pleaser!

This is the best box set out there I would say, except maybe 1-10.
Genki Sudo in the octagon alone makes this worth it, but the number of classic fights in this era are truly staggering.
Lawler vs. Tiki, Lawler vs. Spratt, Hughes vs. Newton, Cabbage vs. Sylvia, Shamrock vs. Tito (Which is the fight that started this whole new UFC revolution if you ask me), Chuck vs. Babablu, the list goes on.
I'd say if you could find it, get it.

All of these posts have NOTHING to do with this DVD, The product on this page is the ULTIMATE 100 GREATEST FIGHTS... Not UFC 100 which all of you are ranting and raving about... UFC 100 would never sell for $90... you are all tools.... this is a recap of the top 100 fights in the UFC, Fans voted for their favorite fights of all time, they had a series on Spike that lasted about 5 episodes briefly covering all 100 bouts, this DVD *probably* has the entire length of the 100 fights on it, instead of just the Highlights like the show. Ha, even the front of this DVD has Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva on it, which was one of the most exciting fights of all time at UFC 79:Nemesis... Far from UFC 100, Next time you write a review and start telling everyone how great it is, make sure your writing a review on the correct product, in this case, the correct DVD. I do not own this DVD, and Im not saying what this DVD is or is not, but it is obviously not what the other posts are referring to. So Buyers beware, this product is not even for sale until November 2009, and the people below that are "Reviewing" this product, are sadly mistaken.

LYOTO MACHIDA
Volume 1
Movement and Fundamental Strikes
© Marc Wickert May 8, 2009
w[...]One thing that makes Lyoto Machida so unique in the world of mixed martial arts is that he has risen to the top whilst using a traditionally-based martial arts system.
Lyoto commences Volume 1with basic stretching exercises before using his brother Chinzo Machida to demonstrate the below techniques. `The Dragon' also spars with Chinzo at the end of each strike segment to illustrate how he puts it all together in free-flowing combos.
As with all Victory Belt books, all techniques are displayed from a variety of angles for more clarity.
*Movement: Shows the viewer how to develop a practical base, to make the movements flow freely, and how to close the gap when attacking. Being able to switch stance from orthodox to southpaw and to launch strikes from both stances is recommended. Pivoting whilst attacking, defending and counterattacking is demonstrated.
*Kicks: A wide variety of kicking weapons are illustrated. Lyoto shows how to use one's legs for defense by keeping opponents at a distance through powerful kicks and the use of evasive pivoting and cutting angles. He showcases kicks on mitts, focus pads, Thai pads and whilst sparring, and explains the best method to set up decoy strikes before landing devastating kicks. This section also reveals how to set up sweeps when one's opponent is most vulnerable.
*Punches: Lyoto possesses an extensive arsenal of punches and he shows what part of the hand to impact with in order to maximize damage delivered whilst minimizing damage to one's hand. Other techniques include: maintaining an effective guard, faking strikes to set up bigger punches, correct posture when delivering punches, and punch and kick combos. Machida then demonstrates how to deliver explosive finishing punches.
*Elbows: A wide variety of elbow techniques are illustrated from an even wider variety of angles. The viewer is shown the best methods for unleashing long-range and close-range elbow strikes, juicy targets to zone in on, how to set up spinning elbows, as well as employing elbows for attacking, defending, counterattacking, and countering kicks with elbows.

*Knees: Machida explains the difference between good and bad knees, then reveals how to set up knee strikes, tactics to close the gap before delivering the strikes, and the best ways to combine other strikes with knees. Flying knees and clinching to unload knees are also demonstrated before Lyoto mixes it up in a sparring session with Chinzo while incorporating all of the above techniques.
*Katas: Machida performs four katas that are both strenuous workouts and include powerhouse strikes and blocks. The last two katas are more complex and are shown at both normal speed and in slow motion.
And this is all on the first disc! LYOTO MACHIDA
Volume 2
Striking Attacks and Takedowns
© Marc Wickert May 15, 2009
[...]In Volume 1 Lyoto Machida began fusing his wide variety of strikes together to create destructive combos, and in Volume 2 he weaves together more powerhouse combos that are suitable for both MMA competition and street defense.
Again, as with all Victory Belt books, all techniques on this DVD are displayed from a variety of angles for complete clarity.
*Break and Enter: Lyoto shows how to break an opponent's guard and provide a corridor for unloading strikes. He then demonstrates the use of decoy tactics to set up primary hits, the use of low and high kicks, and combos incorporating all weapons earlier employed.
*Combos: Machida serves up more combos here than a Chinese chow mein restaurant, including attacks to the body and head, fighting same-stance opponents, fighting opposite-stance opponents, and correct positioning of shoulders to avoid telegraphing one's strikes.
*Mixed Bag: Lyoto reveals a variety of offensive sequences whilst altering the speed of strikes and the height of the targets he zones in on to keep his opponent on edge and guessing. Other areas covered are attacking off centerline and the use of closing distance with combos, which are particularly effective against adversaries with a reach advantage.
*Mind Game Techniques: Here Machida unlocks a vault of sneaky tactics to disrupt an opponent's focus and unsettle his balance. He also incorporates blinding decoy strikes to set up heavier shots and maneuvers that distract and confuse the enemy before punishing them with power blows.
*Pad Drills: Lyoto works with his brother, Chinzo, to illustrate 10 focus-pad drills and 11 Thai-pad drills for the viewer to practice. The pair also covers hand-trapping sweeps, and scoop sweeps against same-stance opponents and opposite-stance opponents.
*Machida Medley: Lyoto and Chinzo perform a medley of all of the above techniques to showcase their unique methods of combining devastating firepower with debilitating takedowns.
Although this DVD represents one disc from the 4 DVD Box Set, all four volumes are interrelated and blend perfectly to reveal the secrets of one of MMA's most destructive gladiators.LYOTO MACHIDA
Volume 3
Intercepting Attacks, Takedown Defense, & The Clinch
© Marc Wickert May 20, 2009
[...]
In Volumes 1and 2 Lyoto Machida focuses a lot on the dynamics involved in delivering crushing strikes. Volume 3 flows on from the previous DVDs, explaining how to use timing and distance to deliver those blows with maximum impact to your opponent and minimum risk to oneself.
Also covered on this disc are launching counterattacks, defending against takedowns, and fighting from the clinch.
During the introduction to Volume 3, Lyoto states: "In addition to learning the basic techniques, it is also very important that you focus on timing. As you will soon see, timing is very, very important. If your timing is off, utilizing one of the countering measures I lay out could be hazardous: instead of evading your opponent's attack and landing one of your own, you suffer the hit.
"Along these same lines, it is very important to develop a keen sense of distance. If you attempt to throw a kick and there's not adequate distance between you and your opponent, again you will suffer rather than your opponent," says Machida.*Intercepting Attacks: Lyoto reveals how to base your counter responses on your opponent's movements, and how to fight at long range in order to read those movements. Other techniques covered include closing range with strikes, and combining blocking with footwork.
Lyoto incorporates the above techniques in a sparring session with Chinzo before illustrating how to intercept round kicks, jabs, rear hooks and looping punches.
*Countering Takedowns: Machida demonstrates takedown defense through sprawling and redirecting your opponent's energy, fist and knee intercepts, and Thai clinching and counter attacks. He also focuses on counters to single- and double-leg takedowns before applying all of the above tactics in a spar with his brother.
*Clinching: This section deals with establishing the Thai clinch and delivering knee strikes, use of Thai clinches to off balance your opponent, and elbow strikes from the clinch.
*Basic Overhook-Underhook Positioning: Lyoto demonstrates striking from over-under, inside knee blocks and leg trips from the clinch, double underhook takedowns, and basic clinch defense.
As the rear cover states, "If your goal is to steer the direction of a fight and inflict damage without taking abuse, this DVD is for you."LYOTO MACHIDA
Volume 4
The Ground Game
© Marc Wickert May 23, 2009
[...]
As with the three previous volumes, Lyoto commences this disc with appropriate stretching exercises to prepare practitioners for his upcoming techniques.
*Attacking the Downed Opponent: Lyoto reveals a variety of weapons at one's disposal, and methods for delivering them whilst avoiding up-kicks. He also demonstrates how to apply a nasty foot-lock submission.
*G'N'P from Full Guard: Machida shows how to keep your hands free to ground and pound while pinning your opponent down. He then illustrates ways to strike an adversary from the guard and employ optimal dynamics, and tactics to pass the guard and move to side control or the mount.
*G'N'P from Half Guard: Lyoto covers positioning to avoid counter submissions, and the strategy of varying the targets you select in order to confuse your opponent. Other techniques shown include: submissions from half guard, passing half guard, leg locks from half guard, and ways to escape your opponent's kimura attempts before submitting him with an arm bar.
*G'N'P from Side Control: `The Dragon' runs through straight g'n'p, knee-on-belly positioning, arm traps, immobilizing one's opponent to apply submissions, and side control to mount transitions.
*G'N'P from Mount: Techniques covered include stabilizing your mount position, pinning your opponent whilst unloading g'n'p, and setting up submissions from the mount.
*Taking Opponent's Back: Machida explains how to create openings and to submit adversaries through rear naked chokes, arm bars and katagatames.
*Defending from the Ground: Lyoto demonstrates ways to avoid a prolonged closed guard, how to use your feet and knees to hamper your opponent's attack, and methods to control his hands and arms. Sweeps and submissions from below are also illustrated...Read more›

Mastering The Rubber Guard Review

Mastering The Rubber Guard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been training in BJJ for only 5 months and obviously still a white belt. One thing I noticed is how I always found myself in the half guard (about 70% of the time), constantly trying to keep my opponents leg from passing into side control. At the same time I was taught to stick in the butterfly hook in and sweep him before he is able to finagle his leg out and control me from the side. Needless to say my percentage was very low in sweeping anyone, unless they were a newbie white belt. I was extremely frustrated and never wanted to be on my back, but all of the bigger and stronger guys were able to muscle me to the floor at the beginning of rolling.
Then I came across the half guard game that Eddie teaches with the lock down. What a difference! With the Rubber Guard DVD I started practicing mechanics of Old School, Electric Chair, and Returning to Full Guard. It has been about two months since my start, and I have become proficient, but not perfect; But no one in my gym seems to know about this system, or want to learn it so I got away with moves even if they are semi sloppy. This gave me the comfort and confidence on being on my back! I think a couple guys have the Rubber Guard book, but no one has shown me or attacked with a lock down/grape vine, or any rubber guard for that fact. Maybe they are not flexible or are embarrassed to use it because it is not taught in my school.
WHAT THIS REVIEW IS ULTIMATELY ABOUT:
The other day I had to roll with the second head instructor of my school. No doubt, a black belt, given by Carlos Gracie Jr. I had never rolled with him before, but everyone told me how strong, efficient, and great he is. He let me fall into his guard and the first three minutes and as we were moving and rolling, he caught me in a arm triangle choke. I was kind of embarrassed because I saw it coming and was almost able to defend it, but it was to late. Then, I decided to let him come to me, and I pulled him into my half guard. Quickly I pulled the lock down, softly, not to alert him to what I was trying to do. Then as I went for the Old school Sweep, I noticed there was also an opportunity to go for the electric chair. I figured if there was ever a chance to submit my instructor, this would be it! I under hooked his leg and I tried to whip my leg up and across, but all of his weight was on the back leg. For a split second I thought to myself, "Damn, this guy also studied Eddie Bravo's Guard!" But no more then 3 seconds later, I felt his weight shift off the back leg, and I quickly whipped my lock down to the left and he fell right into the Electric Chair. In hopes that he would realized he was done, I didn't want to go to hard because I was afraid of hurting his hamstrings. But, I could tell on his face that the discomfort was not enough for him to tap. He tried to defend by grabbing my head, but I jolted it back and cranked it up. All I could hear was my other instructor/friend in my head say, "Never Let go!" Needless to say he tapped a couple seconds later. It was almost surreal to see a black belt on the floor ashamed that a white belt just tapped him out.
I can't wait to utilized the other 90% of the DVD's instructions. If this is what the 10 percent can do for me, then I can't wait to use the rest. Just always remember to work on flexibility, and repeat the drills over and over, until you get the mechanics engraved into your brain. If it worked for me, it can work for anyone!

This might have been the least interesting seasons of TUF. Kos' trash talking skills are pretty weak. He uses the "bro you're a nurse", line about 20 times without being able to come up with any remotely original follow-up insults. Yes, he's good at getting people to hate him, but why is that considered a skill these days?
GSP is likeable but other than his "bully" story on the bonus footage, he doesn't have a lot of interesting things to say either.
Most of the house antics we've seen before in previous seasons (smashing stuff, lame "pranks"). Most of the conflicts amongst the fighters were the drunken "I'd squash you" stuff which became stale many seasons ago.
In my opinion the highlights of the show were GSP's Thai boxing coach showing up drunk before sparring sessions and Cody's deadly skills with the guillotine.

Don't bother craning your neck to catch a glimpse of Greg Jackson agonizing his way through Georges St. Pierre's UFC welterweight title defense against Carlos Condit Oct. 29 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Tweet, tweet
Don't miss a moment of the latest MMA coverage from around the world. Follow us on Twitter and stay informed. Join »He won't manage either corner. As a matter of fact, the respected trainer doesn't plan on being anywhere near the building after he's done handling Donald Cerrone earlier that evening.
Jackson, of course, has cultivated a well-deserved reputation for his role as the chief voice and key strategist for some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts. He's long been a staple of St. Pierre's camp, and in the last year he helped corner Condit to three stoppage victories as well.
With the deep reservoir of talent that circulates through Jackson's Albuquerque, N.M., gym and its affiliates in Denver, New York and Montreal, this is bound to happen more often. Jackson wasn't prepared the first time, but lessons learned from the saga that played out between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans helped the trainer and his brain trust formulate a contingency plan the next time two of the camp's stars faced one another.
St. Pierre-Condit isn't nearly as polarizing to the camp as Jones-Evans. Neither fighter has trained much (if at all) with the other. And Condit has never worked with Jackson's East Coast contingent, including New York-based John Danaher or Montreal-based Firas Zahabi.
Still, Jackson refuses to be involved in any aspect of the fight. From game planning to coaching to fight week prep and cornering, he doesn't want to touch any of it. It's just easier this way.
As far as changes go, St. Pierre may not head to Albuquerque at all now. That means more time training in with Zahabi and Danaher.
It shouldn't hinder him in any kind of way, Danaher said.
"Game planning has always been a collaborative affair since the beginning of [St. Pierre's] career, the majority of which is done in Montreal, so this too will be unaffected," Danaher suggested. "Both athletes are very professional and will be ready for action on Oct. 29."
Condit's focus shifts from B.J. Penn to St. Pierre with the help of Mike Winkeljohn and others in New Mexico.
Jackson knows he'll be asked many times between now and the fight about the pair's strengths and weaknesses. He's already crafted a simple response that touches on the virtues of both men, and finishes with how little he's looking forward to the bout.
Danaher can afford to be less political, though he remains nonetheless effusive in his praise of Condit.
"He presents a very real danger due to his ability to end a fight at any moment throughout the duration of the match," said the New Zealand-born jiu-jitsu instructor.
Danaher referenced Condit's success against several of the same opponents St. Pierre faced in recent years and summed up the fight like this: "A fascinating match-up of the consummate finisher versus the super-skilled tactician."
The fallout at Jackson's might just be as interesting to analyze.

Takedowns and Takedown Defense for MMA Review

Takedowns and Takedown Defense for MMA

This is a good solid DVD and and has really good techniques. I won't bother going over the techniques since the other review has a comprehensive list of them.
Pros:
1) A plethora of good techniques that are well executed, and shown from an infinite variety of angles.
2) Good menu system. Very easy to find the one technique you want to rewatch
3) Really breaks down take down defense as a set of 'three levels of defense' (footwork, underhooks, sprawl)
This was the first time I felt satisfied after watching a DVD about takedown defense. I felt Rutten's and Machida's DVDs fell a little flat in this area.
Cons:
1) Feels like a collection of techniques. It lacks the cohesiveness of the Machida DVD
2) The one bonus feature is of A. Silva sparring. That is great and all, but I would have liked to see an interview akin to the Machida DVD. Would have been great to learn more about the man behind the techniques.
All in all I am satisfied with this purchase.

This DVD is great. Obviously Nog has one of the best guards in the history of MMA, and he shows all his best moves with the help of his brother Rogerio. It's all geared towards MMA, and Nogueira himself explains the details. He covers everything from reversals to submissions. The quality of the DVD is among the best I've ever seen. Audio, video, and the menus are all flawless. I highly recommend this DVD.

He demonstrates how to obtain control of your opponent utilizing his patented posture control positions, and then use those control positions to lock in brutal submissions, execute seamless sweeps, and make smooth transitions to more dominant positions. Unlike most DVDs, this is not a random collection of moves. In GUARD FOR MMA, every technique is tied together, allowing you to capitalize on your opponent s defensive reactions. Over twenty years in the making, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira s guard system leaves no stone unturned.
