Knockout's (1994) Review

If you are not a fan of "sexploitation" films--i.e., where the number of fetching young women in various stages of undress in the movie greatly exceeds the number of men PERIOD--then KNOCKOUTS is barely 2 stars, and only that many because it has something like a coherent plot. As a "sexploitation" film, though, it has all the requisite criteria (the aforementioned bevy of attractive and scantily clad stars and co-stars, seldom missed oppurtunities to display them, etc.), plus a surprisingly well executed gimmick: the five "good girl" college co-eds try to raise much needed cash by taking on an equal number of nasty "bad-girl" biker babes in a series of boxing, kickboxing, and pro-wrestling bouts that take up the last third of the film. That these matches actually happen AT ALL is amazing: in Hollywood, even a mild catfight, let alone ring boxing and wrestling, is frequently teased and then blown off with the skill of a carnival barker. But KNOCKOUTS actually provides the goods at the end, though let's just say that, with the exception of the pro-wrestling match (which is an easy "work", as the WWF/WCW prove on a weekly basis), Jackie Chan has no need to look over his shoulder when it comes to "authentic" martial arts action, and a modest suspension of disbelief is necessary. Still, given the USUAL level of suspension of disbelief necessary to enjoy a happy little T&A exercise like KNOCKOUTS, that shouldn't be too hard ;)!

Cinema's Dark Side - Impact/The Second Woman/They Made Me A Criminal (1939) Review

Cinema's Dark Side - Impact/The Second Woman/They Made Me A Criminal (1939)

"Impact" and "The Second Woman" are excellent examples of the kind of quality programmers that Hollywood seemed to churn out effortlessly in its golden age. Both have clever, tight plotting, well-written dialogue and fine acting. Neither director is much remembered these days, but on the evidence here they deserve reassessment. "They Made Me a Criminal" is solid too, but not really a film noir and not as interesting as the other two. The quality of the prints on this triple-feature DVD is surprisingly good, and the whole package is an amazing bargain.

The Cheerleaders Collection (The Cheerleaders/Revenge of the Cheerleaders/The Swinging Cheerleaders) (1973) Review

The Cheerleaders must be one of the most heavily censored erotic films around (I know of at least 4 different versions). That's amazing, given that there is no hard-core activity or male nudity. It may be testimony to the sheer erotic intensity the film generates. This is the so-called "hard R" version, the original release print, and it looks great. Included is a stills gallery of "Cheerleader Cheesecake", including what appear to be the motel room audition photos, and some incredible pooside shots of Stephanie Fondue. Fans of this film will be well rewarded.
The film's reputation as an erotic classic stems from numerous things that lift it above its competition: the girls are lovely, sexy and young (they actually look like high schoolers, not srippers); the photography is clear; the editing allows the action to unfold without a lot of jump cuts; the humor is genuinely funny; and the film develops a steady rhythm by quickly moving from one erotic scenario to another. In short, it delivers on its promise to be arousing, and it never lets up. If you liked the shower scene in Porkys, here's a whole movie's worth.
Like any truly great film, this one created a genre of imitations, none even remotely as good as the original. The other two films in this package are interesting only as examples of that, despite the presence of Rainbeaux Smith (Drum) in both.
The package includes a booklet with a good essay by Gary Hertz. All in all, a classy presentation, and thank you to Anchor Bay for doing a first-rate job with a deserving film.
