This comprehensive survey of the history of the University of Georgia's famed mascot is not just for fans or alumni of UGA--I recommend it to anyone interested in the history of college athletics in general and of the South over the last sixty or seventy years. The filmmakers cover every aspect of the mascot UGA's history and then some, interviewing not just the obvious participants--former UGA football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley, former UGA and professional football star Herschel Walker, and of course UGA's owner, Sonny Seiler, and his family--but also so many other interesting "characters," major and minor, who have had some contact or involvement with UGA (the school and/or the dogs)--John Berendt and Lady Chablis of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" fame, the cartoonist Jack Davis (who provided the wonderful opening credits and other artwork for the documentary), even the photographer who snapped the famous image of UGA trying to bite an Auburn player who had just scored a touchdown against the Bulldogs. In addition, the documentary contains a lot of great archival film, video, and photographs of the Seilers and their dogs, the Bulldogs football team and its coaches, the UGA campus, and the cities of Athens and Savannah. Voiceover narration conveying the "thoughts" and "observations" of the mascots themselves provides additional humor. And the bulldogs are really adorable, of course, and not just when they're puppies.
It's obvious the folks who made this film have great affection for the subject of their documentary, and they successfully convey the joy and excitement that the mascots have brought to their owners, friends, and fans--and also the deep sadness that the whole Seiler family has felt at the passing of each bulldog mascot (there have been six UGAs so far).
The DVD includes additional features such as a short film about Jack Davis, who has drawn the UGA mascot for many years (and whose artwork will be familiar to anyone who has read MAD magazine during the last half-century), and a look at Davis's work process in creating the animation for "Damn Good Dog"'s opening credits.
