Richardson speaks with Charlie Rose about the second volume of his monumental Picasso biography. This focuses on the years 1907-17. According to Richardson these are the years of Picasso's greatest and most revolutionary contribution to Art History. 'Demoiselles d'Avignon' is the cubist masterpiece which Richardson says marks the watershed, begins the new era in modern painting. Richardson also talks about Picasso's desire to be a great heroic revolutionary figure, his changing his whole mode of life and activity in accordance with the woman in his life at the time. Richardson speaks especially strongly about Picasso's paintings of Dora Maar which he considers great masterpieces of suffering, on the level of Van Gogh's greatest work.
