(More customer reviews)Forty-one years after the Gateway Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Browns, the state of Missouri was divided between the east and west as the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Kansas City Royals in seven games. This was rather surprising because the Royals not only lost the first two games of the Fall Classic at home, they were down 3-1 in the series before coming back to take the title. After those first four games in was clear that Cardinals ace John Tudor, who gave up only one run in winning two games, was going to be the Series MVP, while the only bright spot for the Royals was their Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen, who had their one victory. Saberhagen had to pitch the pennant clincher in the American Legue Championship, which is why he was not available until Game 3. In the end, Tudor and Saberhagen would go against each other in the deciding game. The problem was that in those last three games the Redbirds score only two runs in one of the biggest turnarounds in World Series history. Since 1985 other teams have lost the first two games at home and won the World Series, but there is something to be said for doing it first.
Now, any Cardinals fan can tell you that this World Series came down to one incredible bad call, which was so bad it apparently cost two games (sound familiar, Cub fans?). Danny Jackson pitched a five hitter to win Game 5 by a 6-1 score and the series returned to Kansas City for another classic Game 6. Neither team scored until the Cardinals scratched for a run in the eighth. In the bottom of the ninth pinch hitter Jorge Orta hit a slow roller to first baseman Jack Clark, who tossed the ball to reliever Todd Worrell covering the play. Instant replays clearly showed otherwise, but umpire Don Denkinger called Orta safe. The rest of the inning was as surreal as the final at bats for the New York Mets in Game 6 the following year. The Royals got a couple of singles while the Cardinals missed a pop foul and added an intentional walk to the mix, and Dane Iorg drove in the tying and winning runs. Game 7 was anticlimatic. Serries MVP Saberhagen gave up only five hits while seven Cardinal pitchers gave up 11 runs. However, the game was over when Darryl Motley hit a two-run dinger in the bottom of the second, and Dick Howser's Royals had the only World Series title in Kansas City history. Consequently, sales of this video in the western part of the Show Me state should be considerably higher than those at the eastern end of I-70.
