Coppin State was a #15 seed and South Carolina was a #2 seed from the powerful SEC. Coppin State was a 20 point plus underdog and ended up beating South Carolina 78-65 going away. This will go down as one of the greatest upsets in the history of the NCAA Tournament. Coppin State would go on to nearly knock out Texas in the second round but lost by 1.
Coppin State was lead by Antoine Brockington, Reggie Welch, Turquin Mott, Danny Singletary, and Fred Warrick. This became a series of home games for Coppin State who is from the Pittsburgh area and these games were played in the Civic Center.
