Athletic Body in Balance DVD Review

This should be required reading for athletes as well as coaches. The author does an excellent job in defining the "weakest link" as a cause of injury or tissue failure, and distinguishing between the too-often blamed "over-training" and the real culprit, improper training. Stability is emphasized, as it should be, as the basis for effective movement. (As my Burmese boxing coach once told me, it does no good to launch a rocket from a bamboo pad.) Other good points of emphasis, among many, are the need to relax to maintain fluidity with speed, and to "be quick but don't forget to stick." Again, in boxing we were always told to stick and move, but too often the person advising this had no idea of how to go about it, let alone teach someone else to do it. Gray Cook does. Throughout the book, his prose is effective, his explanations are clear and concise, and his recommended goals are accompanied by explicit step-by-step instructions to achieve them. For poviding the reader an understanding of athletic movement and training and actual how-to for practice and execution, this book tops my list.

You work out and train hard. You know you can reach that next level of performance. But are you doing all that you can to get there? Adding absolute strength and power often creates muscle imbalances and mobility limitations that cause injuries and limit skill training. The Athletic Body in Balance DVD is the first of its kind to show how to identify and correct muscle imbalances, mobility restrictions, and stability problems.

Host Gray Cook is a physical therapist and sports conditioning expert who has proven the effectiveness of his approach through the performances of athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL, WNBA, and Reebok® University's sports training system. Cook's methods detect where conditioning is breaking down and reveals how to get your body back on track. Included in the DVD are five assessment tests to help you find the imbalances in movement patterns, sample corrective exercises to improve mobility and stability, and ways to integrate these exercises into a regular training program. The tests include

-deep squat—assessing the mobility and stability of the hips, knees, and ankles

-hurdle steps—evaluating bilateral mobility and stability of the hips, knees, and ankles

-in-line lunge—determining hip mobility and stability, quadriceps flexibility, and ankle and knee stability on both sides of the body

-straight leg raise—gauging hamstring flexibility

-seated rotation—measuring uppertrunk stability during a combined upper- and lower-body movement

Move more efficiently and achieve real gains in performance with the Athletic Body in Balance DVD.

Human Kinetics DVDs are coded for universal playback and can be played in all regions of the world.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) Review

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962)

I saw this British film when it first came out in 1962 and never forgot it. I even remember an argument I had with my aunt about its controversial theme - that of an alienated angry young man who defiantly refuses to conform to the system. Shot in black and white, the video stars Tom Courtenay as a working class Nottingham youth who is sent to a reformatory because of a robbery. Michael Redgrave is cast as the warden, referred to as the "governor" as this is a British film. It is a modern reformatory, and plans are being made to for it to compete in sports with a private school. The long distance run is considered the biggest prize and Courtenay is granted special privileges as he stands out as someone who could actually win. He's allowed to take long runs outside of the reformatory gates each day, and the cinematography here is outstanding. During these runs, Courtenay experiences flashbacks of his life and we see a picture of its grimness. We see his anger at the system and admire him for belief in his ideals. And yet we also want him to win the race and move into a more privileged life. Finally the day of the run arrives. And young Courtenay makes his decision. It is startling and yet something we can understand. No wonder it's haunted me all these years.
Now, watching the video all these years later, I found it a little slow for my taste, especially since I already knew the ending. And, also, as with many British films on video, I sometimes wish there were subtitles. But this is a film that makes me think. I think about choices I've made in my own life. I think about how they turned out. And I think about the message of the film - still fresh after all this time. Recommended.

If you know a runner ask them about Dean Karnazes. Everyone has their opinion about him some see him as a role model some do not. I saw this movie before I ever heard anyone debate about Dean. Even if you are not a fan of Dean this is truly an amazing film. This movie follows Dean as he travels around the country to run 50 marathons in 50 days. Some marathons are recreated on the course they take place on at a later date and some are live. Dean invites runners to come out an join him. Heavy rain, injury (Dean takes a pretty bad spill) and even running into a pole do not stop these determined runners. The first few marathons get more screen time and some marathons are recapped due to time constraints. The experience at each marathon is different and Dean meets some truly inspirational runners at these races. This film is not only inspirational but thought provoking. A must see for any runner epically someone cosidering entering a full marathon or an ultra running event. If you enjoy this move here are a few more you may enjoy Spirit of the Marathon,Running on the Sun,Running the Sahara [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Great Britain ], and The Runner: Extreme UltraRunner David Horton

Running-The BK Method Review

Running-The BK Method

Although presented well, there is too much information on this DVD series for the average person. This is more for a coach or someone maybe wanting to teach. I did learn a lot, but it was mostly over my head. My goal was to learn a bit of running technique and this was way more than I needed and kind of fried me by the end. Your needs may vary, so decide accordingly.

Trail Running Review

Trail Running
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Filmed in high-definition this new trail running DVD by Dave McMahon and xczone.tv is very impressive. Not only does it open with some gorgeous trail running footage, the great instructional tips about trail running technique keep the viewer interested throughout the entire video. Feature interviews with Ray Zahab, one of Canada's most extraordinary ultra runners, add even more credibility and interest to this trail running DVD.
The DVD begins by clearly explaining the differences between road running and trail running. In this section the producer was clearly unapologetic about the benefits of trail running over road running, and really who can blame him? Trail running does have a plethora of benefits over road running, perhaps the most documented of which is its ability to prevent injury. The DVD then smoothly transitions into answering some of the first questions a new trail runner might ask, such as "Will I twist my ankle?" or "How do I run uphill". Dave and Ray answer these and other questions in a logical systematic manner, without ever trivializing the questions that new trail runners might ask. The DVD seems truly made for both the beginner and the advanced runner as it boasts on its website.
Next, the DVD moves into some instruction about technique, including uphill and downhill running as well as dealing with difficult terrain such as rocks and ledges. At this point in the DVD some of the earlier beautiful footage is re-used a bit, but it usage doesn't at all detract from the message. The instruction section on technique is explained very clearly, with additional instructions for advanced runners weaved nicely into the commentary. The footage for the instruction section is slowed at appropriate points to show the viewer exactly how to execute certain techniques properly. New runners or experienced runners should find this helpful as many of us get sloppy in our technique over time. This part of the DVD also has some basic drills that Dave has adapted from track and field, but equally apply to any running. Individuals who have come to running without ever running on a track team may find these short drills helpful in improving their technique. Others, like myself, found it was a good reminder that you shouldn't throw away everything you learned from your high school track coach. The instructional section does not linger on unnecessary points as some lesser ones would do. Rather it stays focused on the most important techniques required for trail running and keeps the attention of the viewer the whole time.
Overall, the video is extremely well-done in all aspects, including instruction, video footage, editing, and commentary. The best aspect of this DVD is that it is one of the most inspiring instructional videos about trail running that I've seen in awhile. Few producers are able to integrate great instruction with great inspiration, but Dave and the team at xczone.tv has done just that with the new trail running DVD. I would suggest this DVD to experienced trail runners and beginners alike. If you or someone you know is considering trail running, but is uncertain of it for fear of its danger or due to lack of experience, sit down and watch this DVD. You just may be hiting the trails even before it's finished.

Running on the Sun (1999) Review

Running on the Sun (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A film by Mel Stuart
"Running on the Sun" is a documentary dealing with the Badwater 135 Ultra-marathon. While an ultra-marathon is defined as any race with a distance longer than a marathon (26.2 miles), Badwater is a grueling 135 mile race beginning in Death Valley (Badwater, California, elevation 282 feet below sea level) and ascending to 8000 feet by the race's end which includes an 18 mile stretch where the elevation rises over 5000 feet. With temperatures reaching 125 degrees in the middle of the day, the Badwater 135 is perhaps the nastiest race in the world. Only forty runners were invited to run Badwater in 1999.
This documentary focuses on a cross section of some of the competitors to give an accurate portrait of what Badwater is and what Badwater does to a person. From a Marine to a man with a prosthetic leg to a 68 year old man to the current record holder of Badwater to a woman from England who put herself into debt to make it to Badwater, "Running on the Sun" has an interesting cast of characters. But then anyone actually willing to attempt Badwater probably has to be an interesting person. So many of these runners are just ordinary people with an extraordinary drive, passion, and commitment. Very few runners are actually trying to win the race, or break a record, but rather they are seeking the incredible personal accomplishment of finishing (60 hours or less) and perhaps even chase the goal of finishing in under 48 hours and thus earning the symbol of pride: The Badwater Belt Buckle. Only those few who can finish in under 48 hours can earn that belt buckle (and they do "earn" it).
"Running on the Sun" touches upon why someone would run Badwater and what it takes. We see graphic footage of the feet of some of the runners and it isn't pretty. The film shows the joy, the pain, the pride, the disappointment, and the accomplishment of running Badwater. This really is an impressive documentary about an incredible endurance race. I'm impressed all the more because I'm currently training for my first marathon and while 26.2 miles seems like a long way, Badwater is 5 marathons back to back, plus a little bit more. Not to mention the whole Death Valley thing. It's beyond my comprehension as a runner.
There is something in "Running on the Sun" to recommend the movie to anyone. Runners will get to see something that is probably beyond their dreams or even desire, but they will surely appreciate the effort. Other endurance athlete can also appreciate what the competitors of Badwater are attempting. Those who are simply curious will see a film about perseverance and accomplishment through adversity. This is an inspiring and awe inspiring film, though I imagine many people won't get why someone would do this.
-Joe Sherry
