I have all of the Lance TdF disks. The best ones are the extemded 10-12 hour collections. But if you don't have the time and just want to see the highlights, this 4 hour edition is perfect. The announcers are perfection. Best in the business.

Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance Review

Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I got my first job at a bike shop, my boss handed me a copy of Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance and said "read this by next week." Lennard has been making bicycle maintenance instruction manuals for 11 years and has perfected teaching in a way that we can all understand. His latest teaching tool comes on DVD.
Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance (DVD) is a fully comprehensive manual for mountain bike maintenance, repair, and component installation. The material is presented in a manner that is clear and easy to understand in even in the most intricate procedures. This DVD is a wonderful introduction for the would be mechanic, acts as powerful reference tool before starting more complicated repairs, and is great way for solid mechanics to learn some of Lennard's many tricks.
If you ride frequently you have undoubtedly realized how expensive and inconvenient it is to bring your bike to a shop every time it needs servicing, which is arguably before every ride. For this reason many bike enthusiasts also become a do-it-yourself bike mechanic. There is no better way to familiarize yourself with the basics on how to keep your beloved steed running perfectly than to watch to Lennard explain it on this informative DVD.
Perhaps the most amazing aspect of this instruction manual is how Lennard breaks down even the most complicated repairs into step-by-step procedures that we can all understand. This enables intermediate mechanics to be confident with advanced procedures. Zinn overhauls a Shimano and Mavic hub, several different style headsets, and even a complicated Fox fork. I found the section on disc brakes quite helpful; Lennard bleeds a Shimano XT, Avid Juicy 7, Hayes El Camino, and Hayes Sole and Nine hydraulic disk brake. He also talks about how the job differs with other popular models. These are just a few of the repairs Lennard explains as the DVD does a very thorough job of covering every part of a mountain bike. In some sections there are even multiple explanations of the same job: one using basic tools and one that explains how to use the cool really ones that make life easy.
Zinn's new DVD doesn't replace or outdate his books, but instead complements them. Lennard suggests watching the relevant video sections before attempting unfamiliar repairs, then keeping the book handy for reference while you are working. In this way Lennard has created a multimedia-learning tool that is particularly effective for reaching people of all different learning styles.
I have been a professional mechanic for several years and still I learned a few things from Zinn's DVD. I liked it so much that I have lent it to several other mechanics at the shop; it gets two big thumbs up from me! My only question is: what's next? Maybe Zinn and The Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance, book on CD?!

2000 Tour de France 8-Hour Remastered Review

2000 Tour de France 8-Hour Remastered
Average Reviews:

Another great set from WCP, and well worth the money. These extended sets are amazing, with lots of coverage for the big stages.
This was a much more exciting tour than '99, and Armstrong faced stiff competition from two former winners. Many at the time thought he would not be able to compete with them. Pantani was considered too talented in the mountains and Ullrich too great a time-trialist. However, Armstrong beats them both in their own specialties.
The lead up to the Mont Ventoux stage is interesting, as you see how much riders actually fear this climb. The stage itself provides excellent viewing, and a finish that Armstrong regrets to this day.
Even though Armstrong is dominant, he's not infallible. He and Pantani get into a war of words (also captured well on this set), and that leads him to chasing the Italian down when he shouldn't. This backfires, and he bonks hard. Armstrong has been so dominant in the tour; it's surprising to see him struggle. He probably learned a valuable lesson.
This production does have a few problems. There's some picture break up at times, but that's due to the source material. WCP continues to do a straight transfer from VHS, which I just don't understand. Therefore, you get stages spread across DVDs. All in all, though, it's well worth having. The battles for the points and climber jerseys are covered, and this tour sees the reintroduction of the team time trial and white jersey for best young rider. Well worth the money, and highly recommended.

1999 Tour de France 8-Hour Remastered Review

1999 Tour de France 8-Hour Remastered
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've always been interested in road cycling, but it's never received much press in the United States. Even today, the only cycling event that gets decent live coverage in the US is the Tour de France, and that's because an American is dominating the event. I watched nearly every minute of the 2001-2004 events, but I was only able to see highlights of the 1999 and 2000 events. I've always wondered what that race must have been like. Now I know.
The tactics used by US Postal are completely different in 2004 than they were in 1999. US Postal was not the team that it is in 2004. Lance Armstrong had to do almost all the work on his own. Armstrong is dominant in the mountains and in the Time Trials. Just watch Armstrong yelling at himself to keep working during the second time trial. It's very intense. When you consider he'd just returned from his cancer battle, it's really an amazing thing. Watching this incredible feat was a lot of fun.
All the big moments are captured, and not just the ones involving Armstrong. Crashes by Zulle and Julich are covered, and a collision between a spectator and a rider is caught live as you watch the dramatic finish on one of the climbs. All the crazy spectators make an appearance as well.
This package is not without it's problems. It's a straight transfer from VHS, so some stages are actually split between two discs. It would have been nice if they would have corrected this. However, this package is more than I ever thought would be available. It's a solid eight hours. Some of that time is taken up by interviews and footage from previous years, but most is 1999 race coverage. Good coverage is also given to the green jersey and king of the mountains battles, but Armstrong is the clear star of this show. I recommend this to any new cycling fan who'd like to see the genesis of the greatest Tour de France rider. You won't be disappointed.

Great footage of the rampage. It is amazing what these guys do on a mtn bike. The blu ray makes you feel like your there espcially during the helmet cam segments. My complaint is for the price its not a very long video. Soundtrack is ok. Should have been more biking and less watching the guys driving to the contest. Would definitly wait till the price drops.

Ride the Divide Review

Ride the Divide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was sure I'd love this film and watch it repeatedly. I was expecting it to showcase the awesome scenery and challenging terrain of the Great Divide route along with some fantastic mountain biking footage. It did deliver some of that, maybe 20% of the content. There was a stunning shot of the Tetons rising above Jackson Lake. A clever interview with a "typical Montanan" out cuttin fire wood. An excellent sequence covering Matthew Lee as he bivies up for the night and then makes it to town the next morning for a real breakfast. Lee also contributes the best interview material as someone who is a repeat rider on the Great Divide, obviously appreciates and respects the route and has something worthwhile to say. Finally, there is a very short bonus feature on mountain bike gear for racing the Great Divide.
Unfortunately the bulk of the film (80%) plays out like bad reality TV. Too much whining: about hills, and snow, and bears, in the middle of nowhere, without email, and no one to talk to, I wanna go home! Too many scenes wasted on people talking on cell phones. Why?
I think this is a story that is still waiting to be filmed. Right now, Jill Homer's blog offers the best panorama of the Great Divide.

Epic Vermont Review

We watched this video in our spinning club. The scenery is wonderful. The production values are top-notch. I like the camera's perspective and feeling as it follows the riders through the countryside. The bike-cam is pretty cool. I also really like the heads-up-display, showing the target heart zone, %grade, and ride profile. Gives a lot of information without being distracting (way too many biking DVDs have highly animated info displays).
The music, though, is very repetitive. We lasted about 10 minutes before we turned off the DVD player's music and piped in a workout set from iTunes.

You Need No Victory to Be a Winner/ Race Across America/ RAAM
You will find no better explanation of the importance of planning the race, and racing the plan than in this film!!! Deviation that seems to deliver a positive outcome in the here and now can prove to be categorically disastrous in the end.
Dr. Nehls himself gives you the first person narration of the video as he battles the topography, the weather, fatigue and the silent voices that persistently attempt to talk him off of his bike during his 2010 RAAM solo race. He and his crew struggle through all the difficult moments and in turn, enjoy the simple splendor of the awesome scenery and a good day on the bike.
[...]
This is a very good film that is deserving of a place in your RAAM/Cycling video library.

Bike-O-Vision Cycling Journey- California's Pacific Coast Highway BLU RAY (WS #6) Review

Bike-O-Vision Cycling Journey- California's Pacific Coast Highway BLU RAY (WS #6)
Average Reviews:

Wow! This is the best video along the Pacific Coast Highway that I've ever seen, and it's in wide screen and in Blu Ray too!
The California Pacific Coast Highway is one of my favorite places to cycle and I never get tired of it and this video really makes you feel like you are there. I really get into the meditative "zone" just as I would outside. I enjoyed the music and also use my own. The previous dvd Bike-O-Vision entitled "California Coast" is also excellent as a companion to this one and I watch it regularly as well. I have all the bike-o-vision dvds.
As an avid cyclist these videos are definitely the next best thing going when you cycle indoors. I'm not fond of the videos with voice instruction or graphics covering my views of the scenery so these videos are for me. If you're looking for lots of instruction on a video this video is not for you. I highly recommend this video.

There's so much unforgettably beautiful scenery along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and YOU are about to ride through it! Cycle around Guadalupe's cinematic pink sand dunes. Enjoy rugged Mendocino county with its foggy coves and wooded, green headlands. Go by Hearst Castle and beached elephant seals in pristine San Simeon. The highway is especially breathtaking south of Carmel- in fact you'll see the very best of Big Sur, including Pfeiffer Falls! With completely different footage than the popular California Coast DVD, this is a must-add to your Bike-O-Vision collection. 2 hours in length. Blu-Ray.

Race Across America Review

Race Across America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Somewhere in the darkness of a person's existence they confront what scares them, what unnerves them, what makes them wonder about their very next step. This is what Race Across America captures by its essence. Whether you ride long distances or not, heck, even if you haven't ridden a bike in 20 years, buy this film. It embodies the deeper struggle of our human existence as we strive, struggle and learn from our failures. Sports are a great metaphor for life at large, the greatest of these are endurance sports, with Race Across America taking you into a greater understanding of what it means to reach for the brass ring, no matter how big, no matter how small. In this film we see ourselves in the personalities (riders and crew) as they endeavor to persevere in something so engaging that it tips the scales of common sense into the abyss. As I said, it's just like life. So if you don't learn something about yourself and about life by simply watching this film, well, you need to do it again because you weren't paying attention. Life changes in a heartbeat, in one moment you think all is lost, that perseverence is not to be had, then, in a moment, something happens. The tailwind of good news or encouragement comes along and your legs are fresher, your energy restored and you find the courage to dig deep...to go one more mile. This is what is embodied by Race Across America and its creator Stephen Auerbach. It is fantastic.

Magnificent 7 (2005 Tour de France 12-Hour DVD; 6 pc.) Review

Magnificent 7 (2005 Tour de France 12-Hour DVD; 6 pc.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're a cycling fanatic, you're going to buy this set anyway, but the other reviewers are correct: there are definate issues with the DVD authoring and sound mixing used for this set. The video itself is the same you would have seen on OLN or virtually anywhere else. The video is clear, except when transmission is blocked due to mountainous terrain. That's the video issue mentioned by another issue. It's not that the DVD transfer is bad or anything - it's the same as what you saw on OLN - brief interruptions and assorted glitches.
The audio is another issue. The sound mixing is bad. I found that if I kept the volume at a medium level, it wasn't bad, but the background noise is often too loud to hear the commentary very well - you hear a lot of helicopter noise, crowd noise, etc. They may have been thinking it added to the realism, but they they are wrong - it's annoying. However, it's tolerable.
On one of the discs, the bonus features menu was screwed up. The menu said it was one thing, but it was actually a repeat of a bonus item off the previous disc. That's just bad QA.
Obviously they had to pick and choose which bits of the race to show, and I think in general they did a good job of it. The race always seems exciting, and you get to see most of the major tactical moves.
The bonus features are nice, generally two extra video segments per disc, and are the sort of "behind the scenes" stories you might have seen when the race was broadcast, but it's not OLN's videos, which might be a good thing if you already saw that on OLN's coverage when the race was actually happening.
