Death Race 2000 (1975) Review

Death Race 2000 (1975)
Average Reviews:

So these are the words of Calamity Jane, a contender in Roger Corman's low budget farce, "Death Race 2000." It is interesting that Amazon paired Corman's film with Norman Jewison's "Rollerball" and for good reason: one movie is pure satire and played strictly for laughs while the latter is a far more serious and somber commentary on the media, America's love affair with violence steeped in what we call "sport," and the cult of celebrity. Both films explore these themes quite differently, yet both are entertaining as they are disturbing.
As a black comedy, "Death Race 2000" is more or less a cheaply made exploitation flick (budgeted at approximately $300,000), that never pretends for an instant to be anything more than a satire of the future and a parody of "Rollerball"--a far more ambitious, absorbing and expensive film.
Corman's film depicts a "game"--the Transcontinental Death Race--designed to cater to society's need to channel its aggression and hostile impulses as sort of a 21st century equivalent of the Roman circus offering spectators both entertainment and a catharsis in its more manic and kinetic moments.
Yes, the film is crazy--from the attack on Frankenstein by the French Air Force to Thomasina Paine (hilarious!) and her revolutionaries' thwarted attempts to assassinate "Mr. President" and end the Transcontinental Death Race once and for all. While the special effects in Corman's film are decidedly low-rent, save for some interesting matte paintings injected at the beginning of the film, the cars themselves, customized by car designer James Powers, are both creative and imaginative. The film, for the most part is amusing and very funny. The "Real Don Steele" is terrific as the commentator with one-liners that will leave you laughing.
While Carradine's "Frankenstein" looks utterly ridiculous in a plastic helmet and a vinyl body suit, a pre-Rocky, Sylvester Stallone steals the show and seems far more comfortable in the role of "Machine-Gun Joe Viturbo." Stallone would be a household name a year later with "Rocky" released in 1976. Before he assumed his US Senate seat representing his home state of Iowa, a bespectacled Fred Grandy, preceding his "Love Boat" debut on ABC, also manages some laughs as "Herman the German."

This DVD release with its extras and commentary is a vast improvement over the Digital Multimedia release that looks like it was pirated-off someone's VHS copy recorded in EP mode. For Corman fans, this would appear to be the release to shoot for. And according to IMBD, Corman is presently working on a big budgeted sequel due out sometime in 2008.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) Review

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this British film when it first came out in 1962 and never forgot it. I even remember an argument I had with my aunt about its controversial theme - that of an alienated angry young man who defiantly refuses to conform to the system. Shot in black and white, the video stars Tom Courtenay as a working class Nottingham youth who is sent to a reformatory because of a robbery. Michael Redgrave is cast as the warden, referred to as the "governor" as this is a British film. It is a modern reformatory, and plans are being made to for it to compete in sports with a private school. The long distance run is considered the biggest prize and Courtenay is granted special privileges as he stands out as someone who could actually win. He's allowed to take long runs outside of the reformatory gates each day, and the cinematography here is outstanding. During these runs, Courtenay experiences flashbacks of his life and we see a picture of its grimness. We see his anger at the system and admire him for belief in his ideals. And yet we also want him to win the race and move into a more privileged life. Finally the day of the run arrives. And young Courtenay makes his decision. It is startling and yet something we can understand. No wonder it's haunted me all these years.
Now, watching the video all these years later, I found it a little slow for my taste, especially since I already knew the ending. And, also, as with many British films on video, I sometimes wish there were subtitles. But this is a film that makes me think. I think about choices I've made in my own life. I think about how they turned out. And I think about the message of the film - still fresh after all this time. Recommended.

Original Fabulous Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Review

Original Fabulous Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The strong use of colour in this film - sometimes vivid, sometimes very fine & subtle - predates & goes beyond most western psychedelic film experiments (It was made in 1961) : A large measure of this is due to the inventive & frequent use of monochrome - eg orange sequences, then blue, then red etc - akin to but generally surpassing such techniques in early cinema (Melies was one of Zeman's heroes). "Baron Munchausen" goes beyond the methods of both early film & later experimentation not primarily because of its technical skill - exact & inventive though it is - but because of the combination of this with the poetic depth of the film in general. There are also sequences where the screen is subtly divided into different swathes of colour ( again a technique reminiscent of Melies ).
However the film is not some sort of delerious dream or descent into madness (although it does have lots of fun!). Nor is it in any way "amateurish" ( as has been suggested in a well-meant sort of way, elsewhere ) - Such a term can only be used if one takes the hollow slickness which is present in so many Hollywood films as some sort of yardstick of definition.
Zeman's "Baron Prasil" exists in a totally different sort of Universe : It is essentially - & completely - romantic, graceful & poetic (as well as being full of a warm & gentle humour - & also containing strong antiwar sentiments; a recurring theme in Zeman's work). The flowing & exact pace of the film brings forth a world of love, beauty, imagination & adventure.
Imagination is the key : The character of the Baron is no longer the Baron of other versions : ie he is not (or at least is only occasionally) an endearing but mainly vainglorious braggart; instead his function is to effortlesly display the sheer beauty & magnificence of fantastical dreaming when its motivation comes from a heart of gold.
His chivalry (although gently satirized in places) is genuine. Impeccably played by Milos Kopecky he is in effect a spiritual guide to the protaganist ("Joey" - Tony in the Czech language original) - introducing him to the underlieing spiritual beauty of life & honing his ability to love, dream & create. Even when he (the Baron) is undercut by events, his indomitable, expansive & generally self-composed reactions are an education in courage & spiritual freedom.

Many more things could be said about the film : The complete harmony achieved by Zeman's use of mixed media animation ( the Gustave Dore inspired storybook-type drawings which are used as backdrops for live actors, a puppet whale of incredible charm, popart-style spacesuits, etc), the graceful presence of Jana Brejchova as the Princess Bianca di Castello Negro, the warmth & perfection of Zdenek Liska's opening theme & his other soundtrack music - to mention just some.

Terry Gilliam is known to have been influenced by Zeman; what perhaps isn't realised is that if you view Zeman's "Baron Munchausen" & Zeman's films "A Jester's Tale" (1964) & "The Stolen Balloon" (1966) (all very wonderful films) - together these contain most of the styles of animation to be seen in Monty Python (although the satirical content is not generally the same) - as well as many other additional techniques. "The Stolen Balloon" even contains a Souza-type march very similar (though not identical) to that used in the Python theme! I hope this doesn't sound too unkind as Gilliam is a brilliant bloke & without his version of "Baron Munchausen" perhaps Zeman's version might never have got a video release.
Also : Relatively huge critical attention is given to directors like Godard & Kurosawa ( & in a different sort of way to Ray Harryhausen films ) - If even part of this were given to the work of Karel Zeman, then his genuinely romantic film art - & incredible entertainment - might become more readily available to all who are open to such wonders.
( It would also be nice if Jiri Trnka - & others - were likewise to receive such increased critical attention. )

To conclude : This film is perfection - (& if anyone can re-release this video or any & all of Zeman's films; Please, please do). With reference to it on video : It would be still better if a subtitled version were available - as the fine acting is also evident in the subtle tones & inflections of the original cast; more so than with most foriegn films.
This is particularly true of the title role: Kopecky's voice is an integral part of his characterization ( as described above ). Having said this - the dubbing in the present version is actually quite reasonable.

This is spiritual-romantic art at its best : It is a fairytale fully imbued with the poetic spirit. Its values of love & warmth are similar to - though as art it is in other ways quite different from - the original Winnie-the-pooh books or the animation work of Oliver Postgate & Peter Firmin in the U.K.
As you have probably realised by now - it is my alltime favourite film! And as such I cannot recommend it too highly.

Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) Review

Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 1988 movie, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas, has good acting from Jeff Bridges, Martin Landau, Frederic Forrest, and Joan Allen in the larger roles. Smaller supporting roles were also handled well by Christian Slater, Jay O. Sanders, Nina Siemaszko and Mako.
As reflected by the DVD cover, the movie is filmed in a splashy 1940's advertising style, and uses warm gold and sepia tones and some impressive camera work to tell the tale of the development of the "Tucker 48" automobile, also known as the "Torpedo" after its sleek lines (for the times), of which only about 50 were made. For its time, it had many innovative features, including a rear-mounted engine, seat belts and padded dash, push button controls, and a third central headlight that would turn when steering. The large, 4,800 pound behemoth got about 20 MPH.
In a somewhat dichotomous framework, the movie shows the result of American "Yankee ingenuity" coupled with the eventual demise of the Tucker due to pressure by the Big Three automaking competitors. Taken to court for fraud with the accusation that he would not deliver on the promise of producing a car, Tucker in fact is found not guilty, and had actually produced about 50 cars, though his business was effective ruined.
Tucker had other successes however. Just before World War II, he developed an armored car that was so fast at 80-plus MPH, the Army did not want it because they thought such vehicles should only go about 35 MPH. However, the rotating gun-turret used on top of the vehicle, the "Tucker turret", was used on American bombers, such as the B-17 and B-24, thoughout the war.
Although his business partner Abe Karatz (Landau) is quite upset that the car business folded, Tucker tells him..."It's the idea that counts, Abe, and the dream." Tucker died in 1956 from lung cancer at age 53.
The reasonably-priced DVD has the wide-screen movie, an excellent original 15-minute long 1948 promotional film made by the Tucker company (with or without commentary by FFC), a mediocre short "making of" collection of cast/crew interview clips mostly from 1988, a decent commentary by FFC, and the usual setup features.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa - The Final: Netherlands vs. Spain Review

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa - The Final: Netherlands vs. Spain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The World Cup Final in it's entirety. Re-live every moment of Spain's thrilling victory in extra time. A must-have for any Spanish soccer fan - or any true fan of the beautiful game.
About the DVD:
The DVD opens with a few minutes of the closing ceremonies that took place before the match. Shakira and a few others were featured. Nicely done. For the game itself, I believe they kept the UK commentators on board, and they did a good job of commenting on the action. They keep the time on the top left of the screen during the entire match, which I was pleasantly surprised about. And of course, they included the trophy presentation and a few-postgame interviews from the coaches. Although I still can't figure out why they dubbed an English translation over the coaches' native languages at the same time and volume. Turns it into a garbled mess and you can't understand a thing.
The video quality -- as i stated in another review from a similar DVD, if you are watching this on a regular tube TV, then you won't be disappointed. Looks awesome. I watched this on my folks' Sony XBR tube from the mid-90's, and the image was sharp, clear, the color were vibrant. If you're like me, however, and you want to watch this on a HDTV, then you'll probably have to deal with all the usual issues of watching a DVD on an HDTV. Noise, image softness, some distortion.
PLEASE MAKE THE BLU-RAY VERSION OF THIS THING!

Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XV (The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy / The Girl in Lovers Lane / Zombie Nightmare / Racket Girls) (1994) Review

Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XV (The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy / The Girl in Lovers Lane / Zombie Nightmare / Racket Girls) (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume XV from Shout! Factory will include two Joel hosted episodes and two Mike hosted episodes, all from the Comedy Channel/Comedy Central period of the show.
102- THE ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY (with short: COMMANDO CODY AND THE RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON Pt. 1)
La Momia azteca contra el robot humano was made in Mexico and was released in the US in 1959. From the grade Z costumes, acting and special effects to the mediocre dubbing, this film is perfect fodder for MST3K. If you've always wanted to see a poorly costumed mummy battle a cardboard box style robot, this is your film. This episode also features the beginning of Radar Men From The Moon, which was one of the best things about Season One MST3K. Hilarious!
509- THE GIRL IN LOVER'S LANE
This 1959 black-and-white film features Joyce Meadows and a very young Jack Elam. The film is a hackneyed story about troubled teens from broken and problem homes, but the acting is not actually that bad and it's engaging enough to really irk you when you get to the incredibly depressing outcome of this film. Even the final sketch of the show focuses on the noxious ending of the film. Still, if you focus on the jokes from the MST3K crew then you can get through it and the mostly one-dimensional and unimaginative writing make for some amusing jokes through most of the film.
604- ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE
This terribly cheap and amateurish "horror" movie from 1986 stars Adam West. The scariest thing in this movie is the scene where the kid in his white underwear leaves a hot tub. Hilariously bad teen horror that works extremely well for MST3K. Zombie Nightmare is the only color film in this DVD set. This is a strong episode from the post-Joel era of the show.
616- RACKET GIRLS (with short: ARE YOU READY FOR MARRIAGE?)
This 1951 film is about a guy who runs a women's wrestling league as a front for all manner of illegal rackets. The film has a very "Ed Wood" quality to it. The movie and especially the short, Are You Ready For Marriage?, both work extremely well for the show.
Extras features include:
* Glimpses of KTMA (when the show was on a local channel in Minneapolis before it appeared on The Comedy Channel)
* The Design And Speculative Technology Of MST3K: Joel Hodgson And Trace Beaulieu Visit M.I.T.
* New Interviews with "Zombie Nightmare" stars Frank Dietz, Jon Mikl Thor and John Fasano.
* Kevin Murphy And Trace Beaulieu in a Sneak Peek of the upcoming independent feature film Hamlet A.D.D.
* Trailers/promos
* 4 limited edition mini-posters

Of all the season review dvs's, this is by far the worst. This season review should have been a celebration of the 19th title, instead the producer has tried to show what he can do with editing. All the goals are filmed in strange angles and the commentary is from manutd.com
If I could give this 1/2 stars, I would.
