Not just for this video, but for the whole Advanced Trainings DVD series (own them all and attended the seminars), they are a wealth of knowledge and a fantastic approach to MFR techniques. All techniques are instructed by Advanced Certified Rolfers in a simple and concise way. If you are looking to improve your bodywork techniques with better results to follow, this is a great place to start. The Advanced Trainings crew have given me a completely brand new and broader sense of bodywork and it's possibilities. I am forever grateful.

Fire in Babylon (2010) Review

Fire in Babylon (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a wonderful documentary portraying the world of West Indian Cricket, through the prism of colonialism. The great CLR James wrote a a masterpiece called Beyond A Boundary ,in which he attempted to do the very same thing. This movie begins with the era of Independence in the Carribean ,the great former players{ Garfield Sobers being the greatest] and the formation of the West Indian squads. After a humiliating test in 1975 and 1976 against Australia in which the Batters were intimidated and injured by the furious style of the Aussie bowlers[not to mention the horrific racist epithets and virulent disgusting racist taunting from the crowd] the West Indian team went in search of a new model. The found one. They began to play hard fast cricket, bowling at incredible speeds, using the same intimidating tactics that was used against them. The two huge highlights are the tests against England, where the former colonial masters are humiliated beyond description, and then revenge down under where the Aussies were whipped at their own game, and the Great Viv Richards dominated. Interspersed throughout are interviews withe the players, commentary from Bunny Wailer, gorgeous beats from Bob Marley and Burning Spear among others and great highlights. As sociology,as politics, as humanity unfolding, and a downtrodden people regaining their rightful place,as a genuine new west Indian culture erupting, as sport and as sheer fun, this is a great film. HUgely recommended for everyone.Wonderful!

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection (2003) Review

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Animation legend Chuck Jones had a mythic set of ground rules for his ingenious Road Runner series: the setting was always the desert, the characters never spoke, the Road Runner never left the road, the Coyote never caught the Road Runner, etc. A similar set of rules seems at work in THE GOLDEN COLLECTION introductory DVD presentation of Warner Bros. animated shorts. Here is the breakdown:
1. The majority of the fifty-six motion pictures included are artistically valuable and the collection as a whole is a sheer delight which belongs in the library of anyone who loves classic cartoons. The set includes such masterpieces and popular favorites as "Duck Amuck", "Bully for Bugs", "Deduce You Say", "Fast and Furry-ous", "Long-Haired Hare", "Rabbit of Seville", "Rabbit Fire", "Rabbit Seasoning", "The Scarlet Pumpernickel", "Wabbit Twouble" and "Duck Dodgers in the 24-1/2 Century". All the films, even the weakest, deserve preservation, restoration and DVD availability.
2. The selection of complete shorts spans two decades (1940-59), according to year of initial theatrical release. This means that the heyday of Porky Pig (1936-39) is excluded, along with the historic Harman-Ising period (1930-33) and such early characters as Bosko, Buddy and Foxy. On the other hand, the set is also free of material from the Warner cartoon studio's years of decline (1960-64) and decay (1965-69).
3. Within the 1940-59 span is an intensive focus on the six-year "middle" period 1948-53, when the Warner cartoons were at their technical zenith. Fully half of the films in the collection were released during the three peak years of 1949-51 (ten in 1950 alone). The high degree of concentration allows for appreciation of the studio output of a particular era, lent contrast and variety by the broader context.
4. The star of the show is unquestionably Bugs Bunny, with twenty-one cartoons. There is an adequate amount, for a starter set, of Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Sylvester & Tweety. Key films of the Road Runner, Pepé Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn and Speedy Gonzales are duly included. Important supporting characters like Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam and Marvin the Martian are well-represented, and the Tasmanian Devil makes a token appearance. The bill is rounded out with a few one-shots and curios.
5. The individual directors at Warner's animation studio are as notable as its character stars. A full twenty-five of the films (almost half) are by superstar director Chuck Jones (and written by Michael Maltese). Most of the rest are directed by Friz Freling, with several by Robert McKimson and one by Arthur Davis. Only three films are directed by the great Bob Clampett.
6. There are no films directed by the legendary Tex Avery, who departed the studio in the early 1940's, or the influential stylist Frank Tashlin.
7. Most cartoons are voiced by the amazing Mel Blanc.
8. All cartoons are scored by Music Director Carl W. Stalling or his immediate successor.
9. Most notable of the anomalies is the poor showing of the ultra-popular (and ultra-"violent") Road Runner, with only one episode (albeit his debut); while tired old Foghorn Leghorn encores with an undistinguished late episode -- rather than, say, "The High and the Flighty", his memorable pairing with Daffy Duck. In keeping with Rule #6, Avery's Oscar-nominated classic "A Wild Hare" (1940), the first "true" Bugs Bunny cartoon, is supplanted by Jones' "Elmer's Candid Camera", a rare prototype from earlier that year which features the debut of Elmer Fudd and the still-evolving Wascal Wabbit. And the extras, in their mania for completeness, include the animated excerpts from the feature films TWO GUYS FROM TEXAS and MY DREAM IS YOURS twice each, but only one version is digitally restored.
10. Not all of these Golden Era cartoons are masterpieces or true classics, but the less exceptional films included represent the high standard against which the extraordinary stand out. A technically crude quota quickie like McKimson's "Rabbit's Kin" shines because voice artist Stan Freburg's endearingly dumb Pete Puma character is memorable. A couple of genuine duds (Davis' "Porky Chops", for instance) have been thrown in for good measure, and even these serve to offset the overall excellence of the remainder.
11. Organization is minimal, with most of the Bugs Bunny material on Disc One, Daffy and Porky on Disc Two, and the others in an "All-Star" free-for-all on Discs Three and Four. The cartoons are presented in seemingly random order, but this very randomness is exactly how audiences experienced them both in theaters and on television.
12. The hours of extras are an embarrassment of riches.
13. Such beloved masterpieces as "Beanstalk Bunny", "Duck, Rabbit, Duck!", "Robin Hood Daffy", "The Singing Sword", "The Three Little Bops", the Oscar-Winning Rabbit's "Knighty-Knight Bugs", and (supremely) "One Froggy Evening" and "What's Opera, Doc?", have been withheld for future DVD editions. The set is designed to whet the appetite for more and leaves the grateful viewer with much to look forward to.
14. THE GOLDEN COLLECTION is worth more than its cost in dollars and is an infinitely better investment than the cheap alternate "Premiere Collection", which simply duplicates Discs Three and Four with no extras. The Premiere Collection is kiddie fodder for the undiscerning bargain-store shopper and is to be avoided by anyone concerned with art and popular culture. High sales of the vastly superior Golden Edition will determine future releases, so buy 'em up and give 'em to your friends.
CARTOONS ARE FOR EVERYONE!
Rating: 10/10 ***** EXTRAORDINARY.

All the Goals of FIFA World Cup 2006 Review

All the Goals of FIFA World Cup 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD is a great summation of the 2006 World Cup. It includes all the goals, but almost nothing else.
One of the biggest attractions of this DVD for me is hearing proper commentary by informed, skilled individuals which is far superior to the commentary we had to listen to in the U.S. during the televised matches. The other strong point is the many angles from which each goals is shown. The DVD also includes the 10 best goals and the 10 best saves.
The only weakness is that group play is a single chapter: You have to fast-forward to get to another group's goals. I was also concerned with getting my money's worth (given the relatively high price of the DVD), but I ended up watching it several times in the first couple of weeks.
Strongly recommended.

I highly recommend this DVD on feet, knees and legs. I was particularly helped by the techniques for foot and knee - they were new and interesting and I've had great results with them. Bodywork on the foot makes a huge impact on knee and low back pain, and of course on foot problems themselves, and this DVD gives you some excellent ways to make a difference.
The whole series of Advanced Myofascial Techniques DVD's is excellent (I've used several now). They are shot at actual seminars and training sessions so they include hands on demonstrations of the technique with responses from the recipient, live student questions, instructor explanations.

Although many of these techniques were familiar from massage school, this video really shows how to put them together and when it is appropriate to use them. She also goes into nice detail about which techniques to use for which issues - the video comes with a summary book that describes the disorders & associated techniques, which is a nice reference tool. I found it to be very helpful, and it gave me more confidence when I did my first event massage.
Note - if you have taken a course in sports massage, then you probably won't learn anything new from this, but if you are new to it, then it is a good introduction.

Five Animal Sports Qigong (YMAA chi kung) DVD Review

Five Animal Sports Qigong (YMAA chi kung) DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting literally for years for this disc to come out! I was very pleased with the outcome of all of Dr. Yang's efforts. The disc is well produced, with almost too much information, if that's even possible!? This is what has been missing from all other videos in the world teaching this very ancient form of Qi Gong...... proper instruction! Dr. Yang imparts quite a lot of detailed information on relaxation, mood, beathing, and even a large section taught by one of his students on the relationship of the 5 Animals to the 5 Elements in Chinese medical theory and which organs they affect. The 5 sounds for the 5 organs are introduced as well. It's absolutely a wonderful disc if for only the information alone! The disc is well over two hours long, so the instruction is more than enough.
However, on the down side, this particular version of Hua Tuo's exercise is not for the absolute beginner. It is one of the most physical versions of this Qi Gong. Without some background in some form of martial art, or at least Tai Ji Quan, I think it might be difficult for a beginner to grasp the physical movements without a lot of effort. This style is very martial in character.
The other major drawback with this version of the 5 Animal Play is that it does require a fair amount of space in order to perform it. So plan on doing one repetition of each move each way in your small kitchen or living room. Luckily this disc came out in the spring so that you can learn the whole form outside, then alter it for the winter months to make it more do-able indoors if you have a small living space like I do.
To sum things up, I couldn't recommend this disc enough! Dr. Yang's teaching style is very warm and personal. After just one viewing you will know so much about Qi Gong and Chinese medicine that you'll be the center of attention at your next party! Just be sure to dress as your favorite animal....the monkey maybe?

Dirt Riding Skills for Dual Sport and Adventure Riders (DVD) Review

Dirt Riding Skills for Dual Sport and Adventure Riders (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am in my late 40's and after a 17-year hiatus have just returned to motorcycling. After riding on the street for a few months, I've become interested in dual sport or adventure riding, but I have never been riding off road, at least on purpose. While the best way to learn is to do, I thought that before I am ready to start buying a whole new set of bike and gear, I would like to see just what kinds of skills are needed and how they they are different from street riding. Hence I've been looking for instructional DVDs and looking at things on the net quite a bit. Most videos that I've found so far are really aimed at motocross (DVD - MOTO Fundamentals -), where riding fast is the major concern. The kinds of skills needed on the fast MX track - a relatively homogenous surface when compared to what might be found outside of the track - while similar, are not quite what I've been looking for, and are a little more advanced and specialized for where I'm at right now, and things like The MSF Dirtbike School are a bit too basic.
This DVD is an excellent source for the beginning off-road rider, but it is not a one-stop shop. It is clearly meant as a supplement (or marketing tool, if you wish to be more cynical) to Carl Adams' book The Essential Guide to Dual Sport Motorcycling: Everything You Need to Buy, Ride, and Enjoy the World's Most Versatile Motorcycles. [At this writing, I have not yet seen the book, although it is on order.] The DVD has no information on selecting gear, motorcycles, advice or stories about your chosen hobby - and refers you frequently to look at the relevant sections of the book for such information (as an aside, most of the MX DVDs do not discuss these either). The DVD instead focuses on basic techniques, using example, complete with slow motion analysis, and suggested practice exercises. It starts with basic control usage - clutch, throttle, brake, gearshift. After this, exercises are geared to working from a seated position to execute various maneuvers, using both controls and body position, and then similar exercises from a standing position, including the use of knees to adapt to terrain. One exercise focuses on reading lines and sections (interpreting the terrain) for finding the best traction. In all there are about 8 major exercises with several subsections. The DVD also comes with a small paper "field guide" to take out in the field to help you work through the exercises; I made disposable copies to take into the field. The DVD stops short of discussing how to deal with more difficult terrain, but does end with a number of examples to whet your appetite. I do wish that how surface changes the techniques introduced was looked at in depth (most of the exercises use a smooth, flat dirt track), but this information may be in the book. After viewing, though, I found myself wishing for a little more. Despite this, I think the DVD is a great vicarious introduction to the skills and experience of dual sport adventure riding.
To sum up:
Pros: a good introduction to technique for the novice dirt rider, with excellent examples and practice suggestions
Cons: not a complete everything you need to know, if that's what you are looking for - read the book!

Sports Night: The Complete Series 10th Anniversary Edition Review

Sports Night: The Complete Series 10th Anniversary Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[I rate it 4.5 stars.]
"Sports Night" is about an eponymous fictitious hour sports news show on the fictitious Continental Sports Channel. It's a sit-com targeted at an audience who knows what "eponymous" means without consulting a dictionary. But this comedy isn't really about sports at all. It's about intelligent, articulate people who use humor to relieve the pressures that their demanding jobs entail.
Aaron Sorkin is the creator of "Sports Night". He also created "The West Wing" a year later, and when he realized that it was a lot easier selling viewers a fictitious White House administration than a fictitious sports news crew, he dropped "Sports Night" like a hot potato. Most everyone knows that "The West Wing" isn't really about Washington politics; instead it's about intelligent, articulate people who use humor to relieve the pressures that their demanding jobs entail. But few people have even heard of "Sports Night". It's a shame, though, because "Sports Night" may be the funniest show you never watched.
There are plenty of valid criticisms of "Sports Night". For supposedly intelligent people the characters adopt a large number of unreasonable prejudices. These are all politically correct prejudices, of course. In the world of "Sports Night" when a homeless man flicks open a switchblade he's only cutting a sandwich to share. Aaron Sorkin certainly has trouble writing multiple character voices. Without seeing which characters recite which lines you'd be hard pressed to match characters with dialog from a script; the phrasing and delivery are largely interchangeable. And fully half of the humor of "Sports Night" comes from a predictable formula of repetition. Here's my pastiche of a "Sports Night" dialog:
A: "We need to talk."
B: "Is it about X? Because I'm tired of talking about X. We can talk about anything you want, as long as it's not about X."
A: "OK, then."
B: "It's not about X?"
A: "It's not about X."
B: "OK, then."
A: "It's about X."
B: "I've got to tell you, if I could make your head explode using only the power of my mind, they'd never get the stain out of the carpet."
"Sports Night" in its 2-year run won quite a lot of awards, but none of them were from the writing. It's good that there's still a lot of comic meat left after you strip away the repetition schtick, and much of that comes from the talented cast: Josh Charles (who got his start in John Waters's "Hairspray), Peter Krause (now in "Six Feet Under"), Felicity Huffman ("Out of Order"), Joshua Malina (who followed Sorkin to "The West Wing"), Sabrina Lloyd ("Sliders"), and Robert Guillaume ("Benson"). But the most significant people on "Sports Night" weren't the writers or actors, but rather the impressive crew behind the cameras. Here are just the award "Sports Night" won (skipping the 22 other nominations):
1999 DGA Award, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series: Thomas Schlamme
1999 Emmy Award, Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Series: Janet Ashikaga
1999 Emmy Award, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series: Thomas Schlamme
1999 Humanitas Prize, 30 Minute Category
1999 Television Critics Association Awards, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy
2000 DGA Award, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series: Thomas Schlamme
2000 Emmy Award, Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series: Peter Smokler
2000 Genesis Award, Television - New Series
2000 PGA Golden Laurel Nova Award, Most Promising Producer in Television: Aaron Sorkin
2000 TV Guide Award, Best Show You're Not Watching
Do you remember the first episode of "ER"? This was ground-breaking television; it pulled you into the story by its technique of using moving cameras to record an action-packed scene in a single continuous piece rather than assemble lots of short cuts together. It's not surprising that Thomas Schlamme directed several episodes of "ER" before bringing this technique to "Sports Night". Continuous action is very expensive to shoot as it requires the sets to be contiguous, the lighting to be in place for all the places the camera will move to, and most importantly all the actors and camera and sound people have to avoid mistakes for the duration of the scene. But the payoff is a superior viewing experience. This show really delivered.
I could go on about the great recurring guest cast, with people like Teri Polo, Brenda Strong, William H. Macy, and Jayne Brook. Or the great music that ends most every episode. I could tell you that you'll be disappointed by the extras on the DVD collection (none at all). Or that Sorkin bowed to network pressure and added a laugh track for about half the first season before it became clear that the viewers were people who didn't need a laugh track to get the jokes. But the most important thing I can tell you is that you really should check out "Sports Night". Despite its several flaws it got many things right. "Sports Night" is good entertainment.

With breakout and memorable performances by Josh Charles (In Treatment), Robert Guillaume (Benson), Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), Sabrina Lloyd (Sliders) and Joshua Malina (The West Wing), this was writer/producer Aaron Sorkin's (A Few Good Men , The American President) first television series. And it was director Thomas Schlamme's first collaboration with Sorkin. The pair, who would continue to click brilliantly with The West Wing and Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip, may not have known it at the time, but with Sports Night they defined a new style and raised the bar for all television programs to follow.
Critically acclaimed when it debuted on ABC in 1998, Sports Nigh was an innovative half-hour program about a team of funny, smart and likeable people who put on a daily live sports cable newscast, much like ESPN's SportsCenter. They are a group of consummate professionals whose personal lives operate in apparent chaos, communicating every uncensored thought and feeling through a libretto of witty and honest chatter over the hum of the separate-but-integrated live show-within-the-show. 10th Anniversary Special Features: *The Show: An in-depth look back at Sports Night with creator/writer Aaron Sorkin, directors Thomas Schlamme and Robert Berlinger, cast members Felicity Huffman, Peter Krause, Josh Charles, Joshua Malina, and Robert Guillaume, Emmy(r) award-winning editor Janet Ashikaga, Emmy(r) award-winning director of photography Peter Smokler, producer John Amodeo, and set designer Thomas Azzari.Includes never-before-seen behind-the-scenes home movies shot by John Amodeo. *Face Off: ESPN's SportsCenter vs. CSC's Sports Night - Sports Night's real-life ESPN counterparts discuss what the series got right and wrong. *A Conversation with Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme *Inside The Locker Room - A look at the innovations of Sports Night with Aaron Sorkin, Thomas Schlamme, Robert Berlinger, Janet Ashikaga, Peter Smokler, John Amodeo, and Thomas Azzari. *Season Gag Reels *8 Episode Commentaries including creator/writer Aaron Sorkin, director/executive producer Thomas Schlamme, director Robert Berlinger, editor Janet Ashikaga, and cast members Peter Krause, Josh Charles, Joshua Malina, Sabrina Lloyd, Greg Baker, Kayla Blake, Timothy Davis-Reed, and Ron Ostrow. *Original Promos *36-Page Booklet including an introduction by creator Aaron Sorkin
