Dogtown & Z-Boys (Spanish) (Sub) (2001) Review

Dogtown and Z-Boys (Spanish) (Sub) (2001)

When I first heard about this movie, back when it was debuting at Sundance, I couldn't wait to see it. When it did finally come to my town, I dragged my husband to it; it certainly confused him, seeing his 39 year old computer nerd wife turn into a teen age skate rat overnight!
In my mispent youth, I lived about 20 miles south of Dogtown & idolized Tony Alva. I had his magazine shots covering my walls; I memorized every issue of Skateboarder when it arrived in my mailbox. I also spent every available moment gonzoing the local hilly streets with my friends. As soon as I was old enough to get my own place, where did I move to? You guessed it, Dogtown. I don't talk much about those days now, or at least I didn't until DOGTOWN & Z-BOYS came out.
This movie is wonderful. It really captures what that time felt like, when skateboarding was still closely allied to surfing & just finding it's own identity. The archival footage is amazing, especially the P.O.P. sequence, & the early shots of the Z-Boys at Paul Revere & Bellagio. The editing is brilliant, & the music rocks! What is truly remarkable is that it manages to make skateboarding accessible & enjoyable to those who never participated, such as my husband. He's just as blown away at some of the footage as I was.
The DVD transfer is great. It's nice to be able to slow down some of the sections, or freeze a frame to get a better look, or just repeat your fave sections over & over again. The voice-over commentary by Peralta on the bonus track adds many anecdotes that had to be left out of the film, as well as giving credit to many of the people who contributed footage the documentary relies heavily on. There's also an additional, uncut film of today's Tony A during a pool session, which is nice to see.
The only reason this film doesn't get 5 stars is because of some of the people it left out. Where's Tom Inouye, of the notorious Inouye's Pool Service? When it came to outlaw pool-finding, Tom was the man! Laura Thornhill was probably the only other hard-core girl who got attention at the time; she's completely unmentioned. Although Stacy Peralta gets his props for modesty, he sometimes errs on the side of being TOO modest; there was a spectacular Arizona Pipe session I recall that goes unmentioned, one that Stacy made history at. It would have been nice to see some of that footage too.
All in all, Dogtown & Z-Boys can't be beat if you remember those days. If you're at the age where all this is new to you, it's a great way to learn where all those moves you're busting came from.
Now to dig out some OP's & Vans, & I'll be stylin' again...

Airborne (1993) Review

Airborne (1993)

Good: Well, I had to give this movie a 5 because anyone who likes Seth Green and Jack Black today, really need to see this movie. You'll see both of them in early greatness.
It's good to see the supporting roles moving on to become way more well known than any of the stars in these older films. You'll see some supporting roles in this film for years to come, such as Seth's parents and the girl he tries to impress. You'll have to watch it to see who I'm talking about.
Bad: It IS a bit dated and for lack of a better word, cheezy, (hangs head low) but it's funny and nostalgic.
Have fun watching.

Menikmati Review

Going into Menikmati the documentary feel in the beginning made me worry a bit. I've got absolutely nothing against a skating documentary but after seeing the names of the eS team members I could not wait to see their skate parts. Luckily, Menikmati doesn't disapoint. It has an overly formulaic structure of including a skater intro followed by a regular skate part and then a slow-mo section, but the skating is so amazing that it doesn't really take away from your enjoyment (although I will say that the regular motion shots included as a dvd extra were so much more entertaining than their slow-mo counterparts and I've watched that montage in regular motion again and again). Tom Penny sticks out as always. His skating and the intro to his part really caught my attention and it was great to see on the dvd extras a chance to look at penny skating from a young age and watching that progression as he developed his skating skills over the years. Highly, highly recommended!

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006) Review

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006)

I have been waiting for a documentary about Hosoi. He came after me as a skater but I think that this documentary shows the bridge from where Alva [the greatest of all time ever]and Jay Adams [the most rad skater]left off and the extention of air continued. It shows how versitile Hosoi was in adapting to the emerging street skating that left many vert skaters behind. It also shows how Tony Hawk (though supportive of Hosoi in the documentary) was really a pale version of Hosoi. It was as if Hosoi was the Jay Adams of his day and Tony Hawk was the Stacy Peralta. Sure Peralta and Hawk were able to capitalize on skating and convert it to monetary fame, but the two who really ripped in their time were Adams and Hosoi. It is a must see for skaters and those unfamiliar with the subject. It is well made and suitable for everyone. I liked it better that the Gater Rogowski documentary. There is a duality to it that enables the viewer to see the rise of this prodigious skater and his sincerity in wanting to contribute after he was released from the pen.
