Winning (1969) Review

Now and then, it can be a real pleasure to dip into the years and pull up an older movie for a night of "couch tatering." Not that this is such an "old" movie... but old enough that the differences between today's special effect dazzle and flash and 1969 are evident in pacing, dialogue, general style. Today's movies sometimes are lost in technical fireworks. This movie pleases with its simple quality of good actors who interact well with each other and stand on their own acting strength without too many fireworks.
And still, the director, James Goldstone, deserves kudos for his creativity and innovativeness throughout the movie. The opening scenes are original for 1969, beginning with a close-up of a buttery yellow dandelion, moving through clips of families and racing fans gathering together. Of note are clips at the Indianapolis race track - a scene of a misty morning at the track the day of the Indy 500, scenes of fans entering the park, race car drivers and mechanics in tense preparations, increasing adrenalin, burgeoning crowds. I have yet to attend the Indy 500, but seeing these scenes certainly made me hope that soon enough I might.
My fellow "couch taterer" and I had interesting conversations offering the male/female viewpoint on the scene of infidelity that centers the plot - the reasons behind the betrayal, if not excuses, the ramifications to all involved, including the son played by Richard Thomas, the responsibilities befalling all, the likelihood of a reuniting at movie's end.
In short, when a movie catches your imagination, makes you want to visit the place and event portrayed, and gives food for thought and discussion at its end, then this is a movie worth adding to a collection, whether one is a race fan or not.

Rendezvous (1983) Review

Rendezvous (1983)

I just picked up the DVD through the rendezvousdvd.com website, and can confirm it plays just fine on United States NTSC DVD players. The DVD cost me about 25 United States dollars, including shipping from Great Britain, and arrived about a week after I ordered it. The picture quality is really only about VHS level. But considering it was filmed very early in the morning (note all the garbage trucks!) and the camera was car-mounted, I'm not sure the original film was exactly reference quality. The DVD is widescreen and in color, but it is not anamorphic. The sound is great - very crisp and clean. If, after watching this movie, you don't want to hop in a sports car and take off, there's something wrong with you! On a dollars per minute basis, this may be one of the most expensive DVDs available, but it's worth every penny!

Formula 1 Saga 1-4 Review

This is an excellent video compilation which goes into the history and intricacies of the world of Formula 1. My only complaint is that it ends chronologically with the 1991 season. It would be nice if they make an updated or an addendum of videos that cover the seasons (cars, drivers, races, highlights, etc.) from 1992 up to the present.

SCHIZO is a stunning cinematic achievement from Kazakhstan courtesy of Gulshat Omarova who directed and co-wrote with Sergei Bodrov this story of survival in the bleak landscape of poverty in that part of the world about which we know little.
Mustafa (nicknamed Schizo by his schoolmates who find his behavior crazy) lives with mother and her boyfriend Sakura (Eduard Tabishev), a worldly guy who arranges illegal, brutal boxing matches with unemployed desperate men who are placed in a ring with 'professionals'. Schizo's mother seeks help for Schizo from a kindly doctor (who she pays in eggs and sour cream of her own making): the doctor (Viktor Sukhorukov) prescribes pills for Schizo's behavior and headache and recommends expensive test in the nearby city.
Sakura engages Schizo to ferret out 'victims' for the illegal games, offering companionship and some money to the lonely kid. At one fight a young man Ali is beaten to death and as he dies he makes Schizo promise to give his 'winning money' to his girl Zinka (Olga Landina) and his son. Schizo keeps his word and delivers the money to Zinka who lives below the poverty level in a shack outside of the tiny town. Schizo makes friends with Zinka's young son, and ultimately is forced to tell Zinka that Ali is dead. Furious at first, Zinka gradually warms to Schizo as he repeatedly brings her little gifts he buys with the money from his work with Sakura. The three finally form a semblance of family, a life Schizo has never known.
Sakura's dealings with the illegal boxing come to disaster when Schizo's alcoholic uncle, bribed to fight, actually wins, destroying the crime ring. Sakura convinces Schizo to rob a little store so that he can pay back the irate crime leaders, but as soon as the robbery is successful, Sakura denies Schizo his rightful 50%, tries to flee, but Schizo shoots the escaping Sakura, leaving Schizo now a killer but with all the stolen money as his own. How Schizo deals with this mixture of misfortune and luck and the consequences of his behavior forms the ending to this little story.
The acting is extraordinary, especially on the part of novice Oldzhas Nusupbayev as Schizo, a young actor given little dialogue but who is able to tell legions of information with his eyes. The camera work and musical scoring are as sensitively minimal and effective as is the story: the images of poverty and deserted structures left behind by the fall of the Soviet Union are mesmerizing. Highly Recommended. In Russian with English subtitles. Grady Harp, September 05

Top Gear 10: The Complete Season 10 (2009) Review

Top Gear 10: The Complete Season 10 (2009)

The product description and the other reviews give a good breakdown of why you should like Top Gear- a trio of insane presenters who'd be as at home in a sitcom as they are behind the wheel of the supercars they love.
I'll stick with the DVD itself, which is nice to have but has a few flaws.
The first flaw is that the contents aren't perfectly uncut. Most of the "news" segments that featured in eight of the ten episodes of Season 10 are missing- only two are included. Some of the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segments are also missing- specifically, rugby star Lawrence Dallagio, Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders, and comedian Keith Allen. The back of the box says, in tiny print, "For clearance reasons certain edits have been made." Presumably, to save license payments to certain carmakers and celebrities, they dropped less memorable and more Brit-centric material. However, so far as I can tell these are the only cuts; there is ample material remaining that wasn't present on the BBC America broadcasts. (And the Star in a Car bits retained include Simon Cowell and David (Doctor Who) Tennant, and the two News segments retained are pure comedy gold... so it's not a total loss.)
Other cuts include: a very short attempt to do the Cool Wall (Season 10 was shot right after a studio fire destroyed the Cool Wall and other props); the in-studio conclusion of the Silverstone Britcar race; the Stig speed-testing the Vauxhall VXR8; and other bits and pieces here and there that I can't verify based on secondhand info, not having access to the original BBC versions.
The second flaw is that there's really not much in this three-disk set besides the episodes. There's no outtakes reel. There's no information text, background on the cast, or even optional trailers. (Each disk does have auto-playing trailers for other BBC DVD sets, which you can't play voluntarily after you get to the main menu.) There's no alternate language subtitles or dub- this is strictly an English-language release for what the BBC apparently believes is a one-language-if-that-many United States. Granted, there are English subtitles, but that's pretty much the only feature.
The final flaw is minor indeed; a dearth of track skip points. The credits (front and back) are NOT separate tracks; skip the opening credits and you also skip the opening film bit, and you can't skip to the end credits, period. None of the segments has skip points partway through, so you can't queue up anywhere close to a specific point in the film- you have to start at the beginning and fast-forward through.
These minor imperfections rob Top Gear 10 of what, otherwise, should be a well-deserved fifth star. Next time, BBC, when the package says "Complete Xth Season," please give us the complete season...
... but even if you don't, I'll still buy it. Now give us 1-9 and 11-12, please.

Top Gear: The Complete Season 10 & Clarkson: Heaven & Hell (2009) Review

Top Gear: The Complete Season 10 and Clarkson: Heaven and Hell (2009)

I love Top Gear, I watched almsot all of the episodes from the first season in in 2002.
Top Gear Season 10 is very good, but the DVD isn't as good, the original airing of season 10 is better than this DVD.
The problems are:
1. News segments are non existent or missing, there is maybe only one episode with the Top Gear news.
2. The music, Top Gear season 10 had great music in the original UK airing, on the DVD all the music is replaced by a bad music probably because of copyright issues with the original music, no matter the reason, this reduces the enjoyment of the episodes.
3. Region 1 DVD, why would you make it a region 1 DVD? Should have made the DVD region free.
4. No extras as far as I can tell, there's only the show, no behind the scenes, no special commentary, nothing, it's just the show.
Imagine Jeremy Clarkson reviewing this DVD, he would point out it's flaws with no shame.
Overall Top Gear season 10 is fun to watch many times over, the cars are great, Jeremy Clarkson is hirlarious, despite the DVD flaws I'm happy I bought it because the video is in good quality and the show is really good.
I wish they will make more seasons available in DVD and hopefully the future releases will be at least as good as the original airings.

Top Gear: The Complete Season 11 (2010) Review

Top Gear: The Complete Season 11 (2010)

Yes, the Top Gear nuts are back- racing across Japan in a car v. bullet train challenge, reviving fox hunting using a fox-colored Daihatsu sports vehicle, testing which supercar is the most efficient in race conditions (the winner doing less than 5 MPG), and ruining British-German diplomatic efforts with a contest against a German auto show. If you like either cars or British humor, you will love this show- and this set.
Season 11 is of special interest for aficionados of Japanese culture, as not one but three films take place there: the aforementioned "epic race" of sports car v. Japanese public transport, the track test of the Nissan GT-R from said race, and James May using a Japanese luxury car to deliver sumo wrestlers to a tournament. For these sequences alone, in my opinion, the set is worth the money to anime fans.
THAT SAID... the same problems that existed with the Season 10 set remain. The episodes are NOT completely uncut- Top Gear Stuntman's sequences have all been left out, and other cuts may exist that I haven't found in one viewing. That said, the cuts are less egregious than the Season 10 episodes- all news segments are present and (apparently) intact, as are all Stars in a Reasonably Priced Car. Viewers of BBC America will see quite a lot they didn't before.
Skip points in the DVD set are limited to the start point of each film- none within the film segments themselves. Since some of these segments are half an hour long, that makes queueing up particular bits for friends a pain in the fundament.
Extras? Well, it has subtitles... with some serious transcription flaws. (Note: "Torque" and "talk" are not the same word, really they're not.) No "deleted scenes," no behind-the-scenes, no commentary. It's a basic two-disc set of six episodes, with the frills limited to auto-playing trailers.
The show is excellent, and it's good to have the series sets coming to the USA... but I really wish the DVD release was as good as the show being released.

Accessible to everyone and full of stunts, challenges and special segments, it's irreverent, witty, self-deprecating, inclusive and passionate. The charisma and enthusiasm of the show's presenters have helped make Top Gear a worldwide megabrand attracting a global audience over 500 million in more than 20 countries. This season's highlights include a car chase in presenter-chosen old bangers for traffic cops, a race in the French Alps against extreme skiers, a race across Japan (a Nissan car versus public transport), a cross-country fox hunt (with Jeremy as the prey), and a Brits versus German Top Gear challenge. Of course, this season includes serious car journalism too, with exhaustive road tests of the latest models, man versus machine experiments, weekly power-tests featuring the world's most exotic supercars and all the tried-and-tested Top Gear favorites also return.
