Menikmati Review

Menikmati

Going into Menikmati the documentary feel in the beginning made me worry a bit. I've got absolutely nothing against a skating documentary but after seeing the names of the eS team members I could not wait to see their skate parts. Luckily, Menikmati doesn't disapoint. It has an overly formulaic structure of including a skater intro followed by a regular skate part and then a slow-mo section, but the skating is so amazing that it doesn't really take away from your enjoyment (although I will say that the regular motion shots included as a dvd extra were so much more entertaining than their slow-mo counterparts and I've watched that montage in regular motion again and again). Tom Penny sticks out as always. His skating and the intro to his part really caught my attention and it was great to see on the dvd extras a chance to look at penny skating from a young age and watching that progression as he developed his skating skills over the years. Highly, highly recommended!

Skating Through Time: Great Performances from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Volume Two Review

Skating Through Time: Great Performances from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Volume Two
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Skating Through Time: Great Performances from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships Volume 2," hosted by Dick Button and Peggy Fleming, contains these skates:
Scott Hamilton - 1984 (Men's Singles, long program)
Tara Lipinski - 1997 (Ladies Singles, long program)
Yamaguchi & Galindo - 1989 (Pairs, long program)
Jill Trenary - 1990 (Ladies Singles, long program)
Johnny Weir - 2004 (Men's Singles, long program)
Elaine Zayak - 1994 (Ladies Singles, long program)
O'Connor & Millins - 1976 (Dance, long program)
Michelle Kwan - 1998 (Ladies Singles, long program)
Kitty & Peter Carruthers - 1980 (Pairs, long program)
Paul Wylie - 1990 (Men's Singles, long program)
Janet Lynn - 1970 (Ladies Singles, long program)
Worth the price of admission for Michelle Kwan's sublimely delicate, tender, and airily light "Lyra Angelica" alone, which (as did her short program) brought at least two male judges to tears, and for which programs she earned a total unprecedented 15 of a possible 18 perfect 6.0 scores (7 of possible 9 in the short, 8 of a possible 9 in the long program). And this would be the first of her record 8 consecutive gold medals in this competition.
The videos are as good as can be expected for the times they were made, and as the technology evolved.

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006) Review

Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006)
Average Reviews:

I have been waiting for a documentary about Hosoi. He came after me as a skater but I think that this documentary shows the bridge from where Alva [the greatest of all time ever]and Jay Adams [the most rad skater]left off and the extention of air continued. It shows how versitile Hosoi was in adapting to the emerging street skating that left many vert skaters behind. It also shows how Tony Hawk (though supportive of Hosoi in the documentary) was really a pale version of Hosoi. It was as if Hosoi was the Jay Adams of his day and Tony Hawk was the Stacy Peralta. Sure Peralta and Hawk were able to capitalize on skating and convert it to monetary fame, but the two who really ripped in their time were Adams and Hosoi. It is a must see for skaters and those unfamiliar with the subject. It is well made and suitable for everyone. I liked it better that the Gater Rogowski documentary. There is a duality to it that enables the viewer to see the rise of this prodigious skater and his sincerity in wanting to contribute after he was released from the pen.

Skating Through Time Volume 1: Great Performances From the US Figure Skating Championships Review

Skating Through Time Volume 1: Great Performances From the US Figure Skating Championships
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have all three volumes of this series so my reviews of them are all the same and pretty generalized. The series presents performances by the really well-known and, "who?" skaters from US Nationals over the years. They are a mixed bag. I found myself in rapt attention with a number of them and others I either thought, "that's nice, we'll call....NEXT!", and a few did not get viewed because I didn't like the skater when they were on the scene and really didn't care about them. Interesting things to note, Dick Button is rather quiet in the early year clips and you can track his increase in verbosity if you play the clips in order of their years. Another, the decline of artistry and edge work as the years go on. The DVDs have a very easy menu format in which the individual skater's tracks come up as a list when you start the DVD so you can pick and choose your own order, rather than having to use the "menu" button constantly. It's not a bad set to own and doesn't bore with repeated viewings so, in the end, I recommend buying it.

Laura Stamm's Power Skating DVD Review

Laura Stamm's Power Skating DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The price tag for this DVD is a little steep but worth every penny! I have other "how to do it" DVD's on hockey skating, and they are pretty good but not in the same league with this one. Laura's book, together with this DVD cover everything you need to know. Doesn't matter if you are using it to teach yourself, or somebody else she very effectively covers this complicated issue in a clear, easy way to understand. Even if you are already a good skater and want to improve your game...this is it.
So...why did I get this DVD? I am teaching my 9 yr. old to play hockey. I have never coached before and wanted a 'bible' to use as refrence so I bought Laura's accompanying book (same title). The book is a wee bit 'dry' and difficult to use with a kid. Getting the DVD was the best thing I could have done to help him understand what it takes to become an accomplished and powerful skater. The skaters who demonstrate the basic techniques on the DVD are perfect for showing what to do and what not to do.
Parents, coaches and players...get this book. You will not be sorry!
