I give this DVD set 3 stars because having these performances available on DVD at all is nice to have. However, I don't think these DVDs are very well executed. Here are some of the reasons:
-- There's no menu that will allow the viewer to select the specific performance they want to see; instead, the viewer will have to rely on fast forwarding.
-- There seems to be no logical order of the performances. They're not organized chronologically, by men's, ladies' or pairs.
-- There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to who's included in these DVDs. By this I mean they've included performances of skaters who did NOT win gold medals such as Janet Lynn, Debi Thomas, Midori Ito, which is fine except that it is glaringly obvious that they omitted some of figure skating's most beautiful performers such as Linda Frantianne, Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan, and Sasha Cohen. In contrast to this, they've included both the long and short programs of Sarah Hughes who I think is the least decorated skater in terms of earning 1st place in other major competitions and is also the least beautiful skater to watch.
-- Video clips do not seem to have smooth transitions from one performance to another. At times it looks as though the film clips were just spliced together hap hazardly as if the film pieces broke and were reconnected.
In summary, I am glad to have these performances available on DVD but am particularly disappointed in not seeing some of figure skating's most beautiful skaters featured on this set.

Skating Through Time Volume 1: Great Performances From the US Figure Skating Championships Review

Skating Through Time Volume 1: Great Performances From the US Figure Skating Championships

I have all three volumes of this series so my reviews of them are all the same and pretty generalized. The series presents performances by the really well-known and, "who?" skaters from US Nationals over the years. They are a mixed bag. I found myself in rapt attention with a number of them and others I either thought, "that's nice, we'll call....NEXT!", and a few did not get viewed because I didn't like the skater when they were on the scene and really didn't care about them. Interesting things to note, Dick Button is rather quiet in the early year clips and you can track his increase in verbosity if you play the clips in order of their years. Another, the decline of artistry and edge work as the years go on. The DVDs have a very easy menu format in which the individual skater's tracks come up as a list when you start the DVD so you can pick and choose your own order, rather than having to use the "menu" button constantly. It's not a bad set to own and doesn't bore with repeated viewings so, in the end, I recommend buying it.
