NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (1998) Review

NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (1998)
Average Reviews:

This is a great video to have, every NHL fan should go out and order it. It features in-depth stories on the great goalies of today such as Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, and Joseph. It also talks a bit about Billy Smith, Jacques Plante, Bernie Parent, and other goalies of yesteryear. The one major problem with the video is that it was too short, only about fifty minutes, and dedicated a lot of time to the goalies' personal lives instead of saves.

Heaven - New Jersey Devils 1995 Stanley Cup Champions Review

Heaven - New Jersey Devils 1995 Stanley Cup Champions
Average Reviews:

In perhaps what is the finest example of hockey ever captured on film, this documentary follows the New Jersey Devils through their drive to the Stanley Cup in 1995. Film has many highlights of the Devils' playoff series against Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and then the Detroit Red Wings for hockey's most coveted prize the Stanley Cup. There are also many off ice interviews with players, coaches, fans and others that will give the viewer a few interesting side notes. This movie is a true classic in its depiction of the underdog Devils coming through the playoff series and sweeping the heavily favored Red Wings in the Finals. This film is a great piece of hockey history. Well done movie, as with most good movies, look for many more sequels to be released in the coming years.

The Best of Bobby Orr Review

The Best of Bobby Orr
Average Reviews:

WOW...this is an amazing documentary...just enough "talking heads" to keep the story moving but TONS and TONS of great action footage. I think if most players in the game had ONE play as good as any of the literally couple hundred shown during this hour plus film...they's cherish it. As youngster living in Southern California during his heyday...I read about Orr in sports illustrated but seeing this footage is a revelation and I now understand why fans say he's better than Gretzky and I'd have to agree...he is just much more multi-dimensional. I don't know what is more awe inspiring...his intercepting a pass and taking it the full length to score, his throwing himself head first (without a helmet) to cover an empty net on defense or his flat out speed...this guy was ridiculous.
I purchased on Amazon Canada for under $20 ...and I think Mr Orr sells them on his site so don't pay 89 dollars..

Received this DVD for Christmas from my son.
Great gift, especially for someone who grew up in Montreal cheering for Les Habitants.
There is some interesting history on this Centennial Edition, however the quality of the the production is significantly lacking. There are 4 individual discs yet each contains significant repetition of items. It seems that the editing was done by someone preparing a web site with hypertext links - this would make sense.
I recommend this item for nostalgia but if you really want to learn about this team and its importance to Quebec and Canada, the book that accompanies the DVD is a much better source.

IT IS PACKAGED TERRIBLY! Almost all the disks were ruined when I got them. I have never seen a dvd set packaged so bad! All the disks are packed so tight and two of them didn`t even have a place to put them like a typical case would have, they were just loose in the package!

WHA Chronicles Review

Yes it was a rebel league, but you can't help loving them for challenging the stranglehold that the NHL had on professional hockey at the time. The WHA changed hockey forever. It's really hard to believe that there is so little video evidence left of the league. This 3-disc DVD set captures all the moments that are left from the rival league of the 70's. I highly recommend it to all hockey fans. It is a great historical document. I can't wait to watch it again.

Nhl Pittsburgh Penguins Greatest Games 2 Review

Having to wait almost 2 years to get the 2009 cup win on DVD totally blew. I was watching it on Hulu and watching the highlights over and over again on Youtube as well as the celebration. Luckily game 7 is on this DVD and the celebration on the ice afterward is also included! We get an interview with Mario after the Game 1 SCF Blackhawks win (coming from behind, incredibly exciting) and another come from behind victory is included, game 6 vs. Philadelphia, with Max shushing the crowd (two interviews after that one, Fleury and Crosby). The picture quality of the games is even better than Volume One, and seeing Crosby raising the Cup is priceless. I love this set! LETS GO PENS!

NHL: Washington Capitals - 10 Greatest Games Review

NHL: Washington Capitals - 10 Greatest Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As my title indicates, I am thrilled that there are finally a set for the Washington Capitals on DVD. And certainly, I cannot argue with the choices of the games such as the 87 series win against the Philadelphia Flyers, the 98 series win against the Sabres, or even the more recent game in 2009 where Ovechkin and Crosby both notched hat tricks in Capital wins. I can also understand including the Penguins game from 96, seeing as they have traditionally been a rival of the Capitals.
However, there are a couple of things about the game selection that bother me. First, two of the most memorable games from growing up as a Capitals fan were the Easter Epic 4OT game against the New York Islanders and the 4 OT game in 1996 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. I understand that these probably would not be included because these sets typically do not feature losses, but both of these games were well-played, suspense-filled games against traditional rivals. Furthermore, even if they are only including wins, why would they not include the game 6 from 1994 where the Washington Capitals eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins (especially considering how much trouble Washington had winning playoff series prior to that against the Penguins)?
This goes somewhat with my second complaint, which is that the set is tempered far more towards the Alex Ovechkin fans or newer Capitals fans. Do not get me wrong, I think he is one of the most exciting and hardest working players in the league and has managed to rekindle the interest of fans such as myself who had been less than inspired by our team's descent. However, there are 4 regular season games centered around Ovechkin or an Ovechkin led team. Why couldn't they have picked maybe 1 or 2 at most of the most significant of those games. Furthermore, while the 2-1 victory over the Rangers was certainly important historically, I would hardly call it a "greatest game" as it lacked excitement with the exception of the final 5 minutes or so of the third period (Compare it to the Isles-Caps 86 4 OT game and you will see what I mean). Finally, with all of the great players the Capitals had coming through their organization in the 80s and early 90s, it is a shame that there is only one pre-1996 game included in this set. This seems especially glaring when Rod Langway is on the back of the box, and yet would have only been in one of those games. In my opinion, they should have chosen at least 2 more games from those great 1980s teams that included players such as Scott Stevens, Larry Murphy, Rod Langway, Mike Gartner, etc.
That said, I am excited this DVD came out and have pre-ordered a copy. However, as a hockey fan, I view it more as the best of Ovechkin, with only a brief footnotes worth of games from the prior era. I wish they had included more from the past eras of the Capitals, which were unique and exciting in their own right (I would have done 3 games from the 80s, a game from the 90 playoffs or 94 elimination of Pittsburgh, the 96 game they have, the 98 game they have, and then choose 4 of the 7 Ovechkin era games they included). Hopefully this helps those who are considering whether to purchase this set.
