NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (1998) Review

NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (1998)

This is a great video to have, every NHL fan should go out and order it. It features in-depth stories on the great goalies of today such as Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, and Joseph. It also talks a bit about Billy Smith, Jacques Plante, Bernie Parent, and other goalies of yesteryear. The one major problem with the video is that it was too short, only about fifty minutes, and dedicated a lot of time to the goalies' personal lives instead of saves.

Gretzky, Indy & The WHA Review

Gretzky, Indy and The WHA

The title is misleading (The title on the DVD is actually Red, White and Blues). There is only one chapter involving Wayne Gretzky. I was expecting much more given the title. If you like hockey this is a decent movie to watch. If you are more of a Gretzky fan, the movie may dissapoint. The 1978 Oilers/Racers is a nice bonus.

When major league hockey came to Indianapolis in 1974, no one knew the sport s two greatest players would one day wear the Racers red, white and blue. But the Racers story is so much more than just a launch pad for Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier it is a time when a rebel major hockey league shook the National Hockey League to its core and changed the game forever.
The result of five years of new research, writing and production, GRETZKY, INDY & THE W.H.A. is the two-DVD box set that fans have waited for as a tribute to the wild and colorful 1970s hockey era. Journalist Timothy Gassen was there, and as writer and director he now details the only firsthand account of the Indianapolis Racers and their five-year run in the World Hockey Association.

This game was only weeks after his major league debut as a Racer (& trade to the Oilers), and only five days before the Indy franchise folded.
Also on DISC TWO is the third period of the April 4, 1978 game in Indianapolis vs. the rival Cincinnati Stingers.
THE GREAT ONE: Rare and newly found footage of WAYNE GRETZKY and his mysterious entry into major league hockey with a million dollar signing in 1978 as a 17-year-old rookie with the INDIANAPOLIS RACERS.

IT IS PACKAGED TERRIBLY! Almost all the disks were ruined when I got them. I have never seen a dvd set packaged so bad! All the disks are packed so tight and two of them didn`t even have a place to put them like a typical case would have, they were just loose in the package!

Yes it was a rebel league, but you can't help loving them for challenging the stranglehold that the NHL had on professional hockey at the time. The WHA changed hockey forever. It's really hard to believe that there is so little video evidence left of the league. This 3-disc DVD set captures all the moments that are left from the rival league of the 70's. I highly recommend it to all hockey fans. It is a great historical document. I can't wait to watch it again.
