NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (1998) Review

NHL's Masked Men - The Last Line of Defense (1998)

This is a great video to have, every NHL fan should go out and order it. It features in-depth stories on the great goalies of today such as Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, and Joseph. It also talks a bit about Billy Smith, Jacques Plante, Bernie Parent, and other goalies of yesteryear. The one major problem with the video is that it was too short, only about fifty minutes, and dedicated a lot of time to the goalies' personal lives instead of saves.

Hockey - A People's History Box Set Review

Hockey - A People's History Box Set

Wow. Just. Wow. Is the only word to describe this powerhouse CBC documentary. I am so glad I found this series when I did! If you are a hockey fan and have any historical interest in the sport and/or the country of Canada itself whatSOever, then this boxed set is for you. I can't say enough positive things about it other than the series makes me wish I had grown up in Canada. Simply outstanding.
The only negative is the publishers chose to produce the DVDs in widescreen format so if you haven't spent $$$$$$$$ on a widescreen TV, then all the images will appear vertically stretched and otherwise distorted. Bad move, CBC. Widescreen televisions are not universal just yet and probably won't be unless and until CRT screens are banned. And even then it's a big question mark. Publishing any content exclusively in a single format, especially one that is not proprietary, is always short sighted and just plain dumb.

NHL Stanley Cup Champions 2011: Boston Bruins Review

NHL Stanley Cup Champions 2011: Boston Bruins

Being a Bruins fan my WHOLE life I am very pleased (& still in shock) that the Bruins are Stanley Cup champions! With that being said I am quite happy with this DVD release. The disc starts off with a quick rundown of the beginning of the 2010-11 season leading into the playoffs which makes up the majority of the playing time. This is where my only complaint comes from as I was hoping for more coverage of the regular season but hey after all the playoffs is what matters most! You get a good variety of players, staff, announcers, & some big Boston media honchos commenting throughout & it was particularly great to hear what they had to say in the more riveting moments of the playoffs...such as being down to Montreal in the beginning of the run, the Flyers getting annihilated, Bergeron's exit & return, the exciting Tampa series, Horton's injury & that pathetic garbage talking Roberto Luongo which also helped motivate the team to capture the Cup. The extras appear to be great even though I havn't seen them yet but they include: behind the scenes w/ the Stanley cup, extended locker room celebration, extra Boston parade coverage, season/playoff top 10s & 'History Will Be Made' TV commercials. So there you have it, Bruins fans we got our LONG awaited wish...so go & buy & enjoy this piece of NHL history for many years to come!
*UPDATE* I watched the extras & the best part is definitely the Stanley Cup segments including the parade celebration. The 'History..' commercials are good (man I didn't realize how many were made for the Bs alone in this year's playoffs!) And as for the top 10s it's cool but gets old after a little while. Still all in all a good buy!

Team Canada Skills of Gold: Vol. 2 Review

Team Canada Skills of Gold: Vol. 2

I have about 20 hockey skills videos I have accumulated in the last few years, but none of them compare to this video. The video in the this 4 disc set clearly illustrate how teams should play together. The first video covers team offense and various ways a team can enter the zone and attack off the rush. It discusses when to dump and chase and explains why the second forward should drive hard to the net to force the defense back leaving the third forward open. And it discusses isolating a defender to create a 2-on-1 situation and proper puck support. The second video is all about proper defensive play - positioning and responsibilities of the defenders and the forwards. This video also illustrates proper defensive reads and plays during a breakout based on time and space. It also discusses the defender without the puck supporting a puck carrying defender (reading the situation and knowing where to be). The third video is by far the best. Covers team play. The third video is worth the price of the 4-disc set by itself. It shows how the offense and defense have to play as a unit with everyone moving up and down the ice together in a system. Covers 2-1-2 forecheck and 1-2-2 forecheck in detail=(offensive zone and neutral zone). Video clips are typically shown a couple of times to illustrate the concepts with narrator explaining what is going on. I haven't watched the 4th disc yet, but I can say that this set is worth the money. I have watched videos 1-3 at least 4 times each and continue to learn more each time I watch. Video quality is excellent and you could easily use these videos in off ice sessions with your team to show them what you are trying to teach them. If there was a 6th star I could give this video set I would.
