Dogtown & Z-Boys (Spanish) (Sub) (2001) Review

Dogtown and Z-Boys (Spanish) (Sub) (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first heard about this movie, back when it was debuting at Sundance, I couldn't wait to see it. When it did finally come to my town, I dragged my husband to it; it certainly confused him, seeing his 39 year old computer nerd wife turn into a teen age skate rat overnight!
In my mispent youth, I lived about 20 miles south of Dogtown & idolized Tony Alva. I had his magazine shots covering my walls; I memorized every issue of Skateboarder when it arrived in my mailbox. I also spent every available moment gonzoing the local hilly streets with my friends. As soon as I was old enough to get my own place, where did I move to? You guessed it, Dogtown. I don't talk much about those days now, or at least I didn't until DOGTOWN & Z-BOYS came out.
This movie is wonderful. It really captures what that time felt like, when skateboarding was still closely allied to surfing & just finding it's own identity. The archival footage is amazing, especially the P.O.P. sequence, & the early shots of the Z-Boys at Paul Revere & Bellagio. The editing is brilliant, & the music rocks! What is truly remarkable is that it manages to make skateboarding accessible & enjoyable to those who never participated, such as my husband. He's just as blown away at some of the footage as I was.
The DVD transfer is great. It's nice to be able to slow down some of the sections, or freeze a frame to get a better look, or just repeat your fave sections over & over again. The voice-over commentary by Peralta on the bonus track adds many anecdotes that had to be left out of the film, as well as giving credit to many of the people who contributed footage the documentary relies heavily on. There's also an additional, uncut film of today's Tony A during a pool session, which is nice to see.
The only reason this film doesn't get 5 stars is because of some of the people it left out. Where's Tom Inouye, of the notorious Inouye's Pool Service? When it came to outlaw pool-finding, Tom was the man! Laura Thornhill was probably the only other hard-core girl who got attention at the time; she's completely unmentioned. Although Stacy Peralta gets his props for modesty, he sometimes errs on the side of being TOO modest; there was a spectacular Arizona Pipe session I recall that goes unmentioned, one that Stacy made history at. It would have been nice to see some of that footage too.
All in all, Dogtown & Z-Boys can't be beat if you remember those days. If you're at the age where all this is new to you, it's a great way to learn where all those moves you're busting came from.
Now to dig out some OP's & Vans, & I'll be stylin' again...

Crystal Voyager (1975) Review

Crystal Voyager (1975)
Average Reviews:

I was living in Oxford, England when this movie came out and saw it because the Floyd did the music - I had no idea what to expect... It was a movie that changed my life - since then I have traveled all over the world, been places that I never even knew existed, and done many wonderful things - my life changed the instant that I saw this movie... not because it's a "great" movie, it isn't - but because it showed a different world to the one that I knew as a callow youth - if there is one message in this movie, it is that it's not what you DO in this live that creates happiness, it's how you live your life within the framework of this wonderful world.
Don't expect a plot or a story in the movie - a life well lived has neither - you don't need a different consciousness to watch the movie... all you need is a willingness to accept that when you walk with beauty and an open heart then something wonderful will walk beside you. God, I love DVDs!

The Endless Summer Collection (1966) Review

The Endless Summer Collection (1966)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These films are like the 80's movies that made everything that mattered happen. Ferris, Goonies, Breakfast Club, etc . . . except they are surfing classics, epic documentaries if you will.
**Bruce Brown has the classic surfer aesthetic, and narrates each film poignantly and humorously.
Endless Summer 1 is the classic older film, paced a little more slowly and fun-lovingly. It sets a great preface to Endless 2, an incredible multi-hemisphere journey.
Both films have excellent cinematography as well as dialogue and interplay between characters. Endless 2 is as goofily trivial as it is deep, as beautiful as it is mundane. . .
There are gorgeous scenery shots that do Cape Town, Indonesia, Figi, (my fav) and Alaska, justice as incredible places not only to surf, but also to just be.
Our two fascinating and yin and yang protagonists, 1, a Pat O'Connell gives suffusively satisfying short board licks, and 2, a. wing-nut supplies all of the long board smoothness to coalesce.
Five stars, in my to 25 of all time. A truly beautiful film made by those who love life.

One California Day (2007) Review

One California Day (2007)

I grew up surfing California and there are a number of things about the state that I miss. This movie captures the key elements of why I love the CA coastal lifestyle. Nostalgic without being sappy, looking back at the past while at the same time embracing the challenges beach-goers face today. Awesome. The movie is broken up by region (which fits with how I think of the state anyway,) with personality segments from each region. Skip Frye, Joel Tudor, Curren(Tom, Joe) the Ubiquitous Malloy brothers segment etc...
Although I surf and love the film, it seems like the movie was put together for surfers & non-surfers alike. If you liked Single Fin Yellow, Siestas & Olas or even Endless Summer, you'll love this flick.
Good job guys...

I bought this for my wife to give to my kids to give on Christmas. There's a lot of great surf footage and some very funny vintage Southern California surf culture in these DVD's. If you learned how to surf pre-leash then you'll get it otherwise it might go right over the heads of the gen x'ers.

Siestas & Olas - A Surfing Journey Through Mexico Review

Siestas and Olas - A Surfing Journey Through Mexico
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Following the documentary formula crafted in 1964 in "Endless Summer", this film takes 2 surfers and a second-hand Chevy Suburban down to Mexico for a surfing safari to discover the best surfing spots the country has to offer. Along the way, they make new friends and hook up with old friends and generally just drive, surf, eat, surf, sleep, and then surf some more.
Watching this movie is like watching someone's Summer vacation film, but with better camera work, better scenery, more action, better jokes, and this time the vacation is actually entertaining and fun to watch. And the Mexican tunes used for the soundtrack really makes you feel like you're there, sitting on the beach listening to someone strum a guitar as the boys surf the shorebreak. Surf fans will enjoy the action shots; everybody else will enjoy the story.
No nudity (well, except when the boys lose a bet and must wear a T-back bikini on the beach), no profanity, no blood (except for when one of the guys finds a rock in the surf with his head), and no harsh language. Nothing offensive (unless you're offended by the site of a 8' longboard split in two by the force of a wave). A good film for everyone to enjoy.

Five Summer Stories (1972) Review

Five Summer Stories (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've heard so much about Jim Freeman and Greg MacGillivray's (the founder of IMAX) film "Five Summer Stories" (and "Sunshine Sea ") many times from fellow surfers and before it was released in DVD, I'll admit seeing the VHS at various surf shop for years but I always found myself using the money towards surf wax or new boardshorts because what people were selling were these expensive limited edition signed sets and so I passed.
Flash forward many years later and it's been gnawing in the back of my mind that I still haven't seen the film yet and so, I drove to my local surf shop and picked up "Five Summer Stories" on DVD.
I've heard about how this film was one of the first major budget films as it was the first film on stereo, it was the first film that paid a surfer (Gerry Lopez) for appearing in the film and how this film literally packed theaters who just loved the surfing, seeing popular surfers from the '70s and also from the past just showing off their passion and also music by the Beach Boys and Honk.
Having watched the DVD again for I don't know how many times since I bought it, I figured that I might as well type up a review on my thoughts of the film.
The film is titled "Five Summer Stories" and features various stories somewhat broken down in five categories. The first story titled " A Hawaiian Odyssey" featuring Hawaii in 1972 and various surfers in Hawaii at various locations such as the North Shore, Sunset, Waikiki. From shots of the various activities in the 1970's, from people in Hawaii at events, to ladies in bikinis and even a young Laird Hamilton at the age of 10.
Chapter 1 3/8 would feature the surfing scene in the 1950's and 1960's with the popularity of surf films, surf shops, knee boarding, Duke and the big surfers at that time. Micky Dora, Nat Young, Midget Farrelly, Corky Carroll, David Nuuhiwa and more.
Chapter 2 titled "Different Drummers" features major surfers commenting on up and coming surfers of the early 70s. Also, an interesting segment with Corky Carrol with a mic taped to his body while surfing.
Chapter 2 1/2 is titled "Magic Rolling Board" and this featured the popularity of skateboarding during the '70s. This was pretty fun to see the various stunts that people would pull off and the crazy fandom at that time.
Chapter 2 3/4 is titled "Contest Weight". This would focus on various surfing competitions in the '70s.
Chapter 3 titled "Women in Motion" features popular women surfing from 1958 through the early 1970s. It was great to see women such as Lynne Boyer, Linda Benson, Joyce Hoffman and others who revolutionized surfing.
Chapter 3 1/4 features Shaun Tomson and 3 1/2 is titled "Bright Stars" and features two surfers.
Chapter 4 features a combination of surfing and old school animation. Chapter 4 3/4 titled "Is Surfing Closed Out" and this one features popular surf breaks and its changes from the 60's to 1995 (new footage).
Chapter 5 is titled "Heaven's Gift to Man: Tunnel of Love" which features a combination of surfing and animation. Focusing on surfers riding the tube.
VIDEO:
Considering the film was released in 1972, many scenes looked pretty well done and the video looks like it held up quite well through the years. The problem is that I don't know how much was added in newer footage versus what was shown in the 1970's. But all in all, the older footage looks pretty good on DVD.
AUDIO:
A lot of music and narration. A lot of people who grew up in the 70's have always talked about the awesome soundtrack and people who have seen the original film have said the film version of the DVD has its music replaced (half of the Beach Boys music replaced). So, again...not having seen the original '70s film, I don't know how much music was changed from the original to this present DVD version.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
There are no special features but there is a 1:29 minute prologue asking people "What were you doing in 1972?". Prologue was misspelled as prologe but very minor quirp.
JUDGMENT CALL:
Personally, I can see why this movie is a classic and I definitely agree it is a time capsule for surfing past. There are so many cutscenes, surfing and a bit of humor and fun included in this film and for a film created in 1972, I can tell you that the footage looks much better than a lot of surfing DVD's and VHS I own from the 80s and 90s.
For me, I enjoy watching legends like Gerry Lopez and even seeing Corky Carroll just ripping and just having fun on the waves. There are so many legendary surfers on this film and of course, many of them were in their teens or twenties at the time, so it was cool to see them surf.
I actually enjoy humorous cut scenes and footage that may not seem as much to others but yeah, sing Bill Hamilton and little Laird surfing at the age of 10 and 11 was pretty cool because that little kid has grown up to become one of the best big wave surfers of all time.
I've read some reviews about how the DVD version of the film does not have the original music as the original film and it truly was a bummer to them. I have not seen the original film with the original Beach Boys soundtrack, so I am not affected. But I supposed I can understand in someways when I watch a DVD for a television show and the music was changed because they don't have the music rights for the DVD releases and yeah, if you don't like the music which replaced the original, yeah, I can see that really dampening the experience for some.
Also, I noticed that the original film clocks in at 94 minutes, while this DVD version clocks in at 89:38. So, five minutes maybe were cut? Not sure. I do know that near the end, we see 1995 footage, so not sure if the film was re-edited to celebrate its 25th Anniversary or what.
But all in all, this film is one of the few surfing DVD's that I can say is worth owning.
I enjoyed watching the classic 70s footage and the fact that the film tried to introduced so many parts to it, all in all, it was fun. Was it better than "Endless Summer", I'm more biased towards "Endless Summer" but overall, "Five Summer Stories" was just fun to watch and having it in my collection definitely has me stoked!

I forget where exactly I heard about this movie, but I bought it a while back from their website. It is one of the funniest, weirdest, and most enjoyable surf movies I have seen. The surfing itself is nothing too exciting aside from some slow rolling longboard waves (with maybe like three shortboard waves thrown in there), but the plot and acting is awesome. If you buy this and you surf or have an odd sense of humor, you will not be disappointed.

Sprout - An Exploration Into the Riding of Water Mountains and Mole Hills - a movie by Thomas Campbell

This is a great movie - the footage is beautiful and the soundtrack is wonderful and non-traditional. It has the feel of an early 70s surf flick, something like Cosmic Children. There are longboards and shortboards and the surfing is just incredible. The fun that these guys have in the waves is palpable and their respect for the sport comes through as well. I particularly like the segment featuring Dave Rastovich, who is this generation's true soul surfer. It was a wise move to use his voice for the commentary in this part of the movie.
The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because I found the conquistador segment completely out of context with the rest of the movie. It didn't work regardless of one's political stance, it just didn't work in my opinion. Stick to surfing please.
So buy it. Keep these guys making movies. These are so much better than the average surf movie.

110% Surfing Techniques Volume 1 Review

110% Surfing Techniques Volume 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been surfing now for only a couple of months. Although I'm able to stand up on the board on white water (the wash that is created after a wave has broken, good practice for beginners) and getting the hang of things, so many questions have been left partially unanswered. Everyone I've met has shared great tips but early on I knew that I needed a comprehensive resource for the fundamentals AND BEYOND. Been looking for a vid that works from the ground up and shows exactly what to do when. Something that goes beyond a one hour surf instruction session, a video that gives you all of the basics but then offers you more advanced techniques for later on.
110% Surfing has definitely satisfied my quest for a comprehensive surfing how-to resource. SO much great info right away and it gives me so much to look forward to down the road as I get better. This disc goes the extra mile and I'm so stoked to review it...
The narrator/surfers show you how to do pop ups (get up on the board) AND give you multiple variations, something like five different ways to get up on the board if you're having trouble another way. They also show you does and don'ts with actual footage of people doing the right and wrong ways. Trimming your board, turns, even identifying waves, different types of breaks, rip currents, you name it. You SEE what a rip current looks like, with actual surfers using it to get out to the lineup (spot where surfers wait for waves), etc. It's SO useful to see these things visually. People popping up too early, too late, right on time, giving you the feel for what is appropriate in a way that only a visual experience can. That's what really does it for me, not only describing a proper or improper technique, but demonstrating each and their subsequent outcome. I spent way too many hours on my first couple of days out trying to figure out the cause for a symptom I was experiencing. Here you see the symptoms and the causes, pretty much teaching you how to spot what's right or wrong with a wave, a surfer (yourself or someone else) on sight. This video has immediately cleared up at least half a dozen flaws in my fundamentals, not to mention hipped me to some essential verbage for communicating a concept (pearling, on/offshore winds, swells, rights, lefts, duck diving, etc.). Can't hurt to use the right terms!
Once you're more than a beginner, the video takes you to some really cool pro tricks and does some really high quality slow motion breakdowns of them. Not sure if I'll get to that point anytime soon enough, but looks like a great segment if you're looking to learn roundhouse kickbacks, all of that jazz. They'll show a surfer doing a trick at what looks to be 1/50th speed or so, creeeeping along, using pro sport-style superimposed circles and lines and so on to highlight important aspects of the movement. Fun to watch, and really informative.
Great vid, definitely recommended from one 'seasoned beginner' to another!
