The Endless Summer Collection (1966) Review

The Endless Summer Collection (1966)
Average Reviews:

These films are like the 80's movies that made everything that mattered happen. Ferris, Goonies, Breakfast Club, etc . . . except they are surfing classics, epic documentaries if you will.
**Bruce Brown has the classic surfer aesthetic, and narrates each film poignantly and humorously.
Endless Summer 1 is the classic older film, paced a little more slowly and fun-lovingly. It sets a great preface to Endless 2, an incredible multi-hemisphere journey.
Both films have excellent cinematography as well as dialogue and interplay between characters. Endless 2 is as goofily trivial as it is deep, as beautiful as it is mundane. . .
There are gorgeous scenery shots that do Cape Town, Indonesia, Figi, (my fav) and Alaska, justice as incredible places not only to surf, but also to just be.
Our two fascinating and yin and yang protagonists, 1, a Pat O'Connell gives suffusively satisfying short board licks, and 2, a. wing-nut supplies all of the long board smoothness to coalesce.
Five stars, in my to 25 of all time. A truly beautiful film made by those who love life.

Siestas & Olas - A Surfing Journey Through Mexico Review

Siestas and Olas - A Surfing Journey Through Mexico
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Following the documentary formula crafted in 1964 in "Endless Summer", this film takes 2 surfers and a second-hand Chevy Suburban down to Mexico for a surfing safari to discover the best surfing spots the country has to offer. Along the way, they make new friends and hook up with old friends and generally just drive, surf, eat, surf, sleep, and then surf some more.
Watching this movie is like watching someone's Summer vacation film, but with better camera work, better scenery, more action, better jokes, and this time the vacation is actually entertaining and fun to watch. And the Mexican tunes used for the soundtrack really makes you feel like you're there, sitting on the beach listening to someone strum a guitar as the boys surf the shorebreak. Surf fans will enjoy the action shots; everybody else will enjoy the story.
No nudity (well, except when the boys lose a bet and must wear a T-back bikini on the beach), no profanity, no blood (except for when one of the guys finds a rock in the surf with his head), and no harsh language. Nothing offensive (unless you're offended by the site of a 8' longboard split in two by the force of a wave). A good film for everyone to enjoy.

Sprout - An Exploration Into the Riding of Water Mountains and Mole Hills - a movie by Thomas Campbell Review

Sprout - An Exploration Into the Riding of Water Mountains and Mole Hills - a movie by Thomas Campbell

This is a great movie - the footage is beautiful and the soundtrack is wonderful and non-traditional. It has the feel of an early 70s surf flick, something like Cosmic Children. There are longboards and shortboards and the surfing is just incredible. The fun that these guys have in the waves is palpable and their respect for the sport comes through as well. I particularly like the segment featuring Dave Rastovich, who is this generation's true soul surfer. It was a wise move to use his voice for the commentary in this part of the movie.
The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because I found the conquistador segment completely out of context with the rest of the movie. It didn't work regardless of one's political stance, it just didn't work in my opinion. Stick to surfing please.
So buy it. Keep these guys making movies. These are so much better than the average surf movie.

The Collection Review

The video is basically just a section of Dane followed by Clay. Since they are two of my favorites to watch on video, its a cool contrast to the cleaner surfing Dane does versus Marzos lip whipping snaps (fun to watch).
This is a shorter video, maybe 30 minutes or so but every clip is quality. Soundtrack is decent but not all that inspiring, for me, definitely dropped it down from a 5 star rating. They mention other surfers but its hardly even worth mentioning guys that just have one or two waves in the video. Overall, its been a nice addition to my video library and its definitely one that gets consistent play.

Surfboard Shaping and Design for Beginners is informative for someone who knows very little in regards to surfboard shaping and design. The video was somewhat lacking in the surfboard design area. I was also disappointed with not being able to print out the surfboard templates. In order to print out a surfboard template you need Adobe Illustrator!

The Ultimate Summer Bruce Brown Surf Collection Review

The Ultimate Summer Bruce Brown Surf Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A friend and I were lucky enough to preview this new complete set of Bruce Brown's surf films and it's totally EPIC! The Endless Summer I and II, plus 6 of Bruce's easily as excellent earliest surfing films 'Slippery When Wet,' 'Surf Crazy,' 'Barefoot Adventure,' 'Surfing Hollow Days,' and 'Waterlogged,' a compilation film. Bruce's film making style is a real joy to experience, and of course he is one of the catalysts that brought the real surfing lifestyle to the world. In addition to Robert August, Mike Hynson, Pat O'Connell, and Robert `Wingnut' Weaver you will enjoy such surfing luminaries such as Kemp Aaberg, Del Cannon, Mike Diffenderfer, and Henry Ford; if you haven't seen these films hop to it mate, and even if you have you will be entertained and super stoked, if these films don't make you want to surf or at least get to the beach or the Tiki lounge nothing ever will! The artwork is pretty cool too...

101 Stand Up Paddle Surfing How-To Hawaiian Style Review

101 Stand Up Paddle Surfing How-To Hawaiian Style
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A pretty good DVD giving the viewer the basics so they won't look like a complete fool when hitting the water for the first time. Some things I would disagree with, but more because of style rather than their information being "wrong". There is a fair amount of paddling footage spliced in, so if you condensed it down to just the instructional material, it would probably be about 30 min.
Still, it is probably the best SUP instructional DVD out right now.
There is also some good footage from the 2007 Steinlager SUP competition as a bonus!
And, as an aside, BE CAREFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU!!! I've seen a number of accidents out here--both SUP vs. swimmer and SUP vs. surfer. Not because the SUPer was being malicious or mean, they just didn't know any better and couldn't control the huge board. If that keeps up, SUPs are going to be banned from most areas.
