Stranded (with Les Stroud) Review

If you like Les Stroud's Survivorman Series then you will enjoy this DVD. There are two 45 minute episodes of the Boreal Forest, one in summer and one in winter. He only took two cameras with him and the production values aren't as slick. The camera shakes a bit too much at times. The format of these shows are very similar to the Survivorman series. He wasn't as skilled or experienced in these episodes. It takes him 10+ hours to make a fire! Survivorman fans don't hesitate to buy. I got mine via Les Stroud's website.

Sprout - An Exploration Into the Riding of Water Mountains and Mole Hills - a movie by Thomas Campbell Review

This is a great movie - the footage is beautiful and the soundtrack is wonderful and non-traditional. It has the feel of an early 70s surf flick, something like Cosmic Children. There are longboards and shortboards and the surfing is just incredible. The fun that these guys have in the waves is palpable and their respect for the sport comes through as well. I particularly like the segment featuring Dave Rastovich, who is this generation's true soul surfer. It was a wise move to use his voice for the commentary in this part of the movie.
The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because I found the conquistador segment completely out of context with the rest of the movie. It didn't work regardless of one's political stance, it just didn't work in my opinion. Stick to surfing please.
So buy it. Keep these guys making movies. These are so much better than the average surf movie.

180 Degrees South - Deluxe Limited Edition DVD (2010) Review

180 Degrees South - Deluxe Limited Edition DVD (2010)

The core conversation for me - the symbolism of walking towards the edge of a cliff. Rather than 'turning back' it's all about making a 180 degree turn and then 'stepping forward'. And this is only one of many jewels of wisdom and cinematography in a wonderfully honest and understated journey of a man who understands that nothing replaces the experience of going to beautiful and wild places. It grounds you and makes you really love a place - and then you feel the need to protect it. I had no idea what I would see when I randomly stumbled over this film, but I watched it twice that very evening only to watch it again.
