I was introduced to the benefits of Qigong by a good friend a few months ago. I noticed that it had immediate physical benefits. I had been searching for a practice that would help increase my physical energy.
This is a wonderful introduction to Qigong for beginners. I bought the video on the recommendations of the reviewers here and have not been disappointed. Plus it is a very reasonable cost compared to the other options.
Dr. Yang gives very clear and concise explanations of the theory behind the poses. The exercises are simple to do. I have started with the sitting exercises and am doing them morning and night the past few days.
I suffer from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia and bought this to improve the energy flow in my body. I have been feeling very weak lately due to lack of sleep and stress and found that the poses gave me immediate benefit by taking a layer of pain off my body. I am sleeping better too. I will check back in 3 months to update the benefits.
Also it became clear to me from watching the DVD that the problems I am having are energy problems. After doing the exercises I could feel the chi flowing in parts of my body that have been blocked -- namely my feet and arms. I also noticed that my kidneys are extremely sore and probably depleted. I was shocked. These exercises made me more aware of what is really going on in my body.
The sitting exercises are great for those who need to take it slow. To the senior gentleman who was upset that Dr. Yang didn't go into modifications. Yes, you are right, but you needn't worry if you can't stretch all the way to your toes. Just stretch as far forward as you can comfortably do. He also says in his analysis that the repetitions are guidelines -- and to do what you can.
A great DVD. I can't wait to see how I'm feeling in a few months. The DVD made me realize that I need to renergize my kidney's and I am buying herbal tea and herbs to assist in that process. I for one am tired of exercise that pushes the body past it's limits. This set of poses works with the body that you have now!

Shaolin White Crane: Hard and Soft Qigong Review

Shaolin White Crane: Hard and Soft Qigong

I myself have training in the arts of Tae Kwan Do and Karate. After I dedicated a few years to each school, I decided I enjoyed Chinese martial arts more so than Korean style. Every sect of martial art is unique and wonderful; however, I found the most enjoyment in Chinese. This in turn led a search to find a proper, traditional kung fu school. Well, such thing does not exist in Colorado, however, Dr. Yang's DVDs do!
Do not get me wrong, as White Crane techniques have been adapted into nearly every martial art, this DVD is priceless regardless of style (or lack there of.) This DVD is much more strenuous than some may believe too. Even in Soft Qigong, it is easy to break a sweat (if done properly.)
Dr. Yang's "Shaolin White Crane" book compliments this video. While the book is not required, it is highly recommended. It goes over the spiritual aspects, history, and breathing, while the video does not. In my opinion, the book may be more important than the physical training itself.
If you want to build a properly strong foundation for TRUE Shaolin Gong Fu (Kung Fu) studies as I am doing, this DVD is second to none. For you see, Dr. Yang is a White Crane (among other arts) student of two TRUE Shaolin masters (you will have to buy the book to see whom.)
This is a DVD I will be using ten - twenty - thirty years down the road with my White Crane studies. At YMAA.COM (Yang's Martial Arts Association) site, there are near countless other videos, books, compact discs, art, uniforms, etc. Included in these are White Crane Basic training 1 & 2 (2 tapes, or one DVD.) Moreover, Basic training 3 & 4 are due out in a month or two. Currently there are Kung Fu Fundamentals, Ti Chi, Chi Na, and much more, take time to visit www.ymaa.com, you will not be disappointed.
In addition, there is NO affiliation with YMAA and myself. I simply have much passion and respect for such true quality video training, A RARITY now a day.
I digress though; this DVD is broken down into Soft, Hard, and extras (ymaa video clips for others videos.) Within Soft and Hard are subdirectories that allow simple navigation to any point of study. I find the best feature is how there is nearly no talking, just soft Chinese music that escorts the current movement or exercise. Actual training is VERY easy to understand and follow, but to replicate the flowing movements of Dr. Yang, well that is up to hard work and time.
Yet that is what martial training is:
time, dedication, development, and enlightenment.
Peaceful Years.
Ivory Crane.

Five Animal Sports Qigong (YMAA chi kung) DVD Review

Five Animal Sports Qigong (YMAA chi kung) DVD

I've been waiting literally for years for this disc to come out! I was very pleased with the outcome of all of Dr. Yang's efforts. The disc is well produced, with almost too much information, if that's even possible!? This is what has been missing from all other videos in the world teaching this very ancient form of Qi Gong...... proper instruction! Dr. Yang imparts quite a lot of detailed information on relaxation, mood, beathing, and even a large section taught by one of his students on the relationship of the 5 Animals to the 5 Elements in Chinese medical theory and which organs they affect. The 5 sounds for the 5 organs are introduced as well. It's absolutely a wonderful disc if for only the information alone! The disc is well over two hours long, so the instruction is more than enough.
However, on the down side, this particular version of Hua Tuo's exercise is not for the absolute beginner. It is one of the most physical versions of this Qi Gong. Without some background in some form of martial art, or at least Tai Ji Quan, I think it might be difficult for a beginner to grasp the physical movements without a lot of effort. This style is very martial in character.
The other major drawback with this version of the 5 Animal Play is that it does require a fair amount of space in order to perform it. So plan on doing one repetition of each move each way in your small kitchen or living room. Luckily this disc came out in the spring so that you can learn the whole form outside, then alter it for the winter months to make it more do-able indoors if you have a small living space like I do.
To sum things up, I couldn't recommend this disc enough! Dr. Yang's teaching style is very warm and personal. After just one viewing you will know so much about Qi Gong and Chinese medicine that you'll be the center of attention at your next party! Just be sure to dress as your favorite animal....the monkey maybe?
