I don't like motorcycles but I do like this movie! Bruce Brown's ability to wrap a viewer up in a blanket of entertainment is uncanny. He approaches this documentary about motorcycle racing and recreation with a zeal and thoroughness that leaves you wanting more by the film's end. Featuring Steve McQueen, Malcolm Smith and Mert Lawwill - coupled with a snappy and involving music score by Dominic Frontiere (The Outer Limits series), On Any Sunday is sure to please.

Winning (1969) Review

Winning (1969)
Average Reviews:

Now and then, it can be a real pleasure to dip into the years and pull up an older movie for a night of "couch tatering." Not that this is such an "old" movie... but old enough that the differences between today's special effect dazzle and flash and 1969 are evident in pacing, dialogue, general style. Today's movies sometimes are lost in technical fireworks. This movie pleases with its simple quality of good actors who interact well with each other and stand on their own acting strength without too many fireworks.
And still, the director, James Goldstone, deserves kudos for his creativity and innovativeness throughout the movie. The opening scenes are original for 1969, beginning with a close-up of a buttery yellow dandelion, moving through clips of families and racing fans gathering together. Of note are clips at the Indianapolis race track - a scene of a misty morning at the track the day of the Indy 500, scenes of fans entering the park, race car drivers and mechanics in tense preparations, increasing adrenalin, burgeoning crowds. I have yet to attend the Indy 500, but seeing these scenes certainly made me hope that soon enough I might.
My fellow "couch taterer" and I had interesting conversations offering the male/female viewpoint on the scene of infidelity that centers the plot - the reasons behind the betrayal, if not excuses, the ramifications to all involved, including the son played by Richard Thomas, the responsibilities befalling all, the likelihood of a reuniting at movie's end.
In short, when a movie catches your imagination, makes you want to visit the place and event portrayed, and gives food for thought and discussion at its end, then this is a movie worth adding to a collection, whether one is a race fan or not.

Formula One Review 2004 Review

Formula One Review 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others have mentioned, this review of the 2004 Formula One season provides more in-depth coverage than its 2003 predecessor. The 2003 review runs 145 minutes whereas this version is 194 minutes long, allowing time for fairly comprehensive coverage of each race, reviews some of the controversies (Jenson Button's attempt to jump ship from BAR to Williams) and looks at the new venues at Bahrain and Shanghai. The crystal clear footage provided by DVD surpasses even that of the original broadcast footage I saw on cable TV. There is more in-car footage than has been included in past DVD's, including Jenson Button's complete qualifying lap to take pole position at Imola. That footage is terrific-- in fact my major and continuing criticism of these year end reviews is that more of this dramatic in car footage should be included. Nothing conveys the speed, handling, and yes, car to car racing that takes place in F1 better than seeing it from the driver's perspective. My wish is to someday have in-car footage of either the complete pole winning lap or a complete race lap from each circuit included. Still, the coverage is in depth and well done.
A smaller quibble is that, in such a tightly-controlled sphere of influence as Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One fiefdom, any official review will present the sport only in its best light and offer, at best, muted criticism of of its subject. This is most apparent in coverage of the US Grand Prix where there is no mention at all that the controversial decision to repeatedly parade cars through shards of carbon fiber behind the safety car, rather than sufficiently clean the track of post-accident debris, likely led to the accidents of Fernando Alonso and Ralf Schumacher. Likewise, the scandalously slow response of medical crews to Ralf's serious accident is not mentioned at all. Instead, all that we are offered is the rosy commentary "Ralf receives the undivided attention of the medical team!"
This review is comprehensive, with excellent video and sound from each race as well as a good amount (but not enough) of in car footage. I recommend this to any F1 fan.
CORRECTION: It turns out my review is mistaken on a major point! What I thought at first was simply a chapter listing turns out to be an additional feature that does not appear when simply playing this disc all the way through. When you go to the "Event by event" menu listing, not "Play All," the listing "Pole!" shows you the pole winning lap at each course! This is great-- just what I've wanted to see. I'm not sure why they didn't make this great feature more obvious. Or, maybe I'm just extremely slow. BUT, I take back my prior comments. It's great to see the in-car camera view of a complete lap of each course, driven in anger, with DVD clarity. Also, at the innaugural China GP, there is a race lap with Michael Schumacher that starts with him spinning out, then trying to rejoin, with graphics depicting braking, throttle, gear selection, and rpms. More in the future please!

For anyone with an interest in the history of NASCAR, this compilation is simply awesome. I can't understand why this dvd set hasn't gotten more attention, because it truly deserves it. If you're tired of the old clips that you see on every NASCAR video, you will be riveted to this one. Great footage of how NASCAR got started, and the people that started it, with great narration. Seen enough of the sponsor driven, politically correct drivers of today? This dvd highlights the colorful drivers & owners that made NASCAR great. Awesome tributes to Curtis Turner & the struggles of Wendell Scott. Great stuff!!!

This is an excellent video compilation which goes into the history and intricacies of the world of Formula 1. My only complaint is that it ends chronologically with the 1991 season. It would be nice if they make an updated or an addendum of videos that cover the seasons (cars, drivers, races, highlights, etc.) from 1992 up to the present.

GT Racer - Season 2 Review

GT Racer - Season 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
GT Racer, Season II just premiered on Discovery's 'HD Theater' channel in the US and on 'Discovery HD International' worldwide.
This is the four-disc box-set of that season.
It is awesome.
Just like Season I GT-Racer: The Series 6 x 1 hr Classics (DVD) it follows a number of race teams that drive all sorts of classic dream race-cars, like Ferraris, Cobras, Jaguars, Aston Martins, Mustangs, Morgans, Bizzarrinis and others in historic racing series at the major international tracks and events.
The beauty is the 'cinema verite' style that the individual documentaries where shot in. Even though they are contemporary (the races happened last year, 2008) the show has the feeling of '60s 'cinema verite' movies like 'Le Mans' Le Mans or 'A Man and a Woman' A Man and a Woman. It even reminds of John Frankenheimer's 'Grand Prix' Grand Prix (Two-Disc Special Edition). But the whole thing is off-set by very modern editing and modern music and modern remixes of older music. There is no annoying commentary that tells you things you don't want to hear anyway. Watching feels like you are stepping inside the pit-lane and/or slip next to the drivers to experience the racing as they do.
Its a totally new style of filmmaking that is almost the true "reality TV" as it is so genuinely real.
The characters (drivers, mechanics, race-teams etc) are wonderful. You experience their passion that is the common denominator in all installments of this series. The enthusiasm and excitement comes across the screen almost raw, just like you want it.
The races that are covered in Season II are:
1.) The Le Mans Classic, in France that only happens biannually. This is the number one international event for historic racing and just breathtakingly exiting as it goes through the night and the teams suffer major setbacks including engine failure, loss of oil, loss of breaks, cars don't start up at the famous "'Le Mans Start' where drivers have to run to their cars to take off.
2.) The 500 KM Marathon on the Nurburgring that includes the 22 KM stretch of the Nordschleife totaling the track to 25 KM (15.5 miles). This race goes through a major rain downpour, where cars slip off the track with it's 80+ turns left and right. A playboyish German count battles against - but at the same time with - a british pro-driver for the win. Very cool.
3.) Magny Cours, also in France, sees the classic racers drift on a modern formula-one track. Its so great to experience all the variations of these different events. This one features a super rare Morgan Le Mans Streamliner car. I think they say that only three where ever build.
4.) Is the legendary Carrera Panamerican where over the course of seven days 100+ classic race-cars cross entire Mexico (2,000 miles) on a street race (!!!) This is true adventure and people still doing it.
I think any car fan (and even people who thought that they where indifferent to cars) will enjoy these films. The cars are the most beautiful cars ever built, the people are cool and sometimes very funny, the tracks are glamorous and the way the whole thing is shot (with HD technology, progressive with a 16:9 movie-format)) and put together just absolutely top, top quality.
Until now the general public had just now idea that this is happening. This is 10 times cooler than modern F1 racing or nascar - in my book anyway. I certainly will go to such an event in the near future. These people seem like super fun and totally approachable, which modern racing just cannot deliver anymore.
And for the die-hard car-nut the DVDs have a great feature where you can toggle between sound tracks, using the audio button on you remote-control to switch the background music (which is great) on and off, so you can get the glorious 60's race engine noise full blast if you want to.
The GT Racer series should be in anybody's collection.

Historic racing is a worldwide, fast growing phenomenon where colorful characters live out their most sophisticated, car-crazed dreams. GT RACER takes the viewer literally inside the cars and onto the tracks. In Season II twelve idiosyncratic race teams give a peek at the most spectacular series of international classic racing, where the most beautiful classic racers ever built battle it out on the world's most glamorous racing circuits: Bizzarrinis, Ferraris, Jaguars, Morgans, Mustangs and Cobras race at the great circuits of Europe and America. The first episode, shot at the 2008 Le Mans Classic , takes a look at what it s like to race classic race cars day and night at the single most iconic tracks of all times - immortalized by none other than Steve McQueen himself: LE MANS. Its the most brutal endurance test for historic cars and crews. The second episode shot at the 500KM Marathon on the Germany s Nürburgring takes one onto the Nordschleife. This is the most complicated track in the world. In the hills, up and down, changing pavements all together 25km in length with some 80 plus turns. It s a race of 500 treacherous and dangerous kilometers. The third episode brings one to Magny Cours, France s grand prix circuit. Built for formula-one cars, this track makes an interesting playground for historic racers. The Masters Series Festival at Magny Cours is a showdown in sideways drifts with its three-hour endurance race as the main highliThe final installment follows the legendary Carrera Panamericana. This is the toughest classic race in the world, spanning seven days and 3,200km through Mexico. Special speed sections feature 550km of closed public roads for full speed racing. The roll-cages are thicker as one sometimes races along the edge of a 500 foot cliff.

Colin McRae, Rally Legend Review

Colin McRae, Rally Legend
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Colin McRae was by far the most exciting rally driver that ever lived, and his story is worth knowing. The feature includes great interviews with his father (Jimmy, also a rally driver), his wife (Alison), and his first WRC boss (David Richards). I would have liked to see more interviews with the likes of Nicky Grist (long time co-driver), Malcolm Wilson (team boss at Ford), and maybe some rally rivals such as Marcus Gronholm or Carlos Sainz, but that probably would have required a production beyond the scope of this product.
The video really shines in the amount of footage from Colin's career. WRC.com has a decent tribute to Colin in their Hall of Fame collection, and you can find plenty of crash footage or lame music videos on the internet, but if you really like rally, or if you know someone who does, this is what you need to get. You really get a sense of just how challenging rally is, and how skilled Colin was, when they show you a good chunk of onboard footage, without overbearing music and without attention-deficit cutting between shots.
Basically, the definition of rally racing should include McRae's name, or maybe just a link to some footage of his driving. He defined the sport, and any fan of rallying should own this dvd.

During 2007, a Duke production team was tasked with producing the definitive documentary about Colin McRae. With full access to all the WRC recordings of Colin's championship years, plus other rally and family archive, director Mark Cross was able to compile the most comprehensive career record yet of this remarkable sportsman. Working closely with McRae Motorsport Ltd, we also had rare and exclusive access to Colin during a hectic year in which he was about to launch his first production rally car, the amazing R4, was contracted to the X-raid BMW team for Dakar 2008, was involved in the launch of the latest version of his hugely successful computer game 'Colin Mcrae-Dirt' and was seriously considering a return to the WRC.The crew also joined Colin driving the R4 in public for the first time at Goodwood and thrilling the crowds in his unique Ford Escort Mk 2 at the Manx National Rally. Finally, in late August, only afew weeks before the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Colin, his son Johnny and two family friends, we were especially privileged to spend two days in Lanark with Colin and his family. Here Colin talked candidly about every aspect of his career and life, his favourite and not-so-favourite, drives, events, teams and his plans for the future. This is his story - the story of a true rally legend.

While it is not ROAM, it is definately a fun movie. Starts out slow. Let's face it, how many of us can really enjoy mountain biking in winter (except us lucky ones in Arizona... we just can't bike in the heat of the summer). The movies covers the life of competition as well as riding with friends. Love this movie.

We are pacing him on these, to get more gift bang-for-the-buck. He loves the first movie, and as you can imagine we've seen it bunches of times. For an adult, it's kinda thin on plot, but there is one. For a little boy that wants to see cars go fast, and likes a good-guy/bad-guy story, it's the bomb!

Storm Tactics - Cape Horn Tested Review

Storm Tactics - Cape Horn Tested
Average Reviews:

The Pardeys are awesome and inspirational, especially to small boat sailors. In this day of big, high tech yachts, they remind us that 15 years ago, a 30ft cutter was way more than anyone needed. And the Sea hasn't been the one changing.
This video was advertised on the Pardey website as having footage of their 29ft yacht rounding Cape Horn in extreme conditions, safely and competently, east to west. The DVD however, fails to show more than a few brief seconds of intermittent sea time and leaves the route and journey, in Lin & Larry's memories alone. It does show the deployment and theoretical use of a para-anchor along with a good review of hove-to principals. Both of which are done in what appears to be a windy lake or at the dock. Yep, much of the film is at a dock or inside their boat via monologue. Their yacht is beautifully shown shouldering through some swell, chop, and a fresh breeze, but as to rounding the Horn the wrong way against even 20ft seas and 60kt winds, that film has yet to be made.
I'll keep the video and my para-anchor, but $15 would have been much more appropriate from the authors of "The Cost Conscious Cruiser" for so little content.

The Pardeys have been called the "enablers" Their books and videos have encourage sailors of all ages to stop dreaming and start doing Now they take you well out to sea and demonstrate methods to help you bring your boat and crew safely through storms with your gear and dreams intact. Join them near South Africa's windswept Cape of Storms to watch a live demonstration of setting and retrieving a para-anchor, then sail on board Taleisin during Lin and Larry's voyages across the Atlantic, through the windswept waters off Cape Horn as they round contrary to the wind and use the storm management methods they share here. You will see their storm sails set and working in winds of 70 knots. The Pardey's use this visually explicit medium to demonstrate the technical details of storm tactics for both modern and classic boats, and they show how you can adapt their ideas for your own use.

The Life & Times of Secretariat, an American Racing Legend Review

The Life and Times of Secretariat, an American Racing Legend
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had bought the original videotape of ESPN's "Life and Times of Secretariat," and the original videotape of "Big Red's Last Race," about the 1973 Canadian International. It is nice to have both documentaries on the same disc.
But best of all, ALL of Secretariat's twenty-one starts are included on the disc. Almost all of them are shown in their entirety (only the very early races aren't totally complete). I am assuming all of the footage from these races came from owner Penny Chenery's private collection.
It was great to watch Big Red's races from his two-year-old season in 1972. I had never seen any of those races before. From the time Red won the Hopeful, turf writers from all over the country were hailing him as the second coming of Man O'War. He of course didn't disappoint. His five losses were interesting to see, and in the cases of the 1973 Whitney and Woodward, see again. It was clear he never should have lost a race.
I was extremely impressed with his first race on grass, the 1973 Man O'War. Jockey Ron Turcotte claimed Secretariat was better on the grass than he was on the dirt, and he had mentioned the horse seemed almost deer-like when he ran on the grass. In this race, Secretariat went up against the top grass horse in the United States, Tentam. Tentam did his best to try and catch Secretariat, who was on the lead most of the way in the race, but he couldn't do it.
Secretariat's best performance was arguably the inaugural Marlboro Invitational. In that race, initially intended as a match race between he and stablemate Riva Ridge, there were ultimately FIVE champions in that race, including Secretariat, Riva Ridge, Kennedy Road, Key to the Mint, and Cougar II. No single race since has had that many champions. Secretariat caught Riva Ridge at the top of the stretch and coasted home in world-record time, a record which stood for many years.
The DVD is expensive, but to see all of those races again it was worth the money.
