Field of Dreams (1989) Review

Hi...
this is a great movie..great transfer and great extra features...commentary, roundtable with hall of fame baseball players...bravo special ...current day update on the actual field of dreams location....BUT , and its a big one...it does NOT contain the fabulous hour long making of documentary from the initial release!!! as well as many of the other bonus features....
so.....if you are a fan , you will most likely want both editions...
I don't understand why they couldn't have included the bonus features from the first "collectors" edition to make this the definitive issue...but Like ON GOLDEN POND ...you get a newer edition with great extras which don't duplicate the original....
anyway...just thought I'd warn fans out there who are thinking of "trading up" for the new edition...

"A Hero for Daisy" is a dynamic story about a female Olympic athlete who had the courage, persistance, and deep convictions to pursue obtaining equal rights for women in sports. The film is inspiring and engaging. Mazzio's brilliant direction counterpoints principle with humor, preserving honesty and sensivity to all participants in this struggle. Share this film with your family and friends, especially youngsters who will learn a valuable lesson!

A Hero for Daisy chronicles two-time Olympian and Title IX pioneer, Chris Ernst. In 1976, Chris galvanized her rowing team at Yale University to storm the athletic director's office to protest substandard conditions for the women. Nineteen women stripped, exposing the phrase "Title IX" emblazoned in blue marker. The demonstration was covered by all of the major news outlets the following day, and the Yale phones started ringing. The women found themselves with new locker rooms two weeks later. The nation, by virtue of this action, became acquainted with Title IX.The film, hailed as a "landmark" film by The New York Times, "inspirational" by TVGuide, "fantastic" by Sports Illustrated, "remarkable" – NPR, aired nationwide on ESPN Classics, Oxygen, and WTSN-Canada. Invited to screen at the Smithsonian, A Hero for Daisy was awarded a Gracie as well as a Women's Sports Foundation Journalism Award, and is in thousands of classrooms across the nation. Most importantly, A Hero for Daisy continues to inspire and energize girls and women across North America, as well as their fathers and brothers. In short - the impact of the film has been dramatic - from a father of a very tall 9 year old who wrote to report that his daughter felt less bad about her appearance after seeing the film - to parents writing to say that the film jump-started dialogue with their teenage children - to 40 Connecticut College athletes who, after seeing the film, were inspired to take a stand with respect to inequity within their own athletic department - to a woman in her 50's who became inspired to challenge the glass-ceiling at her financial institution. This EDUCATIONAL version is for schools and institutions and comes with teaching materials appropriate for Grades 5-12 as well as college use.

If you appreciate good music and exceptional basketball athletes, you'll enjoy 80's highlight clips of such basketball greats as Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwan, Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, Larry Bird, Dr. J., Isaiah Thomas, and more! Each athlete has a theme song and a personalized video clip compiliation to go with it. In addition to that, there is a bonus of old-time basketball greats spliced in the middle, the video set to Billy Joel's "This is the Time to Remember" Just a great video for any serious basketball fans. I've seen it well over 30 times and I still love it!

"My son first began using your program at the end of his junior year in high school. The season that followed was just remarkable. The change in focus and concentration made a big difference in his approach. At the end...he had eight colleges to choose from to play at the next level. I can say that your program is the one key that made the difference. Thanks for such a great program. I would highly recommend this program to anybody interested in improving their game."

Pride and Passion: The 1984 NBA Playoffs and Finals (Boston Celtics vs. L.A. Lakers) (1984) Review

Pride and Passion: The 1984 NBA Playoffs and Finals (Boston Celtics vs. L.A. Lakers) (1984)
Average Reviews:

This video chronicles the 1984 season, which marked the beginning of the real boom for NBA basketball. 1984 was the first season where Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, college rivals from the past, met in the NBA Finals for the first time. It was also current NbA Commissioner, David Stern's first year at the helm, and marked the beginning of expanded playoff basketball. This event also marked the return of the historic Celtics-Lakers rivalry which had been absent for some fifteen years.
CBS video does a remarkable job chronicalling the season which marked many firsts, including the NBA All-star weekend. Fans should remember that it was there that the first NBA slam dunk contest took place. The video takes you in depth to the intensity of the 1984 playoffs, which included heroics from many of the game's future hall of famers including the Isiah Thomas - Bernard King duel in the first round of the playoffs. It also shows the Nets' improbable upset over the then defending champion Philadelphia Seventy-sixer team led by Dr. J.
What makes this video so enjoyable is that it includes both depth and entertainment into one of basketball's best years. Most NBA videos focus just on one player or one team, or include just highlights. This video gives notice to the whole league, without detracting from the video's main focus, the Lakers and the Celtics.
Dick Stockton does a superb job narrating the film, and its inclusion of music from the eighties makes it even more nostalgic. Any true fan will enjoy this video.

Karlton Hines Story Review

The onset of the "street" video craze is captured at its finest in this film. Karlton Hines represented the glamour and the terror that drug dealing, street basketball and the New York underground breed as represented in today's popular music and film. A strong Bronx native destine for fame on the court, who couldn't remove himself from the excitement that would eventually consume him, the Karlton Hines story is not one to miss. Strap yourself in for a reality ride through the ghetto with what could be characterized as "amazing and authentic accounts of a true life rise and fall drama".

Los Angeles Lakers: 2010 NBA Finals Series (Collector's Edition) (2010) Review

Los Angeles Lakers: 2010 NBA Finals Series (Collector's Edition) (2010)

- Ron Artest, champagne-drenched, in his Game 7 post-interview: "What's the question? I''ll be here all day. Well, not all day 'cause I do want to go to the club."
So can one get enough of them L. A. Lakers? With that emotional, very classy ring ceremony just this past October 26th, I thought every possible drop of fan joy had been wrung out of the 2009-2010 Lakers Championship Team. But then this hefty DVD set rolls around with its eight discs, the first seven of which offer up the entire Games 1-7 of the tension-wracked 2010 NBA Finals series between Boston and Los Angeles. Note that the bonus eighth disc compiles a busload of post-game press conferences, spanning Games 1-7 and, yes, this includes Ron Artest's classic wacky, exuberant Game 7 post-conference interview on the dais ("I got Wheaties!").
This has been one of the most intense, most hotly-contested NBA Finals in recent memory, and I am mulling over how hard core of a fan I am, whether I actually really want to sit thru those soul-killing games in which the Lakers lost (I don't know if I could put myself thru that again). Anyway, each DVD that features a game also comes with a mini-movie which provides an overview of that game, and the sights and sounds leading up to that game (including sound bites from players, coaches, and fans). You should know that each of these mini-movies consists of clips lifted straight from the L.A. Lakers' NBA Championship 2009-2010 DVD, minus the voice-over narrator. Each of the first seven discs also comes with team score breakdowns for each quarter and team stats (field goal %s, offensive/defensive rebounds, turnovers, blocks, fouls). Note that the Game 7 disc also has Doris Burke' immediate and surreal post-game interview with Ron Artest ("Well, first off, I want to thank everybody in my 'hood...") and the presentation of the Larry O'Brien and Finals MVP trophies. I know this DVD set is pricey as heck but, for you Lakers fans, this is about as must-have as it gets.
The bonus 8th disc gives you the following post-game press conferences:
- Game 1: Doc Rivers, Phil Jackson, Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant
- Game 2: Doc Rivers, Phil Jackson, Ray Allen
- Game 3: Phil Jackson, Doc Rivers, Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant
- Game 4: Doc Rivers, Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, Nate Robinson & Glen Davis
- Game 5: Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce, Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett
- Game 6: Phil Jackson, Doc Rivers, Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant
- Game 7: Doc Rivers, Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest

All-American Basketball: The Fundamentals of Post Play Review

All-American Basketball: The Fundamentals of Post Play
Average Reviews:

Be prepared for some stuttering on the dvd as it seems that the frame rate is off. However this is a decent dvd for beginners who are new to the game.
However for their sake I wish he would of gone into hand, hip and foot position before recieving the ball and how to fight for it down low especially if a defender is denying you or has a good X step. On that note defense is completley ignored. Search around there are better dvds out there.
Also be prepared...what he calls "drills" are really just post moves. The only true drill is at the start, the Miken drill which he just calls "a nice warm up drill".
There are some positives though. He has some great explanations of the moves at the high post and at the 13 foot.
This is the first review Ive written for Amazon but this is more just a devils advocate piece against the glowing reviews Ive seen on here.

1992 NCAA(r) Division I Men's Basketball 1st Round - Evansville vs. UTEP Review

1992 NCAA(r) Division I Men's Basketball 1st Round - Evansville vs. UTEP
Average Reviews:

I have to laugh when I recall the first round of the 1992 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, when the UTEP Miners played the Evansville Purple Aces featuring the mighty Parrish Casebier. Who the heck is that, you ask? My point exactly. The tournament analysts (and even the announcers who called this game) kept running their mouths about how Casebier was an NBA-caliber player, and what a great second-round matchup Evansville and Kansas was going to be, as if the Miners were already on a flight home.
The result? UTEP would defeat the fearsome Purple Aces, and would go on to upset the #1 seeded (and #2 ranked) Kansas Jayhawks in the second round. Fans of UTEP basketball simply must own this historic first round game (and I recommend all the UTEP games offered by NCAA On Demand as well).

While this DVD does have some B&W footage of Pistol Pete, it is limited. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised
when it clocks in at 65 min. A good deal of the disc is the author talking to another guy about Pete. The footage
they have obtained isn't the most flattering, though on occasion you do see glimpses of his star power. I hope
one day we can really have a decent video of the Pistol.

25 Strong: Film About Basketball (2006) Review

25 Strong: Film About Basketball (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It should really be sub titled....
"A Film About Basketball and Life".
What you have here is a group of Black men engaged in doing something that Black men aren't supposed to be interested in doing. That is caring enough about the future to spend their "free time" working with younger people, providing them with direction and fun at the same time.
This movie takes place in Brooklyn's financially impoverished, heart of gold Bed-Sty neighborhood. It's the story of how a summer basketball program has sustained itself and become a community institution, not only for the basketball players it has produced, but also for the type of young people who emerge from it.
An excellent movie especially for those who are cynical about today's younger people.
