I was living in Oxford, England when this movie came out and saw it because the Floyd did the music - I had no idea what to expect... It was a movie that changed my life - since then I have traveled all over the world, been places that I never even knew existed, and done many wonderful things - my life changed the instant that I saw this movie... not because it's a "great" movie, it isn't - but because it showed a different world to the one that I knew as a callow youth - if there is one message in this movie, it is that it's not what you DO in this live that creates happiness, it's how you live your life within the framework of this wonderful world.
Don't expect a plot or a story in the movie - a life well lived has neither - you don't need a different consciousness to watch the movie... all you need is a willingness to accept that when you walk with beauty and an open heart then something wonderful will walk beside you. God, I love DVDs!

My Life on Ice (2003) Review

My Life on Ice (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"My Life on Ice" (Ma vraie vie a Rouen) shows how a 16-year old French student and figure skater uses a gift digital camera to explore his world and his relationships, allowing him to make some decisions and forays.
Etienne (played by Jimmy Tavares) gets along very well with his widowed mother, Caroline (played by Ariane Ascaride) and his step-father's mother, Granma (played by Helene Surgere). When Granma wins a digital camera in a lottery, she passes it on to Etienne at the start of the movie.
Etienne figures the camera out immediately and takes pictures of what matters most to him - his mother and grandmother, his skating, his best friend, Ludovic (played by Lucas Bonnifait), his geography teacher, Laurent (played by Jonathan Zaccai), and his skating partner (played by Nicolas Pontois). The picture recording becomes obsessive. Etienne tries to keep the proceedings fun and natural but is able to take advantage of Ludovic's vanity to have him answer questions on the sex he has when dating girls. Eventually Etienne's movie stars ask him to leave them more of their privacy.
Early on Ludovic hears Etienne's proclamation that the coming school year is the Year of Love, when he will fall in love and have sex. Well, maybe he will have to compete first in the French ice skating championships (in which he comes in second). Later on Ludovic remembers and suggests that Etienne get a move on in courting the ladies.
Etienne does finagle an early meeting between his mother and the geography teacher, who hit it off and become a couple. Laurent makes an easy-going father-figure, but what does Etienne really think of that, especially since Laurent has been making observations of his own.
After Laurent has an accident, Etienne asks Ludovic a dangerous, leading question, triggering a logical next step and leading to a happy, unexpected conclusion.
Etienne is not a trained photographer; so the picture shown has technically poor editing, lighting, and composition from time to time. The quality picks up as Etienne improves and uses a remote control. The movie's makers do produce order from the quasi-amateur efforts; so it's all right.
While Etienne is a friendly, endearing fellow, he does not verbalize his inner self. He uses his camera to explore his interests and draws his own conclusions. Unlike what traditionally happens in this type of movie, there are no soliloquies, journals, class essays, or sobbing to sympathetic female classmates or family members. Etienne is following a normal coming-out process, but relying on an unusual prop. He does push his luck. The is curious and exploring. The audience has to work a little bit.
The ending was abrupt, elliptic, and happy. Maybe there could be a sequel?
While Etienne takes some skin shots of his skating partner, of Ludovic (thrice), and of Laurent, the main character goes the distance himself more than once, earning extra points for looks and bravery.
All the main actors are good. Jimmy Tavares and Nicolas Pontois do their own expert figure skating. The sets and Normandy locations (Rouen, Dieppe, the coast) are attractive. It was nice to have a cameo from Frederic Gorny of "Wild Reeds."
The extras include a very good commentary from the two directors (Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau, who also did "The Adventures of Felix"), a trailer, and previews of three other movies.

Pumping Iron II: The Women (1985) Review

Pumping Iron II: The Women (1985)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This short documentary explores the world of competitive female bodybuilding during the early 1980's. This film is true to the era with heavy makeup, spandex, bad hair and a moonwalk included during a posing routine. The film ponders the the level of acceptable muscularity that a woman should posess and examines the judging of a competitor who at the time was bigger than any other woman who ever stood on the competitive stage -- Australian power lifter Bev Francis. By current standards, Bev would fit right in and might actually be on the small side as compared to other female professional bodybuilders, but by 1983's standards, she was considered a freak. Neither the judges nor the competitors could come to a consensus about the ideal. The first Ms. Olympia Rachel McLish was more along the lines of what the public expected of female bodybuilders -- sleek, with some definition and feminine. McLish and the others look more like today's fitness competitors. Carla Dunlap had considerable size, but was still smaller than Francis who she said "Has muscularity that most men would envy."
Female bodybuilding is still a fringe activity, and this film shows some of what the pioneers endured in the early days. And much like today, the officials and trainers are mostly male.
I enjoyed this movie for its camp value, but it's also a nice history lesson for female physique competitors.

MotoGP 2004 Review Review

MotoGP 2004 Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The image quality seems OK (2002 was the best), the commentary is very good (Toby Moody and Julian Ryder), but there's very little racing!!!
In 2003, Rossi won his third championship on a Honda. At the end of the season, he announced a switch to Yamaha for 2004. Few were expecting him to win from the outset, and expectations for the first race were enormous ... and we get 4 minutes of race coverage! Not just for this race, but pretty much the rest of the season, we get less than 5 minutes per race.
On the 2001 DVD, each race was given 8 or 9 or even 13 minutes. The trend has grown worse each year, and the 2004 review hit a real low. It's pathetic that the VHS tapes from the 1990s contain almost twice as much racing as the DVDs of the 2000s.
MotoGP fans should boycott Duke until this craziness stops.

NWA/WCW Clash of the Champions 1 March 1988 I Review

NWA/WCW Clash of the Champions 1 March 1988 I
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While the WWF had a tradition of having television supercard specials on NBC called "Saturday Night's Main Event", NWA/WCW would also do the same thing on their station of TBS for years called "Clash Of The Champions." Now for those who don't already know the story, WWE would constantly have schedule conflicts for months with the NWA as WWE put their first ever Survivor Series PPV on the same day as the traditional NWA Starrcade show blackballing them off several cable companies along with scheduling the first ever Royal Rumble show on USA network the same day as their Bunkhouse Stampede PPV. The NWA responded by putting on their own special during the WrestleMania IV PPV in the first ever "Clash Of The Champions" event...the event that's more memorable than anything else for a match that saw the birth of a wrestle we now refer to as an ICON. Now I was able to see & tape this entire event when WWE 24/7 (now "Classics On Demand") showed this entire event as a 20th Anniversary special so I don't know what was edited (if anything was edited since it wasn't a 3 hour show) from the VHS tape since Turner Home Entertainment had a habit of editing their tapes down to two hours.
College Rules Match: NWA Television Champion Mike Rotunda vs. Jimmy Garvin - Before he became more famous as a tax collector named I.R.S. & after he was a patriot in the U.S. Express, Capt. Mike Rotunda was a member of the stable "Varsity Club" who were wrestlers that played off their amature wrestling background. This match was make just for that gimmick as this was under amature wrestling rules where there were rounds & a "1 count" pinfall instead. The stipulation here hurt the match more than helped as I just really didn't enjoy the match.
NWA United States Tag Team Champions Midnight Express vs. Fantastics - As I've said before, the Fantastics were the perfect replacements for the Rock N' Roll Express when they left the NWA during this short time as far as inring ability & chemistry with the Midnight Express. Both teams were young & quick and put on a great solid & entertaining match here with the Fantastics coming so close but made one mistake that cost them.
Barbed Wire Match: Dusty Rhodes & Road Warriors vs. Ivan Koloff & Powers Of Pain - This wasn't a "no ropes" barbed wire match that we're used to seeing in this day & age as they had one thin string of barbed wire wrapped up across all three ropes together so it looks very "tame" by today's standards but hardcore for that day & age. This was pretty short & sweet as the Warriors & Dusty (complete with his own Road Warrior facepaint) got dominated & got their revenge for the eye injury Animal suffered which forced him to wear a hockey mask in this match.
(Also available on "The American Dream: The Dusty Rhodes Story")
NWA Tag Team Champions Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard vs. Lex Luger & Barry Windham - The team also known as the "Twin Towers" dominated the first half of this match to the point where Luger he got the Torture Rack on Tully in the first minute & Barry had a sleeperhold so tight on Tully that he was able to keep it on when they both rolled out of the ring. The Horsemen later caught up & did what they did best in tag team wrestling by cutting the ring in half & making their quick tags having this match go back & forth between both teams with the crowd hot the entire time. James J. Dillion got involved in the end as this match didn't go long but it was non-stop action from start to finish.
(Also available on "Ric Flair & The Four Horsemen" & "Legends Of Wrestling: Heatseekers")
NWA Champion Ric Flair vs. Sting - This was the match that made Sting a household name overnight. James J. Dillion was suspended over the ring in the cage to prevent interference in what has gone down as a classic encounter that has stood the test of time today. They went to a time limit draw & had a split decision with judges (which defeats the purpose of the judges in the first place but whatever). When Flair said on the Horsemen DVD that "we made a career making guys...", this was the best example possible that fits that statement.
(Also available on "Nature Boy Ric Flair: The Definative Collection")
In the end, this was a classic event that any fan of wrestling (not sports entertainment) during this time will enjoy...however, you can get the 3 top matches on here on DVD while the teams of the Midnight Express & Fantastics had a better quality match that recently became available on DVD as well (WWE's "Allied Powers" set) so if you can find a cheaper copy of this tape then I recommend but otherwise, collect the matches on the other DVD sets.

Menikmati Review

Menikmati
Average Reviews:

Going into Menikmati the documentary feel in the beginning made me worry a bit. I've got absolutely nothing against a skating documentary but after seeing the names of the eS team members I could not wait to see their skate parts. Luckily, Menikmati doesn't disapoint. It has an overly formulaic structure of including a skater intro followed by a regular skate part and then a slow-mo section, but the skating is so amazing that it doesn't really take away from your enjoyment (although I will say that the regular motion shots included as a dvd extra were so much more entertaining than their slow-mo counterparts and I've watched that montage in regular motion again and again). Tom Penny sticks out as always. His skating and the intro to his part really caught my attention and it was great to see on the dvd extras a chance to look at penny skating from a young age and watching that progression as he developed his skating skills over the years. Highly, highly recommended!

1975 World Series - Cincinnati Reds vs Boston Red Sox Review

1975 World Series - Cincinnati Reds vs Boston Red Sox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Boston Red Sox won the best game in the history of the World Series but unfortunately that was in Game 6 and not Game 7 and the Cincinnati Reds ended up winning the first of two consecutive titles in 1975. Of course, now we know that because they sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees the Curse of the Bambino fates the Bosox to lose any World Series in which they play in seven games. The Big Red Machine had won 108 games during the regular season and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Championship series and then promptly ran into Luis Tiant who pitched a five hit shutout in Game 1. The question then became how often Boston could pitch Tiant, which ended up being not often enough. The Reds came up with a pair of runs in the ninth inning to pull out a 3-2 victory in Game 2 and the drama was on.
It goes without saying that everybody remembers Carlton Fisk's home run to win the epic Game 6, but there was other drama in this series involving the Boston catcher, namely the wild throw he made in Game 3 after getting tangled with Cincinnati pinch-hitter Ed Armbrister during an attempted sacrifice bunt that led to the winning run. Tiant pitched another complete game and Tony Perez hit a pair of home runs as the Red Sox and Reds split the next two games to send the series back to Boston.
Watching the highlights of Game 6 only confirms what we already know about how great of a game this was; but did you know that the only reason the television camera stayed on Fisk when he hit his ball down the left field foul line in the 12th inning and urged the ball to stay fair was that a giant rat inside the Green Monster kept the cameraman from following the flight of the ball? Instead we got to see Fisk's frantic gyrations and the "reaction shot" was born in the wonderful wide world of sports broadcasting.
Eventually, after a couple of days of rain cooled off everybody, they finally played Game 7, and the finale was a pretty good baseball game in its all right. The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead but the Reds came back to tie the game in the 7th inning and once again a game in the 1975 World Series was decided in the final inning. This explains why relief pitchers got credit for three of the Big Red Machine's four wins. What more could you ask for? (this question only applies to those who are not Boston Red Sox fans). Pete Rose led all batters with a .370 average and was named Series MVP. Of course, nobody remembers anything he did in the series, all because of that Fisk fellow.

This is a great video to have, every NHL fan should go out and order it. It features in-depth stories on the great goalies of today such as Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, and Joseph. It also talks a bit about Billy Smith, Jacques Plante, Bernie Parent, and other goalies of yesteryear. The one major problem with the video is that it was too short, only about fifty minutes, and dedicated a lot of time to the goalies' personal lives instead of saves.

I am a licensed massage therapist and I purchased Art Rigg's "Deep Tissue Massage" manual about a year ago and loved it, but really needed to see what was being explained in the book. I had very high hopes for the DVD's and was not disappointed, rather the opposite, they exceed my expectations. Mr. Rigg's is an enjoyable instructure to watch, as well as extremely skilled and knowledgeable. It is apparent his goal is to help massage therapists become well-informed and successful practitioners. Cultivating touch, anatomy review, biomechanics, and working with injuries - together with hours of excellent demonstrations of applied techniques, you can't go wrong with this set. These videos move at a very comfortable pace, each building upon the next. The DVD format is ideal for easy reference. I couldn't be happier with my purchase and highly recommend this set to recent graduates of massage therapy programs as well as long-time practicing massage therapists.

If you know a runner ask them about Dean Karnazes. Everyone has their opinion about him some see him as a role model some do not. I saw this movie before I ever heard anyone debate about Dean. Even if you are not a fan of Dean this is truly an amazing film. This movie follows Dean as he travels around the country to run 50 marathons in 50 days. Some marathons are recreated on the course they take place on at a later date and some are live. Dean invites runners to come out an join him. Heavy rain, injury (Dean takes a pretty bad spill) and even running into a pole do not stop these determined runners. The first few marathons get more screen time and some marathons are recapped due to time constraints. The experience at each marathon is different and Dean meets some truly inspirational runners at these races. This film is not only inspirational but thought provoking. A must see for any runner epically someone cosidering entering a full marathon or an ultra running event. Oliver Stone Collection (1991) Review

Oliver Stone Collection (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Clearly Oliver Stone is not your average film-maker. He is a man guided by passion, rebeliousness, and a burning sense of what is right and wrong. This 10-DVD set really strikes out and reveals the man for what he is, warts and all.
This set represents each of the films in the best condition available, which is both good and bad. The new Transfers of Nixon, Natural Born Killers and Heaven & Earth are stunning, and the extended cuts and bonus materials included with Doors, JFK, Nixon, and Any Given Sunday are more than any fan could possibly have asked for.
However there are flaws, fortunately most of them minor and probably exagerated by the contrast to what the set does actually achieve. Commentary tracks are lacking on Talk Radio and U-Turn, and not all the films are anamorphic widescreen. As noted those flaws are minor. A larger problem is Born of the Forth of July. While I wanted significantly more bonus material, something matching what is or will soon be available with the rest of the Viet Nam trilogy, the real problem is that the print is nearly unwatchable. In transfering this film they set the edge enhancement feature way too high. every scene is filled with images that have a white halo "Ringing" effect surounding the actors or the background. This is a side effect of a bad transfer and is present in many DVD's which have been "Cleaned" or "re-mastered" but I've never seen it this bad ever. It is so distracting here that one wonders if quality control ever checked this disc.
Given the attention to detail that went into several other of the Discs (See Heaven & Earth, Nixon, and Any Given Sunday) from the various studios involved, Universal really dropped the ball here. Director Stone, Ron Kovic, and this film all deserved substantially better than what Universal put in
But like I said, other than this glaring flaw the rest of the package is a real winner!!
